ok this one is a bit mundane, but i felt like sharing it. so our protestant religion teacher, who was actually pretty nice let us choose a topic and i suggested we discuss occultism, because I was reading Lovecraft at the time and kinda felt it. We then proceeded to watch a documentary about sects, which was okay. Half the class was probably doing homework anyway.

As long as it's ABOUT religions without indoctrination works for me. Never patronize any one particular religion as there are so many different varieties around the world. (A big reason why US Constitution requires separation of church and state. )

I feel that school shouldn't preach to kids, it's the parents business to bring kids to church not the schools

They don’t preach. They teach about different religions which you learn from an outsiders perspective to understand other people’s beliefs. It’s just to encourage diversity and make kids more tolerant.

This is in the UK. Americans are ignorant and British kids are sometimes uncultured. In the UK we also discuss different religions and teach children about the basic principles of each of the major religions up to the age of 16.

An honest uncensored dissertation of what some religions preach generates (in many of us) disgust... such as the biblical endorsement of slavery, homophobia and misogyny... and let's not forget the nasty hell threats in the NT and Quran. Why should anyone be tolerant of such ideas?

Most religions teach right from wrong which is important to learn so yes religion does me to be a part of school.

@@socksumi True, but they probably teach what the peaceful believers believe and do, which makes up the majority of both Muslims and Christians because they don't know their own religions. It could also have the advantage of helping the students become irreligious by making them understand that all religions are equally nonsense. Here in Turkey, for example, the students are brainwashed into Islam by our current rightist government, yet nobody can answer the question "Why would any Non-Muslim believe in Islam". If we were taught other religions as well as Islam, I believe that more Muslim-born children would ask that question to themselves and come to the conclusion that their family's religion is not special.

Teaching religion to a bunch of atheists. Not sure what that accomplishes. It doesn't generate respect for the religious, it does the opposite. It makes me realize how irrational their beliefs are.

I don't think the point is to convert or anything like that but to educate people on the beliefs of others

@@adammills9715 RE teachers do not take a critical approach to the "beliefs of others". For obvious reasons, they treat any and all religious beliefs as benign. Are they honest enough to discuss the oppression, suffering and bloodshed caused by mankind's religions? Are they even aware of it themselves? I never heard anything like that when I took RE.

@@socksumi I think some of them are. When I was in school my religion teacher was quite open to talking about alot of things, the attrocities of religion included. I don't believe the author of this chanel is trying to critique or to highlight something as irrational when it comes to religious belief. I also don't think he's trying to generate respect. I think he's trying to inform and entertain and I enjoy the work he puts out

We form our own beliefs. In the UK most people are Atheist or Agnostic, especially in London. It is very secular. There are very few religious Christians and the only religious people are the minority of Orthodox Jews and Hindus and the very many Muslims who are still outnumbered by Agnostics and Atheists. I grew up in a secular background but the family did have a religion which they didn’t really practice but I grew up to be a Skeptic.
