That doesn't mean you dont give negative feedback when it is deserved. The greatest generations the Western world ever produced were not coddled.

I’m starting my first year as a special Ed teacher next semester. Affection and love does not come easily to me, giving or receiving, never has. I’m going to change that so my class can have me as a positive force in their lives. Even if its a “fake it til I make it” situation. Everyone deserves genuine positivity in their lives, especially kids with special needs.

What Chris Ullmer is doing here is brilliant. Children (and adults, for that matter) that know they are loved and respected by someone are more resilient in the face of negative events and setbacks - those "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" - that can come at them. Having a healthy love of self doesn't mean that they think they're good at everything. It only means that they are less vulnerable to bullying and abusive behavior. Those with a healthy love of self will take a stand, and not be sucked into toxic relationships as often.

As an educator myself, I use praise carefully. As Carol Dweck suggests that we should praise on the students’ efforts instead of their intelligence or abilities. That way, it opens up the possibility of a growth mindset as opposed to fixed mindset. Also, praises, preferably, should be private (personal to specific student as this video shows), specific (such as their efforts in reading, writing, etc.) and unconditional.

This is how white people teach their children, how to be leaders. They give them guidance, encouragement and boost their self-esteem. We need black teachers, principals, private schools, black school boards, black administrators, and black school districts to do this exclusively for OUR CHILDREN!

+Teodor Georgiev Yeah, not the exact opposite, as it doesnt show anything about hate in here, at least not directly. But it's certainly not showing that "love" is "natural" either.

I dont really doubt that a "positive attitude" towards those children tends to 'improve' their "results"(to put it simply). But it doesnt follow that "hate is a learned behaviour and love is natural". BOTH are learned, per haps "love" even more so. In a way that's kind of what the teacher showed here. He's teaching something here isnt he? I'm sure we can all agree it's not hate.

The greatest generations the Western world ever produced were not coddled or lied to when they did a bad job. We are simply not raising children to compete in a tough world. Im sorry but everyone knows that. Especially China. If you want to raise a child who is not fragile then teach them personal responsibility from a young age. Teach them that the world is not fair and it is not because they are a victim. Be better than the next but also be seriously humble, respectful, and smile a lot. It works wonders.

Now look, this is good and all. But this does not mean that love is natural and hate is learned. Neither that hate is natural and love is learned. Both are learned. The great thing here is that the teacher is choosing to teach love, and the consequences are awesome. Great! But no need for this Rousseau-level BS :)

This is a good idea, but praising students who maybe haven't earned it can end up teaching them laziness and ultra-sensitivity because they have never had to work for praise before, which can ruin their adult lives. There's nothing wrong with giving praise, but say there is an extremely intelligent student who doesn't work hard at all, praise doesn't help them, they need to be told to get off their butts and get to work. Yes, I get that it is a special needs class, but it definitely shouldn't be taken to general classes.

***** I agree... there needs to be a balance. Millennials these days tend to be extra-sensitive and they just need to grow up... and this is coming from one of their peers.
