When I was much younger we managed 3 full campaign games of Empires in Arms over a 3 year period. Utterly fantastic "Diplomacy on steroids" type game but a massive commitment for 7 people.... Don't think I'll get back to that until I retire. Also hearing really good things about the new Hexasim Last Eagles games for the Grognards out there

It's a good game which deserves a 2nd edition. A lot has happened with gaming since the 80's so I firmly believe that there is much to do with the rules (not to mention the artwork).

Can’t believe not a single one of the incomparable grand tactical La Bataille series is here. I’m playing La Bataille d'Auerstædt with my 9 year old and we love it. Really captures the feel of tactics in this era. Try it! There’s a reason it’s still around for over 40 years.

You failed to mention two of the best: #2. Napolen at War, SPI (1975) - a simple yet superb quad-game that really conveys the feel of the battles as described by participants and (better) historians. #1. Napoleon's Last Battles - Designer's Edition, SPI 1976, with the Command Magazine counter variants (more "historical" less "balanced/gamey") - a masterpiece of elegant simplicity, where timing, use of terrain and allocation of forces is critical! It's a truly fabulous game - especially with the aforementioned counter variants! It was great to see Napoleon from Columbia Games! Still have my original 1972 copy! Still love it! Did not care for CnC Napoleonics - too many historical inaccuracies derived from regurgitated hearsay and lack of research. Sold it within a week.

Okay, so what is your opinion of Avalon Hill's Empire In Arms? This is my favorite Napoleonic war game. I know it is a long game and requires much book keeping. However, I love the victory point bidding system and the need to acquire victory points to stay dominant. This system allows any of the seven player powers to win the game. Another major plus, for me, is the tactical chit selection system. With superior chit selection, a disadvantaged army has a chance to defeat a more powerful one. And if the optional rules for naval battles are used, these become more engaging. I think the game allows for great replayability. Although the time to set-up and extreme length of the game are major negatives for most gamers. I'd like to know your opinion.

Hey Cody, Can't give you any shit about your list... not the biggest Napoleonic fanboy. That being said, I have AH's Waterloo (old Coffin box game, back in the day... pre-1970's), AH also put out (to my knowledge) the first block game called Napoleon back in the day. I DO own Field Commander Napoleon by DVG... one of the most beautifully produced game ever! Really love the mechanics. Was overjoyed to hear that you put up C&C's Napoleonic... when I went into Ancients, I bought ALL the expansions... and it's only the $350.00 price tag that has kept me from already owning all that. MAYBE it's the whole "column" thing, and all that marching about ("Prussia's Glory" and "Frederick the Great" had a lot of the same thing), that slows me down. ** Would love for you to do a TOP TEN GAMES on "forgotten wars"... @@TheDiscriminatingGamer War and Peace covered most of the Napoleonic period that you could either play scenarios of the actual battles with what ifs or as a Grand Campaign from 1805-15. Rules were simple to follow and the hexagonal map was like the 3rd Reich Map. Best to play 2 player but possible to play with 6 players. Good Solitare game that I took with me to South Korea. I even used the different coloured counters in the MERP system to represent Angmar-Rhudaur-Cardolan-Arthedain & Lindon. Wooden Ships allowed for ship to ship battles from the American revolution to the Napoleonic Era that allowed a degree of realism which was hard to find in a Naval battle games for the time. I have similiar one for the Civil War period called IronClads. Another one I have is War of !812 by Columbia Games with the Blocks which is a quick enjoyable 2 player game. While not a board game but a series of Computer games. Hpssims (John Tiller Games) does a lot of turn based Napoleonic-Civil War ect games that give the feel of a board game.

War & Peace was pretty easy, but it is now out of print. Field Commander Napoleon is not difficult, but there is a lot to keep track of. Napoleon Returns 1806 is pretty light. The Waterloo Campaign is easy to learn, as is C&C Napoleonics. You might also want to check out Napoleon 1806, which I just recently played, as it is fairly accessible as well.

Nepoleons triumph is my all time favourite but I can see why it's limited as it only focuses on the 1805 battle of austerlitz, you can command entire corps and the fog of war effect as they are blocks and no cards or dice, I admit I like these features but not having them in this game and that it works is truly unique

I managed to get a copy of C&C Napoleonics, just trying to find the expansions at sensible prices and in stock is a bit annoying. I still have to play it as the last year and a bit has somewhat hindered my gaming. I also backed Coalitions after watching your review, so I am looking forward to that when it’s printed. Have you tried the card game Eagles? I was introduced to it back in the late 90’s. Love the card randomness of the cards and how to play the hand and armies you have. Along with the dice rolling and my luck it can lead to fun and frustration. An eight hit low morale unit surviving every hit only to hold the elite British guards at bay is still a highlight. Along with an interesting campaign mode. It is a great card game.
