Teaching A Horse To Backup On The Ground Two Different Ways

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I thought I would bring you along for some groundwork starting with this little B.C. Wildie that is in for some training. I haven't started much with her at all and now I need to get on with having her move around me without fear and make space using quiet commands. In this video I show two different ways I might consider moving a horse backwards and what I think about when I do it.

    Wow- what a sweet girl! She reminds me (looking gorgeous groomed) of the irish Connemara pony- there are lots of them that start as dark grey and become later a very sophisticated dappled grey...

    I didn’t even think about having your thumb down instead of up on the halter to encourage back up. Makes so much sense!

    Even though I'm not a rider or have access to horses, I'm living vicariously! I admire your attitude and approach. Many years (decades) ago I did have a couple of opportunities to be on a horse. In this encounter, I hope you will see humor as well as seeing my senses awakening to the fact that horses are communicators. I wanted to try to mount a horse from the ground for the very first time. Well! In my efforts to pull myself up, I took the horse off balance. It had to resettle its self. As I stood there astonished, the horse swung its head around and looked at me. The impression I got from the horse's facial expression was: How did you do that? I really wanted to respond: I'd like to know that too. The second encounter that stands out in my memory. I was already mounted and I wanted the horse to start moving, but did not know what to do. In the meantime, the horse was grazing. I had the notion that the reins guided the horse, so I picked up the rein with my right hand and lightly pulled, but the horse ignored me. So, then I tugged more. Suddenly, the horse turned its head, looking at me and moving its tongue. I received the impression that I needed to release the rein. When I did the horse moved its head back, but it did not go back to grazing. I felt bad thinking I hurt its mouth. I verbally said to the horse: I didn't mean to hurt your mouth. I also leaned forward rubbing its neck. Then I sat up and said "walk" To my surprise and delight, the horse started walking. So I expressed this by again rubbing its neck and saying "Thank you!"

    You should go back to horses if you can because from what you tell here you pay a lot of sensitive attention to their communication. You could build excellent relationships with horses I think.

    Thank you for sharing your stories! I really appreciate you taking the time to do that. It sounds like you had and would have a great connection with horses and that's fantastic! I really like to hear stories like this and I'm quite happy those horses had somebody that listened to them and made good efforts.

    Graeme, how did you know it was time to start this with her? Is it just a matter of a certain amount of trust built? Or were there certain things that needed to be taught first? Obviously she needed to be good with haltering and leading first--but anything else?

  • @StableHorseTraining

    @StableHorseTraining

    Nothing else in particular. If the halter training and leading has gone well then the trust should be there and it's time for more styles of communication

    Watching this again, will help with a new behavior Bear has been doing. He tosses His head away now . Not always but enough where we need to figure out how to respond. I feel like He is saying “I don’t want to be where I am with you now “. What you showed in this video will help in an nonaggressive way . Holding the rope with my thumb down , will block Him from doing this. It seems just doing this will give Bear the message Head tossing isn’t working for Him . Is that right ? 💜🐴 💜
