The difference in the Dutch language with the Dutch and Belgians is comparable to British English and American English. The accents are different, and sometimes use different word choices.

Accents are for sure different, but especially amongst themselves they use much more french influenced words (Tas koffie instead of Kop koffie and sacoche instead of handtas for example). I would say the difference is bigger then your comparison. If, as a Dutch, you talk to them you can perfectly understand them since they will adept to a more former use of Dutch.

Boschenaren are far worse. ;) I have been know to sit at uncles birthday in Den Bosch, nodding yes and no and hoping I choose right. but the otherway around is the same. If I go full on Drents on them, they don't understand a thing.

This exactly! I went like, did he just say "just rocks" to a freaking hunebed? (burrial mount) Those were build between 3350 and 3050 BC and those "just rocks" that were used weigh on average 20000 kg with the largest being about 25000 kg. ( 44092 - 55115 lb) "just rocks" bah! *mutter mutter grumble grumble*

Carrots are usually white, because there is actually no need for the plant, or it's even waste, to produce any sort of pigment. I think carrots, or roots for that matter, would be purple or orange as a side effect of a colourful self-protection material (like carotene) and/or as for the cause of breeding.

Just like cale (boerenkool) originally it was puple but we made it green so there is more fotosynthese (glucose production) and therefore is grows faster and bigger. But because it grows faster is has less minerals then purple. Thats the down side of mass production

I got up at 3 hours past midnight to climb bromo before sunrise so i could see the sun rise. It was amazing, nothing grows there, i felt like i was on the moon. And the sunrise was incredible. But it was so cold at night on top of thd mountain! Never thought i would get cold in indonesia ;) I miss indonesia too. The food! Hope you enjoy your time abroad :)

There’s a university dedicated to this and students from all over the world come there to do their masters and bring back their knowledge home…great thing!

@@puciohenzap891 That stuff is banned in the EU. I think you are mistaken with the USA and Canada. They use insane amounts of that poison. But USA mega cooperations wanted to push their GMO crap into Europe. Also their Chlorine chicken and hormone filled meats washed in Ammonia and other poison that is banned in the EU.. So they came up with a treaty. I forget the name but after lots of protest it did not go thru. But most of those same mega corps also were in Canada so they tried again with CETA. And so far as i know they agreed to that in 2017. So maybe it has something to do with that. So that some company's found a way to ship in food from other countries give it a Dutch label and ship it to other country's. But our own farmers are insanely regulated. Don't know why anyone wants to be a farmer here anymore. But i'm glad we still have a lot of them. But a lot of them will be gone when the government gets their way. They are talking about taking their lands.

I love my western neighbours, try to visit at least once a year for a daytrip, because Groningen is just 2 h away. First thing I use to do, is hit the Febu snack shop, for some Frikandel and Bitterballen from a vending machine. Then for a smoke to one of the many Coffeeshops, and at last, getting some Vla, Stroopwafels and Chocomel for home.

Those stones are historical artifacts, they date back 5000 to 5500 years (maybe longer) and were build by using glacial rocks that ended up in the region some 150.000 years ago, they can be found in more places, Norther Europe and up to Denmark too i believe. (Hunebedden, or "Huns beds/Dolmen") There are several theories around them, they're burial mounts for kings or druids, or they are "mystical places" used by druids for ceremonies. It is also unclear who build these, and for that reason the meaning is unclear as well, much like other monolithic monuments left over from 5000 years ago, like Stonehenge, we have ideas what it was used for, but that's about it. (most likely it's that burial thing tho) Either way, it's pretty nice to have such old historical artifacts just laying around the landscape hehehe.

To answer your language question, flemish is a dialect of dutch. It’s the same language, they just use words we would otherwise would not and the other way around.

Flemmish and Dutch have exactly the same dictionary. When Flemmish speak the general Dutch they got a slightly french accent. Like the Dutch have a bit of an anglo-saxon accent. Dialects ofcourse exist, as everywhere in Europe, both in Belgium and The Netherlands.

For the Dutch language, there are two categories: Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands ("General Civilized Dutch") and Dialects. Dialects can differ from region to region, most of them are very close to ABN, some are so different that Dutch people from other parts can't understand it. Belgian, or actually Flemish, is considered a Dutch Dialect in that sense.

ABN hasn't been officially used since the 80's. These days the term is simply AN, Algemeen Nederlands or sometimes Standaard Nederlands.

@@mormacil They ARE Dutch sublanguages, but they're called regional languages (with the exception of Frisian, which is an official (minority) language). Lower Saxon and Limburgish are regional languages, just 1 step down to that of an official language. I don't know much about Lower Saxon, but being a Limburger myself I know that the reason why Limburgish is not an official language (in comparison to Frisian, which IS an official language in the Netherlands) is that Limburgish doesn't have an Algemeen Geschreven (general written) spelling. And about Afrikaans: it's an official language in South Africa and a minority language in a small part of Namibia, which derives from Middle Dutch just like modern Dutch (or Algemeen Nederlands).

@@peterkeijsers489 No it's not, they're all Netherlandic languages but so is Dutch. To avoid confusion we generally call the family Lower Franconian instead. Perhaps you're confusing the Limburgish dialect with the Limburgish language? Those are different things. The former obviously being part of Dutch as it's a dialect of it. The latter is it's own distinct language. It's as much part of the Dutch language as Low Dietsch is.

Also, I live near Giethoorn, all the villages with canals around here have roads. There's often building and greenery between the roads and canals, making it appear canals are much more prominent.

Flemish is to Dutch what the Australian accent is to English. They have a different accent and sometimes use words differently or totally different words for things, but it's just the same language. We both think the other sounds funny, but we're perfectly able to have a conversation without too much difficulty as long as we're both aware that certain words have a different meaning where the other is from.

About Dutch agriculture there is a good video called "How Does The Netherlands Feed The World".

Sorry guys, the islands in the north are not the Walden Islands but Wadden Islands. Wadden means mudflats. You can make special walks when the tide is low. But only with a guide, because when the tide rises, it goes really fast and you don't want to be there when that happens.

For agriculture, the netherlands produces a majority of the worlds tulips, and a large chunk of other cut flower exports. Even with the relative small amount of space, its always in the top 10 potato producers and exporters, being second in 2019 when looking at exports. In terms of exporting agricultural products, the Netherlands is only behind the USA despite having much less farm land.

A former President of the United States, Martin Van Buren, spoke Dutch as his first language.

1:56 the awnser on your question is i believe around 40% or something. Due to the whole western Netherlands (noord-holland, Zuid-Holland, zeeland and a piece of western utrecht is atleast 1 meter or more below sealevel. Same for the northen parts of groningen and friesland. Not to mention the entire province of flevoland is a drained sea so yea its a bunch of land.

Don't forget the Hamburg Ship port. Rotterdam had in 2018 transported 13,598 Containers (TEU) which places it in Europe number 1 However Hamburg is not far behind on 3rd place with 8,741 Containers in 2018. 2nd place is btw Antwerp with 10,830 Containers

@@coyotelong4349 There are actually three countries that get confused with each other: Switzerland, Sweden and sometimes Swaziland. I have no idea why, but it happens a lot. I used to travel a lot and it happened at least once per trip. Mostly in english speaking countries, especially in the US. I can only assume it is because of the Sw, but that's a guess only. It's kind of the same with Austria and Australia 😁

In Friesland, the province in the North, 190cm or 1m90 is actually a VERY common height. Most males reach that height around their puberty, I am 1m85 and living here has always made me feel small/average. My father is 1m91 and my younger cousins are all between 1m95 and 2m05

Original carrot colors range from a creamy white to a deep purple. Orange just sorta sits in the middle between them. At least here in the Netherlands you can still get other colored carrots but you're paying premium for their weirdness and they basically taste the same. There's more flavor variety within different breeds of orange carrots.

There is the Dutch language union. In it, are the Netherlands, Flanders and Surinam. That official committee decides what is "proper Dutch" (in grammar and writing). So, that way it is guaranteed that (in writing) Surinam Dutch, Dutch Dutch and Flemish Dutch will always be identical. The way Dutch is spoken is not prescribed. So Flemish Dutch, Dutch Dutch and Surinam Dutch are all considered to be "proper Dutch" nowadays. Having said that, there are huge differences. I have difficulty understanding people speaking their own Dutch even less than 100 km (60 miles) from where I was born and raised.

Clogs are actually quite practical when working in the garden. You leave them outside, but you can easily slip into them.

Rotterdam is called "the biggest German port". That says it all.

Dutch and flemish is near enough similar the g is more gutteral in the netherlands and the flemish avoid all words of french influence where as the dutch will use french influenced words. Best example is the word spindryer, in dutch its centrifuge (french influence), flemmish its droogzwierder, litteral translation dry slinger. As in it spinns an item till its dry. There are also some differences in expressions. After a meal in the netherlands you kan say "ik zit vol" translates to im stuffed. In belgium saying ik zit vol means im pregnant. This can lead to interesting situations at the dining table.

I recently flew over the Netherlands (slowly on 800m height, with a cessna) .. it is SOO flat - it's 80% farmland (lot of it apple, pear and other fruit trees as well) with small towns scattered about.

11:20 carrots back before we made them orange were actually purple. Tbh im glad its orange now since i cant imagine those things being purple.

Carrots used to be yellow. In German we sometimes still call them "gelbe Rüben" yellow turnip.

Even today you occasionally stumble upon a white or purple carrot when harvesting them. I did that kind of work in my teens in the summer.

Proto Carrots were many colors similar to peppers Yellow, Purple, White, and Orange. Many you can once again buy thanks to farmers markets and seed saving. The old school carrots are also much smaller, sweeter, and less woody as their easy to transport big Orange cousins.

Regarding the language. Yes, to a Dutch person the Belgian language sounds like a extremely similar accent. But for instance the words "poepen" and "foef" have unexpectedly completely different meanings.

Amsterdam however is one of the most cosmopolitan cities on the planet with official inhabitants from more then 188 Countries There are about a million Islamics in the Netherlands and also about a million Indonesians

Flemish is officially part of the Dutch language but its a very specific dialect, with its own pronunciations and in Flanders they use quite a few different words, mostly using french-derived alternatives or doing the opposite where they introduced germanic words to better differentiate themselves from the French speaking Walloons. When we have Dutch language quizes or games on TV there will often be Flemish people competing and they often do well because their education is more strict on things like spelling and grammar.

3:15 vlemish sounds like old Dutch. They have a few words they pronounce differently or have a different meaning. The biggest difference is the culture, even tho we're so close to eachother.

when you get klompen that fit perfectly they are extremely comfy but most people just think you buy them and than you are done no thats incorrect you have to shape them yourself or let someone do it for you to perficly fit your feet so the pressure of standing is spread evenly across the full foot

In the USA many towns have Dutch names. Also, you can find plenty of street names that have Dutch towns as their name like Amsterdam Street/Avenue. And I see plenty of names of people online or in movies/series that come from their Dutch ancestors. And we have more bikes than people in the Netherlands because biking here is faster and safe for everybody. If you come to the Netherlands and drive a car remember this rule. All DRIVERS coming from the right have the right of way and bikers are drivers too. (unless road signs claim differently but still do not a biker because you will still be at fault because a biker is a weaker road user and they need protection from cars so make sure you have a witness/dashcam)

@6:30 its funny only non dutch are concerned about that and if you look at the risk projections belgium has a bigger risk because we maintain and design our water management so fully, theres many places that due to being complacent are at way worse risk... in either case projected sea level rise is about 20cms over the course of a century.... its nothing to panic about

@2:00 about 35% and then another 15% is about at sea level or less then 1 meter above making it flood at tides and waves, but thats excluding flooding by river which dependent on snow melt in the alps might flood about 5-10% , do lets round it and say 60% in the worst case.. the most vulnerable sea flooding area is dike ring 14 (rotterdam amsterdam utrecht all being in that one) most common are river floods

Maybe you didn't know, but the Golden Earring (radar love), the Cats (one way wind) and George Baker (una paloma blanca, little green bag) are from the Netherlands too. And the Tulips are original not from Holland. The're from Turkeye. And our Sinterklaas is a Turkish bisshop too. But in the Netherlands we celebrate his birthday every year on the 5th of december. Some schoolteatcher in the 19th century thought it was fun to ad some helpers called zwarte (black) Piet. Now a days people are not amused by this helper beïng black. So now we have roetveeg pieten and stroopwafel pieten for example. I can't think of more right now. I love your video. I subscribed immediately.

It differs what they say how much of the Netherland is below sea level/would flood; from about 1/3 to close to 50%. All I know and actually care about is that I live in Limburg NL and the ice can melt, it will give us a beach, this part of South Limburg is relative safe, however we also have floods and they can be severe. Excess rainfall caused flooding in Belgium, Germany, and NL in July 2021.

Frisian is Dutch with a twist of old Germanic. So if you are from Sweden, well Frisian but also Dutch should not be very difficult to learn.

Funny thing is that purple and yellow carrots are actually also still sold in the netherlands at some of the bigger supermarket chains like Albert Heijn, so I'm surprised mist people don't know about their existence. The purple carrots are actually dark purple on the outside and fade into almost white towards the middle. It might have something to do with our agriculture ehh.. culture. We also have white asparagus for example that are a real delicacy here that is almost only grown locally I believe, and it is only available fresh when in season from march to June or something, and are quite different (way better imo) from green asparagus only because they are grown underground.

White asparagus is also popular in Germany. :) But yeah, carrots come in white, yellow, and purple, and now also orange. :)

Those "just rocks" are ancient burial sites, around 5000 years old. They are scattered among north east Netherlands.

the original colors of carrots are between a white/violet and dark purple color, some were also a light white/yellowish color.

Wild carrots are white and they come in many colors. The fruits and vegetables you see in your market varied greatly in size, shape, color and taste compared to their ancestors. For instance, apples were almost inedible just a century ago or so with 99% being made into apple cider (the kind with alcohol).

about the indonesian thing, there are loads of 'indo's' which means indonesian and Dutch mixed, these people might not look indonesian. Also, some ethnically dutch people might call themselves Indo, due to their family history in indonesia :)

The weird thing is Dutch is the tallest people and colonized Indonesia, the shortest country by the average at that time

oposite of what most foreigners think cloggs are very comfortable, especially in winter where they keep your feet nicely warm, i can't wear them anymore because of disability i can't hold the left one and it slips from my foot else i would wear them again for sure

Flemmish and Dutch are very very similar. When speaking ‘standard Flemmish’ or ‘standard Dutch’, we have no difficulty whatsoever to understand eachother. (This wil not be the case if people speak in dialects) To most Dutch people, Flemmish sounds really charming. Dutch sounds more harsh. Also Flemmish had some different words, sometimes they’re French loan words but sometimes the opposite happens. To avoid French words in the Flemmish language, they sometimes use Dutch words where the Dutch use a French loan word. Overall the languages are similar and the biggest difference is the accent.

Its not just rocks but menhirs big broken off blocks of stone that where mainly long and small.. And its really special because these were placed in a way to make a sort of tomb. These stones were placed around 3 to 4000 years BC and its not thinkable how they moved or lifted these stones because they weigh tons..

I live in the center of the Hague, a 10 minute walk from Parlement. And yes the Prime minister often comes to the square here on his bike for a beer and a chat with the locals. I have never seen any secret service nor Media .He genuinely seems to be on his own, and he's never been hurt. . I Don't like his politics, but admire his balls !. I have also seen the royal family do some 'shopping ' a few times, but they have a lot of protection. You can't walk up to the king and have a chat without being 'jumped' by men in dark suits 😉

Queen Maxima , King Willem Alexander are also bike riders . And no , clogs are not uncomfortable . They keep your feet dry and when it’s cold you put some hay in your clogs to keep your feet warm . About music , also André Rieu is famous around the world and is selling many , many cd’s !!

Carrots were originally dark purple and white. Through selective reproduction Dutch farmers mentioned to create orange carrots in the 17th century. Before then, orange carrots did not exist.

Fun fact, besides the invention of the compact cassette, another more current Dutch "export product" hails from there as well. @3:00 Flanders is south netherlands, Belgium is not a nation but a political unit set up without a base, you can also see this by provinces, theres one Duchy of Brabant, the south part is in 'belgium' the north part is in the Netherlands, or by name...Belgica meaning low lands in latin and refering to the same area, ie there is no linguistic distinction beyond dialect in the same way texans and new yorkers will speak different but both speak American english

I am from Southern Netherlands - (Province Zeeland) - to answer your question. For me, the Flemish is better understandable then the Northern provinces' dialect. It is pretty much the same for me, but in other parts of the country, they can sand steel with the way they prenounce the letter 'G' -- at least they don't have to scrape their troaths ever, perma-scraped.

Concerning how we see each other: As a German living but a 1h train ride from the border, I feel closer to the Dutch than I do to Bavarians, lol. In many regards, the country feels like ours but better. Not sure how the Dutch feel about this. But basically, I see anyone from the DACH region and the BeNeLux countries as variations on the same theme. But maybe that's just me and my pan-European brain.

I think in general, people are cool with Germany. I'm studying to become a German language teacher and a lot of people have told me they dislike German language (because of the 'harsh' sound and the difficult grammar), but I haven't heard many negative opinions on the country itself :) I personally like Germany because I've spent many holidays at the Mosel river :3

Living in the north of the netherlands i am cultrually much closer to the north gernans than i am to the south netherlands. Pass the river rhine and things become a little different. The romans stopped at the rhine and french influence was a lot bigger there too. I see a lot of similarities with the culture of northern germany and denmark Greetings!

From one pan-european brain to another😉; what's a border, really, these days? I used to live in Nijmegen and take my dog walking in Berg en Dal. There's a path there, forest left, a grass field right. No wire nothing. Path is NL, grass is DE. I like that. It should be like that everywhere and always.

My father's family came from Krefeld to Britain in the 19th century. We all sp-oke "German" at home as well as English. When I went to Germany in the 1970s with my husband, who had been in the British Army in Gottingen, I was told by his German friends that I was speaking Platt Deutsch, with the accent of the German /Belgian border area. .My father forgot how to speak English for the last t6 weeks of his life, and spoke Platt Deitsch instead. My own children spoke Platt Deitsch at home , but have now lost it as they were forced to learn French at school . My grand-children are going to learn Afrikaans at home in September, which according to your language expert , would be the easiest foreign language for English people to learn . The French do not even like us, so why learn their language ?

Actually if I remember correctly from my history lessons. The Netherlands didn’t fight against the Spanish monarch Karel V for 80 years since they had like a break for a few years. The war is in dutch called ‘de tachtigjarige oorlog’ meaning the 80 year war.

Thanks for making these. If you want to learn about Flemish - go over the Langfocus Channel and look up Flemish. Paul is really good at comparing similar languages. As an American who really cant do a lot of international travel, I look forward to learning about and hearing from normal everyday people who live in Sweden Germany or Indonesia, or wherever.

Both are official Dutch and you'll find all words used in both countries in the same book. We have way too many words that litterly mean the same thing, so the Belgians who speak dutch prefer another set of words mostly. There are also some habits that is clinging to old Dutch.

You clearly havent worn them,if you claim they are uncomfortable. A well cut wooden shoe is very comfortable and surprisingly warm. The isolate very well. I am not talking about the "yellow" ones. Even if they sold by size, those are defenatly not designed for wearing. They are machine made. A well crafted wooden shoe is carved by hand. It is realy a craftmanship (a traditional one) There is also a difference in the way they are cut depending if they are worn by men or women. The clogs you often see in souveneersshops are the men's. The womans version has a bigger step-in hole and a leather band to fix it to the womans foot.

Music is alot of POP but rather unknown to may Dutch we have a large Metal Scene. With bands like: The Gathering, Within Tempatation, Delain and Epica. Also our contribution to Nightwish; Floor Jansen who lives in Sweden with her husband Hannes VanDahl drummer for Sabaton.

There are about 500,000 Dutch people (first,second etc. generation) that have bonds with the former colony of Nederlands Indië. These people often have mixed Dutch and Indonesian forebearers but not nescessarily. They where repatriants and refugees from the colonial war after WWII when Indonesia became an independend nation and were always from origin Dutch. Then there is a group of 70.000 Molukkers, part of the KNIL (colonial army), that was brought to the Netherlands and after the independence of Indonesië could not go back savely. There are also Indonesian people living in the Netherlands as expats, or as political refugee.

They really should update this. I'll say it again, William of Orange (William the Silent) was not the first king. The Dutch were a republic for over two centuries after gaining independence from the Spanish Empire (sometime around 1600 de facto). The first king was effectively Lodewijk Napoleon (yes, that French guy's brother) in 1806 (nicknamed the lame king). A remote descendant of William the Silent became the official first king in 1814 (confusingly, he was also called William of Orange-Nassau) .

The carrots were white or even purple . I would say Flemish is Dutch with an accent just like here in Drenthe some of us speak Drents. This is the first video that I came accros that they say ''Gouda'' correct. In the music section they could mention Golden Earing , Radar love was very much listened to accros the world .
