Teaching Her Sign Language

We are trying to teach our autistic toddler sign language (ASL). Sign language can be a form of communication used for nonverbal kids, autism, the deaf community, or any child that is speech delayed. It's not specific to just one diagnosis. Penelope is doing an amazing job and we are SO proud of her.

For liam: there are one piece bathing suits for kids with long sleeves and long pants with a zipper in the back. This might be a good option for him for bedtime. You could also get one and give it to a local seamstress for a pattern to make the same thing with a different material.

Let me just say thank you for teaching your children sign language. As a partially non verbal person with a hard of hearing girlfriend and a partially non verbal friend it's a really helpful skill to have. I'm trying to learn ASL on my own now that I'm older and it would be so much easier to communicate if I had learned it when I was younger. It's an amazing tool for any person and would probably save me and some people I know lots of trouble when communicating

Glad to see that Nellie is progressing with her eating. I absolutely love ASL, I know at the children’s center where I work we show the infants and toddlers how to sign; it especially helps them communicate what they want, need and feel but don't necessarily have the verbal skills to express themselves. I know I definitely want to broaden my horizon with ASL and learn more.

Woo Hoo!!!!!!! Nellie is doing fantastic with signing. How long ago did you start?!?! She loves it. She was trying to play the parents nightmare game with you. “Fetch what I dropped mommy!” She is loving that you are giving her so much visual stimuli with the signs. And No, it is utterly ridiculous that people think that learning sign might prevent her from wanting to talk. Especially given that she is surrounded by language at all times in her environment, especially in coincidence with signing itself. Sometimes you can get a better sense for a nonverbal child’s receptive language using sign. In studies, NT children who are taught sign in their preverbal development actually talk earlier and with more sophistication when they attain speech. The manual dexterity for simple signing develops earlier than the oral musculature required for speech. Sadly, despite the fact that I had a background in signed English growing up, AC like Liam completely rejected both signing and PECS. He inherited his mother (and possibly his father too) ‘s stubbornness. He wanted to talk. So, we got him a cheap talker and when he pushed the pecs symbol it spoke the words for him in mama’s voice. (Excepting Mémère, he would get offended if other voices were on it, lol.) Eventually that led to him speaking his first word, as he pressed the button. I joke with people about it because my son’s first word wasn’t mamma or dada or even more. His first word was popcorn because that is the reward we used most often with him because it can be so light and free of fats and so on. It was healthier for a little little guy than other choices he would react to. We had a lot of trouble with AC in his early years because he had very VERY few motivators when he was little. And I didn’t like that we were reduced to using food as a reinforcer a lot of the time. My other two boys had a variety of motivators and that made things a lot easier on my “externally applied” mom guilt. lol Anyway, just had to say the WooHoo. Go Nellie for eating all independently and signing like a pro starter!! You go baby girl!!!

Nellie is doing amazing. so glad that shes taking to food more, that will motivate her to communicate so much more. one thing to think about, my friend mentioned this a while back, but she also has a child on the spectrum. he struggled with communication, with learning sign especially, because some signs would sort of trigger his stims. so if that's something that you notice starts happening don't get discouraged. but maybe look into modified sign.

Works great! We do sew on extra fabric that acts as hand covers though so she can’t use her nails to dig in her neck and such. Might be cheapest trying this route!

Just a suggestion, you should try wooden toys and toys that don’t have sounds or colors. The simpler the better. Also, dim lighting and minimizing your space and including pastel and light colors, are much better for a child’s cognitive development than bright preschool color and loud toys, though little ones love them and they can be super distracting and fun! ❤️ What we do to save money with our special needs 4 year old, is cut off the feet covers to the sleepers and put them on backwards OR get sleepers that don’t have feet!! We’ve had our share of cleaning up fecal smearing and urine. Mind you, he is potty trained. It’s just a sensory input he needs. It works so well!

Aren’t there modeling clays that could approximate that texture? I am unsure of this, as my bio boys didn’t smear, and my step son had outgrown it by the time I met my spouse. I am thinking about my childhood and clays that used to come in like squares of rolled tube shapes (I know sooooo helpful, right). It was just called modeling clay when I was a kid but now there are a billion different kinds of clay like and dough like and foam like modeling substances. The original (not the genuine article clay from in the ground clay) I think when warmed that would approximate a similar texture, though probably smoother, but you could then add seeds or nut fragments or something to roughen it a little. Just a thought.

This amazes me. I'm in Northern Ireland. I have 2 with autism. You literally get hardly any help. My youngest was non verbal. It wasn't till 3 that she got some help with speech. No signing help. They are now 7 and 15 and I literally had to go the high court to get the help they were intitled to get. I now realise I'll have to save up and go private otherwise we will get no more help. I can't even get a basic blood test for my daughter. I'd like a play therapist to be there to help, the consultant refuses.

have you tried putting some sort of sensory toy in Liam's bed with him in efforts to stop the smearing? No idea if this would work or not, or if there are any sensory objects out there that would be safe enough to leave in a bed with a child. Maybe some toy that's really soft and pliable that could mimic the texture that he's seeking? Again, not really sure if there's anything out there that's safe to leave with him, but just an idea I wanted to put out there. :)

Thanks for reaffirming what I felt about Roblox, there being ti much creator content that was often inappropriate. My sons tried it for a few weeks last summer and then I took it away after one of the games scared him. (He was only 6)

Do you know if Liam smears for sensory input or b/c he wants the mess cleaned off of him? If it's the latter, maybe suggest to his team to have "change diaper" as one of the first PECS requests he learns. Or you can print out a picture, laminate it, hang it somewhere accessible and teach him to bring you to it/point/tap it/indicate somehow when he needs a change. And of course keep the backwards onesies on in the meantime. 😉

It’s sensory. He’s been doing it since he was 14 months.
