Teach Your Dog to Wait for His Food

Patience is a virtue.
Self control doesn't come naturally to dogs. We need to teach them how to wait politely. One of the first things I teach dogs that come through our house is to wait nicely. Wait for me to put their food bowl down, wait to go out the door, wait to jump into the car, wait to exit their crate, wait at a curb...you get the picture.
I like to teach dogs to wait at the food bowl first. Most dogs are quite interested in their meals and are quite invested in learning how to get to their meal in the fastest manner. Here's how I do it.

I used the tips in this video to teach my dog to wait for his food. He caught on in only one training session. I tell him "wait," put the bowl of food down, and then he has to wait until I say "okay" before he can eat. He never goes for it until I say he can. :) Thanks so much!

Very helpful video, thank you. I have adopted a four year old dog who is a border collie, lab, huntaway mix, very gentle, patient, intelligent and obedient. He is highly food driven, and I am not sure how he was fed in his old home, but he absolutely tries to dive into the food bowl! I am teaching him wait in all situations at the moment, and I searched for this topic. I like how you train, and I sense your incredible love for dogs. ❤️ 👐🏿 😊 I have had various dogs over the last 28 years, and he's one amazing boy. 😊

Hello, my dog does wait and will not eat until I say so, but she is growling (not very aggressive, just sound , no teeth) when I look at her waiting. Basically I put the food in the bowl on the floor, she sits and waits , but quickly starts to growl (and drool). Should I wait for her to stop before giving the que to eat, or should I let her eat quickly before she starts the growling?

Will this work on a 9 week old puppy? He can’t focus long enough to wait for his food, I’ll have the bowl and if he doesn’t get his food right he’ll run off

I'd LOVE if you could add when you would add the cue "Wait". I share your video for my dog training students and always get the question "when do I say Wait?" I think this would be a good little addition at the end for beginners. Very nice work, Levi ;) -M.McCue-McGrath, CPDT-KA

After watching her other videos, the answer would be to add the "wait" command after the dog stops going for it then do clicker...repeat a few more times until you can bet the dog won't go for it then say "release" and he can eat, should be it.'

Yes, I agree, I think she forgot to add that step in this particular video, because I noticed this is the only one like that.
