Even though 8th Gate Guy was legendary he was destined to lose not cause of the side effects but because Juubidara was holding back and enjoying Might Guy’s power and Taijutsu. Guy needed the help of Minato, Lee, and Kakashi to pull off his attacks or he would of been defeated sooner as well

You couldn't feel the change in the character, because it was clear that his change in a simple super quick conversation with very few words was purposeful. Apparently Kishimoto didn't want to do something deep and complex, he wanted to make the story progress quickly and not develop an arc of reflection and redemption of a villain, and in that, I thought Kishimoto made a lot of mistakes, because the end of his story was very weak.
