I think what people have to understand when watching these type of vids is that clearly it wont be that easy in real life but it doesn't meant it cant be effective especially if you practice. I find that guys who are most anti defensive tactics are the ones who don't take the time to practice it so it can be effective. When you go to take a guy down the goal is to be quick ,effective and not get hurt. It helps to at least have some sort of idea on how you want to go about it and to learn multi techniques so if one doesn't work you can go to another one.

A general rule of thumb is that complicated movements to get someone under control only work and look cool in Hollywood productions, real life never follows a script.

Anyone notice how many times the attacker's hand was within range to grab the gun?

Impossible to take the cops gun. It has a lock that makes it impossible to take without pushing the well hidden button.

I have worked in law enforcement for 23 years - and l would most definitely NOT recommend allowing the attacker's arm or hand to go anywhere NEAR your gunside, especially outstretched and literally within inches of your sidearm, no matter how quick the movement or how much restraint you think you're employing.

This is absolute karate class nonsense. Police officers should be taught judo or aikido, not some bunch of slow motion nonsense. The keys to any effective takedown are momentum and speed. No wasted motion. This is the stuff people dream up when working with a rag doll partner.

This is mostly BJJ which has proven to be more effective than Judo or Aikido.

Most aikido is exactly what you are describing this video as. Judo would be serviceable, but people don't always wear a jacket that you can grip. It's probably a better idea to utilize no-gi BJJ or something similar like catch wrestling for grappling techniques. Add an all-around striking style like muay thai and weapons training, then you have a workable self-defence system. Dog Brothers Martial Arts (DBMA) is a prime example of a system like this. I do think that the technique in the video could be simplified, however. By using a shuck (quickly rotating the left shoulder clockwise) I believe this would eliminate the need for circling their arm as shown. The arm drag is definitely a legit technique, though.
