Notice how the mom said they even pick out things like sugar scrub and hair dye. It's not all necessity, but personal grooming and what makes them feel good. They lose the EXTRA money if they are choosing not to take care of themselves.

Tbh it's not just grooming, it's just cute. Girls typically are the ones who go out of their way to do such things, so the kids probably saw mommy do it and wanted to join her. It's a parent child bonding moment, even cuter if dad joins

Latchkey kid here, too, and I love this! One of my boys has a job so he uses his money to buy extras that I wouldn’t necessarily spring for(like handmade guy soap or fancy body wash) but i am really digging this because I can start sooner with his little brother. I had to figure it out on my own and honestly, I’m still figuring things out. 😆

Hey. There are a lot of coping methods for being scared to spend money. I would personally suggest starting small. Buy yourself a small something maybe once or twice a week. For me, budgeting helps. I set aside all my bills, and then calculate how much I can spend each week. Keep a set amount in your account at all times in case of emergency. Like. Pretend the money doesn't exist, and you can't use it (except for emergencies)

Honestly $100 for 3 months is a good amount. I have to spend around that much for myself every 2 months. I’m 14 and I know that prices are starting to get unreasonable for basic necessities. I went to the store the other week to get some shaving cream and it was $7 for a can, mouthwash is $7-$15, toothpaste + toothbrush $8, shampoo and conditioner $10+, body wash $10+, skin care $20+, I also had to use some of my money on other products I ran out of like cleaning supplies or things like that, and I might buy some clothes or undergarments which are very expensive for some reason…do better Walmart. Anyways i think that the parents are doing a great thing with this, teaching their kids how to budget and get used to the real world! Our teen has a $50 a month clothing budget. She can use it monthly, or save it up over several months and use it all at once or for bigger items. When we started, she went straight to a name brand store and then purchased one pair of leggings…that’s all she could get. A week later when she realized she needed something for summer and she didn’t have anything, she had to evaluate her purchases. She’s become a very savvy shopper, saving her money whenever she can, saving up for bigger things, and planning for things she will need the next season. She now has a job and is saving for her first car and we helped her set up a budget so she can track what she spends and see how much her choices affect her goals. Having control over your finances gives so much freedom.

She actually states that they receive significantly more than they need for their hygiene products and they "...make a lot of extra money this way". Learning to budget would be having an actual realistic amount to spend. Also you're shopping at target which is far from the most economical place to purchase hygiene items. Even if the kid's switched their tooth brushes out every month I can't see them even touching that much money. Shampoo and conditioner for a child should surely last for three months especially an entire bottle of each. Bar soap would be a few bars and liquid would last even longer. I think teaching your kids where to shop smart and cheaper would be more along the line of budgeting. Letting your kids buy extra stuff that even most adults who do budget can't afford doesn't really say anything.

Why doesn't the extra money go towards next quarter's hygiene budget? Why not keep the extra money and put it in a savings account for something they may really want? Why are you forcing them to spend it on hygiene products when self care is different for everyone? Some people self care by playing video games or bike riding, why not allocate the leftover funds to that? Sorry this is long? I'm just very confused and don't think you realize that your idea might not be helpful.
