TEACHING HIGH SCHOOL VS. MIDDLE SCHOOL

Hello everyone! Happy Sunday to you! This video is all about my thoughts on teaching High School vs. Middle School. This is my first year teaching 6-8th grade, so I will for sure make an updated video later on in the year, but these are my thoughts as of right now. I take you through how I went from a High School classroom classroom to a Middle School classroom, what is different, and what is similar. At the end of the day, I feel so grateful to have enough strength to wake up each day and do what I love, which is teaching and working with our future generation. Do you teach MS or HS? Or are you in school and know what you want to teach? Let me know in the comments and we can chat about it!

I’m currently a long term sub in 8th grade ELA and the difference between 6,7 and 8 is honestly crazy. 6th graders are silly and extremely interested in everything about you as a person, 7th grade is just terrifying, but 8th graders are hilarious but still do what they need to do!

I know what you mean! I’ve been flip-flopping between secondary and elementary. I keep being drawn to secondary education because the person who inspired me to be a teacher was my high school English teacher. I had an old teacher who said, “teachers are good people, and you’re good people.”

I’m a junior in college and I feel the same way MacKenzie! I’ve been stuck between either elementary or secondary for awhile. Think about why you wanted to become a teacher. Think about who inspired you to be a teacher. I found that helps the decision. I’m finally deciding on secondary (I started out in secondary but thought about elementary and even special education) my high school English teacher inspired me to be a teacher so that’s what I want to be.

Hi!! First of all, thank you so much for being yourself and always believe in the process! Right now I am passing trough a lot mentally. I have always wanted to be a chemist and i had a lot of expectations in it. This year I entered in chemical masters and it let down all my expectations in it! Thanks to your videos, I began to look with other eyes my perspective about the future and I finally understood that what always gave me happiness and joy in my day life was the look that other people have in their face when they began to understand something that I teach them, and not the process in chemistry in it self! Thanks to you, I started to get into other possibilities like being a chemical teacher and everything is starting to make so much sense so continue to believe in the process because every step in life has some kind of a meaning even if it hurts in certain moments!! Keep going and keep save!! Kisses from a Portuguese fan.

Ms. Brittany, I have always loved literature and writing. I much prefer creative writing over formal academic writing because I write fiction in my free time and I am working towards my dream of becoming an author. English is my favorite subject in school and I endeavor to be an English teacher someday. I am rather interested in secondary education, for I would like to specialize in English and Creative Writing. It was wonderful that you were given the opportunity to teach both high school and middle school. As a freshman in high school, I certainly see the differences of middle school and high school. However, they are the same in many ways and I relish each experience as a part of the journey. Your videos are so actuating and uplifting. I love you

I was deeply moved by your desire to teach in your former school and need to take a year off before deciding your plans; high school is often not the nicest place with a bunch of people who are also sardined-up in a can who can be combative as they try to figure out who they really are. I felt like I needed more than a year off when my friend died unexpectedly. Seeing the light in your eye was deeply moving for me and can understand how much your students love you being there. I am an online tutor teaching mostly high-school/university STEM but recently tutoring small groups of grade 8. I think I really enjoy them - they were giving me fist-bumps on zoom which made me feel so good.

Hello Britney! I've watched you for 2 years now and you are a great inspiration for me. I would like to share with you a bit of my history. I used to be a Polish teacher in a Polish middle-school (my first job) and that was such a hard experience for me. I couldn't cope with the amount of tasks and responsibility. But the hardest thing was to maintain the groups (the students barely payed attention to what I said and challenge me all the time to the extend I felt bullied sometimes, as strange as it may sound). In time I was more and more scared and depressed by all the pressure and felt like an actor who has to stand in the light of other teachers' and students' judgement everyday. Can you please say one day how do you manage difficult situations in a classroom (when the students challenge the teacher)? Thank you! :)

My mom teaches in middle-school,I can't tell you how happy she is when she comes at home, she said that being a middle-school teacher is watching kids being adults. She tried high-school for a day,she didn't enjoy it because it is pretty tough to tell a 14 to 18 year old what to do,they are indipendent. She is contained but in the same time open with her students, she is a role model for me.🥰 I am 14 btw.

Hi Mrs Brittany, I really enjoyed hearing your journey from a high school teacher to middle school teacher. I thought that it was good for you to return to your high school as a teacher because you're giving back to the community. I have done something similar with my high school when I volunteered to help the marching band from loading up equipment, and cheering them on during performances. I was in the marching band all four years and had just recently graduated from high school where I wanted to give back to the music program that I was fortunate enough to be in. I am so sorry to hear that it hurt you to not be teaching in the high school anymore. I thought that it was good for you to take some time off to learn more about yourself because sometimes we need to reflect on life. I am a community college student double majoring in Business Administration Human Resources Management and Human Services Technology. Human services interested me because I took an assessment to which career path is right for me and I possessed certain human services helper qualities such as working in a group, and being organized. I have some news to share with you. I have decided to take the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year last Thursday because online classes have taken its toll on me. My anxiety and stress levels was high, tied, breakouts, didn't want to hang out, and had an emotional breakdown resulting in me crying. I am taking this time off to figure out who am I outside of being a student because I have been going to school for twenty years now. I try not to let others know if I'm upset or need to talk because I don't want to burden them with my problems. Can I please you ask something Mrs Brittany? How have you coped with being forced to give up something you love and done your entire life? If you have any advice on how I can cope with this matter, I would kindly appreciate it. Do you have any more experiences with tough times? If you feel comfortable to share, I look forward to hearing more about it or if not, I understand. Thank you for your message at the beginning when you said you care about your viewers because we care about you too. Please continue to be a compassionate and sweet soul along with don't ever change.

You’re so strong. I’m so sorry you feel like you had to give up something you loved. That’s how I felt at one point when leaving my old school, but I took things day by day and surrounded myself with people I could talk to about my feelings. Take some time for you and know it’s okay to not be okay. 🤍

Thank you for the encouraging words Mrs Brittany and I have been things day by day since the decision. I have never had to give up something before, but I know it will make me a stronger person on the emotional side. I have been talking to my mother who is my biggest supporter and academic tutor who is pretty much a sister to me along with others. I will definitely keep you posted with my life update.

I think school demographics also play a role. I teach in a middle/high school and I’m teaching one section of middle school for the first time and it’s also diff bc a lot of our middle schools apply and leave out school in hs for standardized schools. (I’m in NYC) The middle schoolers are so high level and actually are more easily redirected!

Hi there! I think it depends on your university or the program you are in. If math education will set you up to become a math teacher in your local schools, that sounds great!

Five Foot One Teacher You are such an inspiration. and I want to go back to my school. i’m a sophomore in highschool. And i want to be the best teacher i can be. Is it a good idea not to assign homework and only make practice packets mandatory. Should I add class participation? What do you think I should do to be the best teacher possible. Jalil

You seem like you really believe and care about your students. My didn't get abused by my father and did nothing. Then they told me that I couldn't achieve shit. The kicker is that they called themselves a "welcoming community"
