Teardown - Ericsson RMD973 switches!

Ғылым және технология

Always fun to look at quirky, vintage switches like this! This is the Ericsson RMD973, a rare and fairly unknown switch type found only in a few keyboards. Hope you enjoy the video! :)

oh my god you are so lazy. one google search of the key at 0:35 of RMD973. Wikipedia says that it belongs to the Ericsson 1121 keyboard. you're welcome.

Deskthority lists "Ericsson 1121", an XT terminal keyboard.

There were more layout variants than the XT. Full-size with F-keys on the left, and "battleship" with numpad that could be detached and mounted on the opposite side. Ericsson Data Systems was acquired by Nokia Data and it later by ICL. You can find the keyboards with all three brands.

An interesting thing with these switches is that a stabilised key had a switch, a dummy switch and a bar mounted between the two switches, interacting with the switches' sliders.. Not with separate mounts like most keyboards.

I have a keyboard from a typewriter with these switches. The feel is very hard to explain. Its smooth, but also heavier on the top than it is on the bottom. That leaf arm does a bit of tactility on the upstroke, and the key feel is just not excellent, comparing to MX swicthes. It is silent, and a bit sponge-y but not mushy at all.

Could it have been capacitively sensed and the "rubber" is for a combination of quietness and that you don't actually want to make a circuit?

Glancing iver the patent, that doesn't seem to be the case.

I own one Ericsson keyboard with these switches. Also one of the very few boards in my collection that I have not bothered to convert. Key feel is so bad that I cannot be bothered to put the effort into figuring out the matrix. It has DIN plug, but not compatible with Soarer's converter. The stabilisers are kind of epic though. Maybe one day...

it's not very good in a keyboard. There's a lot of rubbing/scratchyness by design as the slider is rather overcomplicated, i have a numpad made for ICL with these switches. Interesting design but it's not really too nice to use.

If you come to a keyboard meet up in the mid atlantic USA let me know, I've got a numpad full of these. They aren't particularly interesting feeling but I could wheel them out if you want. I should get off my ass and do a video on that thing.

I actually have an Ericsson keyboard! Unfortunately it's dead and some switches are actually bad (Bent/broken metal) but majority of them work fine from the looks of things

Does the additional tension from the contact spring in the top half of travel lead to a feel of slightly uneven weighting as you push the switch down and release back up? Or is the flat spring relatively very light so it has negligible impact?

It's basically impossible to make judgments like that based off of loose switches tbh.
