Teac A-4010GSL Belt Replacement and Repair

After the replacement of the belt, I started adjusting the pinch roller tension. However, I broke the tension arm while trying to tighten up the shaft nut. At that time, I almost gave up on the repair. Finally, I found a solution which works out fine. This is the video for the entire repair work.

I've always found it easier to replace the drive belt on these old Teacs by removing the capstan flywheel thrust plate from the rear of the deck and sliding the belt up through the gap. Saves you from having to remove the entire head and drive assembly.

Thank you for sharing your experiences for dealing with A-4010 belt replacement. I also try to find the best way to do the repair. If there is a way to save time and labor, I will go for it and share with other DIY fans too.

When I was doing the year Maintenace on Teac 3300-10 I was checking how to put on the belt when it is time. Thanks for your advice. Oh, is it easy to replace the counter belt when it is time to?

When you put the belt on that way you are risking getting oil and grease all over it the proper way is to remove the entire assembly from the unit tilting it down towards you and putting the belt around the flywheel then holding the belt tight with one of your fingers and then tilting the assembly back the way it was and then screwing it back together great end result all the best be safe just another way to get the same outcome

You missed some steps .You took 4 screws on back, swung around to front view and the plate was off. What goes?

Were you(him) really able to get behind that capstan assembly to change belts by removing only those two screws shown in the video?

Actually, the capstan base is hold in place by four (4) screws and needs to be removed from backside of face panel. The belt replacement can be done with the the way I did as in the video but it needs some efforts. Because the head assembly is also mounted on the same base, in order to keep both assemblies intact, I needed to lift up the assemblies and slide the belt behind the flywheel. The best way I suggest is to remove the three (3) screws from top which holding the head base assembly as shown in fig. 3-4 on page 11 in Service Manual. This way you can gain access to replace the belt. Here is the link for manual: www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/teac/a-4010gsl.shtml

whats the difference between the GSL and the SL?

  • @VintageAudioFan

    @VintageAudioFan

    4 жыл бұрын

The difference - The 4010 SL (71-72) were replaced by the A-4010GSL in 1973 with a swap of the Permalloy heads for entirely new HD Ferrite heads (but a permalloy core) and the replacement of the 1/2mil button by a "rec pause" function. You can check out the article at following website: www.thevintageknob.org/teac-A-4010SL.html

Very nice video. I have a Teac a-2300 and it seems my counter belt is slipping. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. It works perfect when I do fast forward and fast reverse, but during normal play, it is intermittent. I can see the belt through the right real cavity and move it with a small stick and it does seem rather flexible or stretched. It looks like your counter is in the same location as mine. After exhausting several ways, it looks like I may be forced to remove the front panel to get out the belt. Would you agree?

Vintage Audio Fan I’m sure it hasn’t. When I look at it through the right real plate removed, it has a white look to it like old rubber, and when I move it up and down with a long thin stick I can see it flexes quite a bit. I can see it slipping on the take up real pulley. I bought it from a guy who said his dad had it stored in his closet for about three years. I replaced the captain belt when I first got it but the counter was working so I left it alone. But now through use, it has decided to stretch and work only intermittently.

@@alcameron6071 It is due for a replacement. It needs tightness on belt but not loose in order to drive the pulley of time counter.

Vintage Audio Fan Yes, I realize this. My question is, I can’t seem to find an easy way to access the belt without possibly having to remove the front face plate, which I hope is not the case. Do you happen to know the sequence of getting to the belt to replace it? This is my dilemma.

There are some scenarios may cause the problem you mentioned: (1) The pinch roller bearing got heavy gummy grease causing the assembly can't slide off the shaft and kick out. (2) The pinch roller solenoid is defective caused by the bad relay or control circuit. I suggest using a heat gun to heat up the bearing assembly. Once the grease melt, then wiggle the whole pinch roller assembly and make sure the arm is moving freely. If this step is not working, then you need to check the components (i.e. relay....) on the control PCB where the circuit is for the pinch roller solenoid operation.

@@VintageAudioFan Thanks for reply. when start up: if I move the wheeler all the way down and press play, then the selenoid was move all the way in and the arm pull the wheel roller up (for touching the capstan motor to turn), but when I press stop, the selenoid is just move out little bit (enough for the wheel is not touching capstan motor for turning, but not all the way down!), so do you think selenoid problem all the bearing assembly problem? Thanks

Yes. You need to perform the pinch roller pressure adjustment in order to have correct contact pressure between wheel and capstan shaft. Please refer chapter 5 "Measurement and Adjustment - Mechanical" shown in the service manual. Here is the link for service manual: www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/teac/a-4010gsl.shtml
