This method is amazing. I tried with my malamute puppy today and he learned gee and haw in one training session! Thank you!

Very cool because I didnt realise that Gee and Haw was used for dogs aswell. (Makes sense). Those are the commands that we used for our working horses!

What a great video. I was wondering how to teach my dogs gee and haw where I could practice at home. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

For those of you concerning the dogs coming back for a treat on a run, most dogs would find running in the outside world WAY more rewarding than some stupid treat.

I taught mine by walking and saying the command when turning. Once I had a few good leaders, I would train newbies by adding them into a team with more experienced dogs. With this method, I would be concerned when running that the dog would look to you for a treat whenever you give a command.

So I know this video is old but I'm wondering why people keeping saying things about the dogs looking back for treats. Surely they don't give their dogs a treat for every time they ask their dog to sit. I taught my dog to sit, down, and a dozen other tricks but once she figured it out it's not like she required it in her day to day life. I told her to stand while wiping her paws, but she didn't turn around looking for a treat, she never got one either!

To those commenters concerned about dogs doubling back for a treat while on an actual walk/run-remember-"the rat is always right". In other words, we don't get to choose what is rewarding-the learner does. In general, Sibes find movement very rewarding. Food rewards are inconvenient while running-I use forward movement as the reward.

Thank you for posting that. How do you think the directional commands translate into the same thing when you find yourself being behind your dog, as you would be in any mushing sports, (gee and haw bein mushing commands)? In a word, how do you make the transition to teaching these two commands when you need your dog to respond to these commands when you are behind your dog? Thanks.

What a great demonstration! What kind of clicker is that? The ones I know of have a recessed thumb button -- they won't work under your foot. Thanks for posting, and even posting your mistakes. LOL Which, I'm SURE you did just to make us feel better....

Great video but just curious, if you use "down" to get off the ottoman or whatever else she's on, then what do you use for lie down?

This is great for training your dog to a target! I hope the intention was not to train the dog to Gee and Haw down a trail!

  • @JOLLYROGE007

Of course the intention is to teach them directional commands down the trail. The Husky is a sled dog. How else can you communicate right or left fork in the road? Or use right and left instead of gee and haw.

Excellent question! I used "plotz" for her cue to lie down. I also used a hand signal for "lie down" at one time and originally may have included the word "down". This video is fairly old so I can not recall which came first.
