Teachings of Jesus Christ | Swami Sarvapriyananda

Jesus Christ (c. 4 BC - c. AD 30) was a spiritual Teacher, who preached a gospel of faith, love and forgiveness. His life and teachings led to the emergence of a new religion - Christianity, which became the dominant religious force in the western world. The Christian religion reveres Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Jesus is also an important prophet in Islam, and his teachings are widely admired by other religious traditions.
Jesus was born in Bethlehem, Judea - then part of the Roman Empire, under the rule of Herod. Jesus was born into a Jewish family; his parents were Mary and Joseph of Nazareth. Jesus was born in Bethlehem because his father had to travel to his place of birth to take part in the Roman census. Because of over-crowding due to the census, the family were offered a place in a stable, and hence Jesus was born in the humblest of surroundings - in a manger surrounded by animals.
According to the Gospels, the birth of Jesus was proclaimed to shepherds in nearby fields. Later on, Jesus was visited by three wise men from the east offering gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Shortly after Jesus’ birth, Herod was told a ‘future king of the Jews’ had been born in his kingdom. Feeling his temporal power threatened, he ordered all young Jewish boys to be killed. The Gospels relate how Joseph was warned in a dream and, as a result, took his family to Egypt before returning to Nazareth when it was considered safe.
Not much is known about Jesus’ early life, the Gospels concentrate on the last couple of years when he was active in his ministry. However, Jesus is believed to have followed in his father’s footsteps and trained to be a carpenter. Some have also suggested during this period Jesus travelled to India and Persia where he learned something of India’s spiritual tradition before returning to Nazareth to begin his ministry.
All three synoptic gospels say Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist, in the River Jordan. This symbolic baptism was the beginning of Jesus’ ministry.
Following his baptism, Jesus spent 40 days in the desert where he was tempted by the Devil. However, he passed the test and refused any temptations of wealth or worldly gain.
Jesus’s teachings were characterised by short, pithy statements that used striking imagery to capture the imagination of listeners. His most famous teachings are the sermon on the mount.
-Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
-Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
-Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
- Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
- Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
- Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
- Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

@gherrrie so you think that there are different Gods? There is only one God the creator and He/She created all living beings and this whole creation. We can invoke That God in anything anywhere, because He is Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent. You can believe God to be All powerful and infinitely Loving or you can believe the narrow minded prejudiced propaganda you have been taught. God appears to different cultures in different ways/forms. All the different paths lead to the Supreme Lord. There is only one Supreme Lord!!! Hinduism is Liberal enough to incorporate all the world's religions and respects All. That is why they don't believe in forced conversions. Really enjoyed this. I was raised Christian, but grew to become an atheist looking at all the bigotry and hypocrisy done in the name of Christ. Eventually, found myself needing God and began searching. Found yoga and mysticism, spent some time visiting a Sikh gurdwara, and found myself relating everything back to Christ. Rereading the gospels, Jesus seems to have the same message as all the eastern mystics and sages. I even found in the Orthodox tradition a practice of fasting, meditation, and what's essentially pranayama with the goal of Theoria; a transformative experience of Christ that results in you becoming Christ-like. Basically, yoga. Buuuut Christians still denounce yoga and the wisdom of the East as deceptions from Satan...it's really disheartening. Some times I wonder if Armageddon will be a self fulfilling prophecy brought about by religious intolerance.

@@jncc1701 Thanks, same to you. I just try to remember the most important commandment, "Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’" Matt 22:37-39 When we're in such a state of connection with God, we cannot help but love our neighbors as ourselves, because we truly know them as such. Also, when it comes to sin, I don't look at this in terms of morality, but connectivity. That which inhibits our connection/union with God, ie the unbridled passions, is sin.

@@mos619 similar to you but a variation... Would you say that the Real "telling" need & "sign" of the "marked" difference is *conviction* of Sin & Turning to God *Through* our forgive ess who is Jesus THE "marked" Sacrifice HimSelf.. And after Receiving this as a WAY or THE way that it is *Possible* to choose to Love God & Man in *Truth*...being made FREE to... It isnt a religious or cultural issue... It could even be understood that animals are also our neighbours & upon checking in with The bible we find that God "Gave" humanity a vegan diet in Genesis... But that doesnt mean that God rejects meat eaters. It is about a personal Relationship WITH God that Enables us to do ultimate Godgood works rather than being a do gooder in our own eyes, which will never cover sin.... But... Its the only option i think if true forgiveness isnt received through repentance...? .. Thats how i presently see it & find that the word *Connection* is becoming more important along with dis connection.....& there is much to be said on that in Many ways East or West... The Ability TO connect or disconnect is GIVEN... Not... Earned.. Yet seeking could be seen as earning yet ultimately we find we were being carried to the GIVER yet imagined we were working & earning?... Yet to Not receive from THE Giver means we are left with the wages of sin which some people may call karma & some sowing & reaping....

@@shashankb46 it is not a claim by the Church, it is claimed in the Bible and a true Church has to follow what is written verbatim in the Bible. There can never be other ways as it is quite evident there is a valid contradiction in all the ways though there are few similarities. either all of them are false or one is true. God gives the opportunity for everyone to find the truth, the ultimate reality. At this stage only can God reveal the truth and that is just asking him simply. It’s beautiful you feel love for Jesus. I think all world religions have some similarities but Jesus teachings goes beyond similarities and goes into some things different than world religions. Explanation below 👇🏽 As swami is pointing out similarities like God existing, or God is powerful enough to become man, life after death exists, money and materialism will not give you what looking for, and even the law as Swami pointed out in the Sermon of the Mount. But Jesus goes a step further than world religions as well which was not brought up. 1. It’s not just enough to do more good than harm. Not enough to not kill, steal, lust or even have unrighteousness anger. But …we must love our enemies, we must forgive those who wrong, we must (as He pointed out in the story of the Good Samaritan) not ever neglect loving our neighbors (our neighbor is anyone in need), we must be perfect as God is perfect which is also in teaching of the Sermon of the Mount (right after the section of beautitudes swami brought up). Only then if we have lived a perfect life with no sin as God is sinless, do we have the right to be in eternal Heaven with Him based on our deeds. 2. Bc no human is perfect and no human can attain this standard but bc Jesus God wants all humans in Heaven forever, Jesus (though He was perfect and never sinned) went to the cross to take on the punishment for all our sin (all the ways we fall short of being perfect like God is perfect) upon Himself so that we could be forgiven of all our sins and be in Heaven with Him forever. That is the main difference. Most world religions talk about what we need to do to be good enough to be in Heaven or have mukti. Jesus says it’s not about what we have done. Our right for being in Heaven forever is bc of what He has done on the cross. So we can’t boast in the least bc it was never about what we did, but all bc of His taking on the punishment of our sin upon Himself on our behalf that we can enter. His will is to rescue us and He has proved it through going to the cross to take the punishment for our sin; so we can be forgiven. It takes great humility to admit God I could not enter on my own merit but need and accept what You did on the cross to enter. Thank you. May we all get to that humility. 😊

You are a very wise human being. And your remark is a huge compliment to all hindu people. As you know many westerners who were raised in a Christian culture are wishing and wanting to have a more hindu orientation to spirituality. All the hindu spiritual traditions and the Buddhism that grew out of it are by far the most elevated, sophisticated and life affirming spiritual systems ever created by man. I hope to be born into this in another life. Right now I try to bring it into my western background. Namaste.
