Te Araroa. Day 89-Slaty Hut to Rintoul Hut

Day 5 of the Richmond section. This is the day that the Te Araroa trail notes claims is the most difficult day of the TA. The day we climb over the Rintouls.

That schist and scree can be treacherous. "Slow but steady" ... Great work! Well done!

This video! Wow! I think I twisted my ankle a few hundred times just watching you traverse the rocks and slate and you did an amazing job!! 💪

😂 Richie and I both agreed that on days like that, we were more mentally tired at the end than physically because of having to be so focussed on foot placement.

That wind will strip moisture out of you. Stunning views. I love harsh landscapes. Thanks for the vicarious hiking. 🙌

Yep. The wind takes it out of me just about as much as the sun. But humidity…that’s the real dehydrater!

Well done guys and I continue to enjoy your videos. Small correction; highest point of TA is Stag Saddle in the section to Tekapo. We are holidaying in Southland ATM and had a decent amount of rain overnight to replenish the water in the mud holes of the Longwood forest in anticipation of your arrival. 😜. Go well and enjoy.

Awesome achievement guys. Great video, showed just how technical it is in places. Looking at the climb in elevation it seemed easier than Tongariro ?

We both felt the climb up Tongariro was pretty easy comparatively. But I would say going up Rintoul didn’t feel that tough either. Tararuas was a different story!

Yikes those shingles looked scary to walk up and more so down What a breath taking view,The creator surely gave us a paradise. How were the mice in the hut lol..

You know, people talked often about the mice and rats at the huts, but I only saw one and he was busy scurrying out the door when we arrived. Barb had one run over her face one night. I had a rat eat through my food bag at a campsite, but that was my fault for not hanging it. But the time we all hit the SI huts, everyone hung their bags, whether there were mice stories or not.

@freedom_on_the_trail +Lol you definitely don't forget such things lol. Where I live we've big water rats I use to have them under the floor boards of my boat with is on land and you'd be in the Gully cooking or having a coffee and the Rats would actually make the floorboards jump. I took a few boards out redid it all and so far no more issues but you see them around, Funnest I was swimming in the nearby lake and as I was walking out a huge water rat leaves the water to lol.
