Teaching a Bird to Take a Bath | Alexandrine PROVES This Works!
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Khush is an alexandrine parakeet who is less than a year old who came from a terrible home where water was only ever used as a scare tactic. However, parrots are SO INTELLIGENT, that if you take the time to train them and desensitize them to it in a positive way, they can learn to enjoy water again as a bathing tool! Water should never be used as punishment.
Thank you to Haley for bringing Khush in and trusting me to work with him! Keep in mind in this session I am morphing and changing the behavior I am looking for using "capturing" (which means to wait for a behavior to naturally present itself rather than manipulating the animal's body to achieve it)
With capturing you can have much longer training sessions vs if you are doing what I refer to as a "formal" session where you are training an actual trick behavior like the wave, spin around, retrieve, etc.

It's so heartwarming to see a bird that has been terribly disrespected be introduced to an obviously loving and caring family, this has made my day
That was so sweet. I loved the end bath. He looked so proud of himself.
Dave is hilarious "can we see that" 😂😂😂
My budgie bathed nearly every day. Every night when I washed my makeup off my face it was so hard to keep her off my hands as I cupped the water to splash the soap off my face. She enjoyed sitting on my hands and splashing around in the water so much. It pains me to think someone could make a parakeet afraid of water, and I am so glad you taught this 'keet to enjoy bathing again. Thanks for all the work you guys do for birds and people, Birdtricks team!
He looks so happy in the end!!!! Hahaha spreading his wings
So sad to hear this little ones beginning, but knowing now he/she is in a safe and loving environment gives hope for the future. It was amazing how quickly he/she picked up your cues. Seeing the final results was wonderful, so glad they sent you the clip.
Why do all these horrible, ill-prepared people have birds and here I am still birdless after all these years 😭 I'm so glad Khush was rehomed before anything more tragic could happen and he's in a home that clearly has his best interest at heart and is putting the work in to follow through on your training.

Have you tried the SPCA? The rescue and take in all kinds of animals. Ours has Rabbits, hamsters, birds etc...I've even seen a monkey.

I agree! And I tried my spca, they wanted 3k for a $600 bird.
Glad to see him start to bathe. One thing that bothers me is when someone adopts a bird or any animal they think it's been abused because it is afraid of something when there is no history of abuse. Some animals are just phobic or have not been taught or are being taught wrong.

It's the same with my bird. Some people are like ''Oh, that must be difficult, to have such a traumatized bird'' He's not traumatized, he's just not used to anything, which is why he's scared of everything. I'm his third owner (for as far as I know) and I know his second owners didn't abuse him. They didn't properly care for him, but that was just because the bird was sort of dumped on them and they had no idea how to care for a parrot. I don't know about his first owners, but I doubt they ever abused him. I also doubt they really did anything with him at all, since it took me three years to get him to not get furious with me for trying to hang a new toy in his cage... He's doing way better now, though!

@@sannedieseltje Thank you for letting us observe his little life here, you are both beautiful. Have had Cockatiels for 7 or 8 years and learn so much from BirdTricks. Keep going, and good job!

I understand where your coming from but sometimes the abuse is obvious. I never knew my dogs former owners but he was definatly kicked around. He was terrified of swinging legs when I got him. He had other signs to. Maybe its different with birds as they are not domesticated animals.

They did say that the previous owner ADMITTED to abusing the parrot. So i would say that it’s safe to say the parrot was abused.
I bought a bird bath on line for my Quaker parrot. She loves taking a bath 3-4 times a week. She lets me know when it's bath time by tapping the kitchen sink faucet.

Allen Coke so cute!
Wow. Just wow... cute bird tricks are fun, but it's a whole new joy to help a bird reclaim organic behaviors.
I really thought its impossibled to teach your bird to take a bath. Thats a really good video. Thank you for sharing it with us!
Beautiful boy ❤ Thank god he is safe now
What a sweet baby❤️ how could people punish these animals😭 I’m so glad he’s been rescued:)

Because they dont understand them.....they think birds are pets...they are not! They are companions and need to be thought of that way...all individuals with their own thoughts about things😉.
Hearing how this beautiful boy was abused broke my heart, I'm so happy he has such a loving family now that he trusts and can thrive with is just so beautiful. Your training is so gentle, kind and teaches the sweet birds they are safe. ❤️
18:51 Awwww,... it sounds like he’s saying “wow!” What a beautiful, intelligent, little bird!!!
This just brought be to tears and the video at the end , how fantastic was this birds response !
Amazing footage Jaime. You look amazing. And it’s really cool that you got that bird to accept baths!!! That’s really cool!!!
What a brilliant bird even after all that trauma. Amazing little guy and even more phenomenal owners. He’s so lucky to have found her! She’s perfect for him
That end video totally made my heart melt!
Oh, THAT was just AWESOME! LOVED seeing that response at the end!

What a clever bird! He looks so much better and happier
The video at the end made me so happy well done for being so patient So many people have expectations when getting a bird on their behaviour and they are all different and they all go through life like we do and have different experiences I loved this video thankyou xx
Sad to hear his story, but thank you for including us in on this kind of training. My new cockatiel Rascal does a head shake, but he does not fluff up. I am rewarding him in the shower with me. You guys are so great, the first thing Rascal is learning is to touch the target and go down the ladder to do it. He still doesn't like us much, but training and your diet is really helping. He is holding at 75 gms.
I'm sorry, did I hear that correctly? Someone locked a bird in a container with water for two weeks???

Alexandrine are super adorable!! ❤️
That end bit was so fun and rewarding! It seems he needed just a little push from you guys to start loving bathing! Good thing he did not have a fear form spraying bottles :) Reading the subtle body language accurately was super important here.
I love watching birds progress! You guys are awesome 👏🏻 Keep making these types of videos! 💚💚💚😍💜
How fricking precious !!!
You have such a gift with birds Jamie and there are so many who need your help .... this vid was a wonderful example ... both birds responded so well to your training
Omg! This was so sweet. Absolutely heart warming at the end.
OMG that ending was just too sweet!!
The video update at the end was AWESOME! Great job, BirdTricks!!
Y’all posted this at the perfect time! We are adopting a LSC2 who I’m told by rescuer might have been punished at some point with water so I’m excited to see this before I attempt trying to see how she does with a spray bottle
awww that video update they sent in! that's so amazing that he's learned to ... well, i'm not sure he quite LOVES it yet... it seems like he was more making bathing motions AT the water hahaha... but even that much seems like a huge step forward after only 2 sessions and the next day! so wonderful to see that Khush trusts his new family this much.
Awesome at the end! Great job!
🥳❤️ how sweet is the last clip enjoying the life and water 💦
Are you kidding me? What a GREAT outcome!!!!
A clever bird and a good trainer makes all the difference. Just wonderful. I’m really impressed. Thank you. Edit. Spelling.
This one was a tear tearjerker. I'm really happy that he could get to enjoy water once more!
This worked for me! Bert loves showers now! Thank you Bird Tricks!
Fantastic video! Instructions are detailed, clear and step by step. Another great video, thank you, Jamie and Dave!
Awesome Yay, Khush!
I’m not crying at the end. I’m really not. Love, patience and understanding ❤️
Yay. So so happy he has a safe and respectful home. ✌🏼
Omg how awesome !!!
ah I love this channel, thank you guys ❤. I adopted a 6 years old Indian ringneneck, he has big trauma, cant do any thing with him but he got better after 6 months and he allows me to touch him now after I developed a relationship, every thing I saw on on the internet didnt work at all, hopefully I will be able to teach how to take a path following this video, thank you again ❤
You can tell he really likes a bath, i think now he will certainty want more baths in the future, now it's more about getting a bath than getting a treat, ( or both) lol , thanx to you Jamie, happy bird , bet he will be dreaming of more spray baths, once again Jamie you really have the birď "education"!😁
💗 without writing a booklet... 😬 I must say... Every single tip has been spot on! 😎👌💗You've given so much simple training for ME to communicate/care with my parakeet (flew into pool area summer 2019! In FL) So you've helped ensure this little spunky/adorable guy is cared for nutritionally... emotionally...sleep, foraging & this exact bathing/spray bottle tip & so much more! Thanks so very much!!
That video at the end omg 😁👌💙
Made this look too easy. Lol ♥️
Super helpful will try this on my african grey !!
So sweet to see a bird that has been abused with water to now enjoy the water and bathing! You guys are truly bird life savers!
How cool is that Bird!
Your training sessions are so neat to watch!!! If y'all are ever down Louisiana or surrounding states doing these classes I love to know! It be awesome to do a class like this with my bird!
That was a great video!
Jamie I love you ❤️❤️ I wann be just like u when I grow up and save parrots
Very helpful video!
My poor grey is so neurotic she hates bathing in water and hates sprays even more. Just watering my plants seems to get her on edge. This is exactly what I was looking for to help me understand, I need to learn her body language better so I can help her out of her phobia and into a healthier mindset.
This worked for my cockatiel thank you so much! He was so happy he tired himself out and napped for the rest of the day after the bath session XD He seems to be more comfortable around me now too :)
This was incredible to watch, your videos are consistently entertaining and informational. Much admiration from Boise!
These session give so much anxiety. But seriously you guys are amazing at what you do. When the bird walked away and he didnt get a treat he didnt walk away agin. That was amazing
The video at the end 😭❤️
Wow. What an ending
just hearing what happened to the bird and how the owners helped him made me give this video a like
It doesn't matter what video I watch, no matter how many times, I learn something I didn't know. Thanks for making these available. I am slowly teaching Mojito to take a spray shower, I am hoping to work toward getting him into a sink shower. He is a small budgie, about 6 to 10 months old, (petco)
Good work!
My new bird LOVES the spraybottle was actualy the key to tameing him lol
Thank you for this video. I have a cockatiel that refuses to bathe. I don’t know if he’s afraid or just doesn’t enjoy it but he moves away when I spray him. I also leave a bowl of water at the bottom of the cage but he’s never bathed before. The only time I’ve seen a bathing response from him is when I fed him a wet basil leaf once and he tired rubbing up against it. My baby cockatiel tries to bathe in her water dish and will try to splash the water onto herself and hold out her wings for a bath so I get the spray bottle and she loves it. I have tried rewarding my adult cockatiel after spraying him with his favorite treat but I realize now I might have to reward him just for staying calm while I spray the bottle but not directly at him until he starts to associate it with positive rewards. I really hope this works!

It's now been a year, how has the progress been?
When I had my parakeet many years ago, I knew NOTHING about bird behavior or rewards or training. I feel much better qualified to be a bird buddy now! And I’m so interested & amazed how quickly birds can learn. If they just weren’t so messy...😜
Omg yes i needed this I got an alexandrine parrot a couple weeks ago and he HATES baths
I Bless You For Resqueing These Small Brothers&Sisters Of Ours From Human Heartlessness And Ignorance. Thank You. NAMASTE🙏🐦🦜❤️
Awwww ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I live in india and almost 1000 alxendrien and ring neck fly by my house and 2 ringnecks are tamed and now live with me
What a sweet beautiful boy . He’s amazing after the abuse he was going through good job little man
My african grey is afraid of the sound of the spray bottle but then I found another spray bottle which is electric and rechargeable and makes very little sound and not the hissing sound of a normal spray bottle and it works for bathing the bird
Omg the end video that was so sweet. Im looking at trying target training on a grouchy cockatoo, hes too aggressive for me to give treats to and im worried that if i use a bowl he will attack the bowl rather then grabbing a treat, is there another way? I was thinking of something like long tweezers however im not sure if that seems too aggressive to the bird or should i use bigger treats like a shelled almond so hes got a bigger target and my fingers are less risky?
Hey Jamie. I have a training question. I have an amazon that always gets aggressive when he is around other birds. He isn’t aggressive towards the birds but me. I have tried working with him while other birds are around by doing the tricks he knows and target training but he just ignores that and try’s to go after me. I don’t really know what else to do but I hope you can help!
what is the ideal size for alexandrine parrot cage?
What treat is she giving, please answer I’ve asked this so many times to you
You trained the lady to the clicker lol
HI Jamieleigh and Dave, trust you are well. I need some advice and help with my cockatoo that I have adopted. She is about 2 years old and I don't know her history but she does not want to bath or have water sprayed on her at all. She does however want to be outside in the rain every time it rains here in KzN (South Africa). The problem is that we have a short rain season and when it does rain here sometimes its freezing cold. Please let me know what what you recommend to get her used to bathing that wont require me waiting for the rain. :)
I have an eclectus, and he bathes, but when he does it, he is happy, but he doesn’t have the bathing response. Is this a problem?
What is the best thing to treat with i have 2 African Gary's and I am about to start clicker training
I have a young female eclectus, just hit 11 weeks, I’m wondering what if any training I should be starting with?
is ending on a good note better than knowing a boundary? or am i seeing finding the boundary as not good note wrong?
Oh gosh were you in melbourne?!! Love seeing this shaping, would be great to book a session when you’re around 💖

Yes we were! Loved our visit
Hey I’m new I like you’re channel
what are you using as treats?
My macaw was punished with a spray bottle by her previous owner. She hates any water. Not to the point of destruction but she will try to get as far away from the shower spray bottle or whatever I am trying. She is also a plucker so I try this shampoo for pluckers to keep her skin healthy. Do I start with the same method here for getting her to enjoy bath time with this shampoo for pluckers?
Gotta try it out cuz my Greys really really dirty and definitely needs a bath , funnily enough my other parrots love baths
I really need to work on this with Cheeky, I get impatient and just go at her with the detachable shower head. 😬😳 She streamlines, but lets me do it. Not great for our relationship though, I'm sure. Btw I love your leggings Jamie, beautiful colour that matches your sweater! :)))
Hi, do all your videos work for all birds to teach them and train them? I have an Indian Ringneck. Thank you
Can you use any stick for the target training or is it made of a specific material? If so, where can you but it?
