Hey Cody! Just wanted to share I've been a subscriber to your channel for a little while now and actually found it through your DC deck building game reviews. I don't get to play board games as often as I would like with family/friends. But I've shown them the DC deck building game as that's my favorite board game and they all loved it (they are non-gamers). So I love teaching that game. Just wanted to say this was a great list as we also love Horrrified and I got my Father in law hooked on Ticket to Ride. I always appreciate your insight with these top 10 videos and the DC deck building game reviews. Thanks for all you do for the board game community and I always love your jokes! Haha amazing work bro keep up the great content please! 👊

Space Marine Adventures: Labyrinth of the Necrons and Space Hulk are a really underrated gateway game to the Warhammer 40k universe of wargaming.

Memoir 44 is a lot of fun. Friend of mine has many of the expansions, I've been enjoying the Desert War expansion for it. Many tales of ridiculous last stands and clutch card draws. The Airstrike card has caused many such events.

From Memoir 44 onwards, I'd say the games on this list become too complicated for the average non-gamer to be used as gateway games. Of course, there *are* those people for whom you can give them something to really sink their teeth into (and who appreciate the mental exercise of thinking strategically), but a lot of non-gamers are that way because initially they can only deal with a mechanism or concept or two in any game. Anything more is like quantum physics to them. No matter how good I think Horrified is, if someone only has experience of games like Uno or Monopoly, rattling off a list of actions your character can take and talking about the various ways you defeat monsters, how to save villagers, and describing the multiple ways to lose the game is just not going to work so well. Ticket to ride works as a gateway game because you pretty much only do one of two things on your turn, pick up a card/cards or put down tracks/trains. I'm saying this because I've seen many examples of non-gamers thrown in at the deep end and gamers frustrated that their non-gamer friends don't see how wonderful the hobby is.

My favorite ten gateway games, all of which can be taught in three to seven minutes. Many on your list require longer teaching times and I would consider them beyond gateway, more like next level intermediate games. Carcassonne Catan Dixit Forbidden Island King of Tokyo Love Letter Patchwork Stone Age Ticket to Ride Tsuro These are the games I tend to show newer boardgamers, who might only be familiar with parlor games like Monopoly, Clue, or Risk (or even those with a Backgammon, Checkers, Chess, Cribbage, Euchre, or Hearts background), when they stop in at Lake Geneva Games.

Really versatile list - I like it! Lots I haven’t played either. I’m really looking forward to trying Zombicide! I actually recommended Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion for new(ish) players. Actually quite heavy but it was my first modern board game!

Next year is the 20th anniversary of the release of Memoir 44. Have you heard if Days of Wonder is going to do a nice version for it?

Tiny Towns is great. Even my six year old nephew can play it and do decently well, so grown ups should certainly be able to handle it. Some other good intro ones: Tokaido (a light set building game), The Captain is Dead (kind of like Pandemic but on a space ship), and Roll through the Ages (a roll and write but with a theme people seem to get easily).

I can't get our friends to try but agree with space base and TTR. Also Marvel United, Cascadia, Ready Set, Bet, and Foundations of Rome depending on audience.

Great choice of gateway games. I have many of those. Have you heard of the new Horrified coming out in October? It has a Greek Monsters theme.

Yes. Looking forward to it. If I'm honest, I think Horrified American Monsters is superior to the original in that the mini-games are much better. But I love the original's theme and the Universal Monsters.

Yes, they do get more creative in American Monsters. I enjoy both, and I wish they had an easy way to make expansions to the first two games, but they're pretty insulated. I hope this new Greek Monsters (and potentially future titles) further explore new kinds of mini-puzzles, and keep expanding on the game's system.
