I have been using EL for the past 5 years in 2nd grade. Use the Open Up Resources slides to help with the pacing of lessons. ILC also has slides that are interactive, but they are quite dry. I also add to my slides depending g on what my students need. The first year of EL was challenging, but I truly enjoy teaching it now and my students become “experts” in the topics and really enjoy the modules. Good luck! 😊

Does EL Math stand for "Ellevation" math supplements? Thanks,

EL stands for Expeditionary Learning. It’s an ELA curriculum.

I have been teaching the HMH Into Reading in first grade for three or four years now in my big Urban District. We have a 90 minute block for reading. About 20 minutes for whole group, 60 minutes in three independent stations that students rotate to, and ten minutes for wrap up and review.

Yes! It is set up in a very "familiar" way to many of us in my district, for better or worse! I am excited to try it out and see what I think!

Great video as always! I'm eager to hear your opinions on EL as you start to use it. I've found it to be lacking in several areas. Students (and teachers) get bored with having the same topic for 9 weeks (and "birds" really lasts 18 weeks). It's true they have some nice books for teacher read alouds but not many engaging books for students to actually read. The decodable readers for students (skills block component) are terrible. They often don't make any sense on their own so you have to read a two page teacher text (not included in student decodable) before hand. This means you can't send those decodable readers home because parents won't understand the story. I think a decodable reader should make sense all on its own. Our EL is about 6 years old so maybe they've made improvements.

I will definitely keep you updated on the process!! One negative about EL for me was definitely the time spent on each topic! I understand you need to time to build deeper knowledge, but felt like the same goal could be accomplished with slightly shorter units lol! Next fall I will share how ours looks too so we can see how different the newer versions are. There is also a new phonics curriculum they are coming out with but I don't believe it would be ready for a pilot.

Hi Susan, I just love the slides you create! Have you done a video to "teach" that process? I may be a little bit technology challenged compared to tall the ease with which you maneuver in and out of apps and sites. Do you think I could attach them to my planbook electronic lesson plans?

@@SusanJonesTeaching hi! Thanks for the quick response. I guess the reason I am asking really is our school is adopting HMH. I wanted to join SJTclub but wasn’t sure how to go about it all.

HMH does not have a high ESSA rating and using Ed reports as a gage on what curricula are evidence based is flawed …

  • @SusanJonesTeaching

Hi! We are only using Ed Reports as a gauge because it is, unfortunately, required as one here in MA for the new literacy curriculum bill being put forward. That being said, we looked at every curriculum and used our own scale on what is important to us as a K-6 district. HMH was not one of my top choices, but I am one person on a committee of many who represent different grade levels, backgrounds, and desires for our larger district which spans 3 towns and 7 grade levels. When looking into the curriculum on my own, the newer Structured Literacy Component which just came out last year is far superior than what they had previously and aligns with SOR in many, many ways from what I saw. This is an area I am excited to dive into more during the pilot to see how it holds up.

Can you quickly explain the “shopping for books” your students were doing? I saw the photo post on the cover of the video and want to know more.

Yes! I simply put out a bunch of paper decodables and Scholastic News magazines and priced them as 1, 5, or 10 cents. They collected a bunch of the texts and then came to me and we priced it out together. I would write the amount they owe me on a sticky note and they would take it over to the play coins to make that amount. Then they would bring it to me and if it was correct, I would give them their books to take home! I did it in small groups of 3-4 at a time while other students worked on something independently so I could really check with each student.
