Te Maurea Whiritoi 2023
Ойын-сауық
Kapa haka performance of Te Maurea Whiritoi from the regional competition at the Ngaa Paki o Matariki Festival at Claudelands Arena in 2023, where the team placed first for the first time in their history.
Waiata Tira - Te Puaaingo (0:00)
This waiata tira narrates a tale of triumph amidst adversity. Through this waiata, our aim is to inspire our rangatahi to have unwavering self-belief, cultivate resilience, and liberate their minds from the burdens of the present. By doing so, their spirits can soar freely, enabling them to pursue their aspirations and dreams for tomorrow.
Whakaeke - Ngā Paki o Matariki (3:25)
This whakaeke recognises the overarching kaupapa of this event, Ngaa Paki o Matariki. During the time of Matariki, our ancestors would carefully observe the stars to determine the most effective approach for tending to the gardens in the new year. Through the use of diverse metaphors, we honour the profound connection between these concepts and the gathering of the Tainui waka here today at Te Papanui.
Whaikōrero (5:58)
A speech to remember those who have passed, acknowledge the Kīngitanga, pay tribute to those in attendance and introduce the next item.
Waiata Tawhito - Te Ao Mārama (8:09)
Te Ao Mārama is the name of the marae ā-kura situated at Hamilton Girls' High School. Over the years, the stories and significance behind these carvings have not been widely taught or known. Therefore, this pātere was composed to safeguard that knowledge and pay homage to influential wahine rangatira.
Poi - Ira Ngā Rangi (10:56)
Firstly, this poi pays homage to three pivotal figures at the forefront of the revitalisation of taonga pūoro: Hirini Melbourne, Rangiiria Hedley and Hinewirangi Morgan. Secondly, with a tinge of regret, the composer reflects on their own experiences and skills in taonga pūoro, lamenting the absence of substantial contributions to recent revitalisation endeavours. With this song, the composer hopes to inspire the next generation to pursue the realm of taonga pūoro.
Waiata ā-ringa - Iho o te Tupurangaroa (15:35)
This waiata ā-ringa delves deeply into the metaphors and underlying values embedded within the name of the kapa. At its essence, Te Maurea Whiritoi embodies the core values of growth, unity, and a visionary outlook for the future. These values are fostered through a belief in a higher purpose and a commitment to honouring the unique identity inherent in each individual. It is our collective responsibility to foster and nurture these distinct identities, ensuring that we all reach our fullest potential. This pursuit forms the fundamental goal, the fundamental value, the fundamental identity of Te Maurea Whiritoi. It is a symbol of sustained growth, an enduring identity, and a perpetual commitment to shaping a thriving future.
Haka - Te Iro Kairoro (18:37)
People of all ages, without realising it, often find themselves controlled by corporate interests seeking profits through extensive social media usage. Frequently, individuals become immobile in unproductive tasks due to their addiction to electronic devices. Moreover, anxiety and depression caused by social media deeply affect our families, creating destructive outcomes. This haka serves as a call to regain sovereignty over our own lives. Resist the destructive influence of social media, which consumes our thoughts. Embrace and preserve your individual dignity and independence.
Whakawātea - Tai Aroha (21:42)
Firstly, this whakawātea serves as a homage to Keaton Reti, our dearly departed brother who tragically left us earlier this year. He was a remarkable individual, filled with determination, perseverance, and courage, who served as an inspiration to his friends. Through this tribute, we grieve his loss while embodying his uplifting characteristics, contemplating our own fleeting existence in this world.
The haka composed by Pānia Papa further emphasises the concept, reminding our rangatahi of their unique and significant role in this world.

When I first went to New Zealand I expected pristine nature, clean cities and all. But I was amazed at how polite, welcoming and kind-hearted Kiwis are! I hope to go back there in the near future!! Cheers from Brazil 🇧🇷

This isn’t my culture, but wow…just wow. This is so beautiful, and no matter how many times I listen I get goosebumps
I love this kapa. My fav for sure. All the items had so much emotions in them. My favourite item was the haka for sure. Specially when the kaitataki screeched his lines. Really emphasised the haka. 🔥🔥🔥

it's genuinely so beautiful to see an indigenous culture being preserved and celebrated despite the efforts of colonization
I really love the haka and how they talk about Taha Hinengaro and how social media is bad for you and i really hope i get into Te Maurea Whiritoi if i get into Hamilton Girls High
im samoan but always have a soft spot for kapa haka, the body movements combined with the singing just sends me into the ancestral plane xx
I don’t understand the language but I truly feels the last song, the movement, the melody, and everything. It touches my heart and all of sudden my tears dropped. Congratulations for the first place! ❤️

Damn that’s such a piercing performance. The emotions, spirituality, beautiful music and voices and homage at the end has smth really special about it, is so light and cheerful really celebrating the life of this boy. Melancholy is also there i fell every part of grief. Amazing
Great performance ! I love this team ; follow you since many years. From French woman in Switzerland.
The most inspiring and beautiful thing I've ever seen. I'm at a loss for words. Have been watching so many videos. It's so richly beautiful and deeply connected. It makes me wish i was part of a culture with such deep roots as this. It's so beautiful and you can feel ever vibe/energy. See the cultural connection embedded deep into their souls. To be apart of something like that... is beyond words. Have nothing but love and appreciation.
Absolutely ataahua! When you get those tingles all over, almost like goose bumps, it's the wairua felt through your waiata and haka and it makes us feel soo proud be Maori and the connection felt is magical ❤

Thank you so much for the positive vibes, aroha nui ki a koe!

They just preformed at my school today and it was Amazing it was such a blessing to be the first elementary school they ever preformed for it was once in a life time experience it was very sad to see them go I loved watching it, it was so amazing that I can’t even describe! They can project their voices so loudly in a open space and that’s hard to do and they’re facial expressions are just amazing!! Along with the vocals, I would’ve gone up for Poi ball but I arm is currently broken so I wasn’t able to, they’re super kind though I wish I could watch it again but I sadly can’t as they shave to head back home but Thank you for making my last Elementary year the best school year ever!!!
