TD50k Vs TD50KV

I’ve gotten several requests to do a video breaking down the pro and cons of buying a TD50k or KV. There are people that have enough money to buy either, but are on the fence if the KV version really offers enough to justify the added expense. It’s a good question, and that’s what we are going to tackle today.
Let's break down the differences. The TD50KV has a better, cooler looking drum rack (both can accommodate a 22” kick drum btw) the cabling is clear so it blends in better. It has a Cy14 and Cy15 that are both larger than the crash cymbals on the TD50k. You can Feel that difference by the way, it’s noticeable. The tom pads are the flagship version that have interchangeable shell wraps. The top tom IS the same size as the TD50k actually, but the floor toms are 12”. Many people were not happen when Roland took away the second hi-tom, and I’m one of them. The set costs more and has one less tom than the TD30 line, but it is what it is I guess. The last difference is the Kick pad. They both feel good. But the KD140 feel INCREDIBLE. Hands down the best classic electronic kick pad there is. It feels like a piece of granite.
But when you sit down to play both drumsets, do you suddenly come into harmony with drumming force? Or is the difference pretty minor? This is the part of the video where opinion comes in. I personally played the TD50k like 5 times before I could get my hands on a TD50kv. I was blown away by the TD50k because of the great ride and snare. The module is good too. But because the Ride and Snare are the same on the KV version, when I finally got to play it, I wasn’t overcome by a sense of euphoria or anything. It’s a great drumset, feel incredible, sounds great. But if you want to get the best bang for your buck, the TD50k will get you 90% of the way there. It’s not as big, and it doesn’t look as cool, but the experience is close enough for me. Of course the TD50kv is better in every way, but If it was my money, I’d just buy the K version and upgrade the heck out of it.

Hay Justin I love your channel! I’m a guitar player who has always wanted an electronic kit to learn and jam with people in my studio. I have been waiting for a deal for sometime and finally one came along. I bought a td 50k yesterday for 2000 dollars. With a snare stand high hat stand and double pedal. Had to drive 3.5 hours both ways to get it and get back home but MAN is this thing sweet. If I hadn’t seen your videos I would have never know this guy miss listed this kit as a Roland TD 30 when it was really a TD50k. Thanks my friend for all you do!

I did something a bit different with my Roland purchase. I already had a Gibraltar rack I wanted to use and I also wanted to use the KDA22 bass drum, so did not need rack or bass drum pad. I purchased to TD50DP, which of course got the module, snare and ride, purchased the KDA22 for 22 inch bass drum, then purchased tom pads and cymbals and kept my cost down to around the TD50K with the bigger tom pads and cymbals that would come with the TD50KV.

I've been considering the TD-50 upgrade with the module/snare/ride option after watching your review. After all, these are the foundation pieces (minus the hi hat) that make up the kit. Now just to get that bonus you mentioned! Haha. Thanks for all you do on this channel Justin!

Thanks for the great video. Very informative. I played acoustic all my life. I had one of the original Ludwig Clear Vistalite Octaplus sets back in the '70s and '80s with 8 melodic toms, two-floor toms, double 24" bass drums, and a full complement of tasty Zildjians along with full road cases for everything. That set was a lot of fun. (until it came to moving it! LOL!) I've also had a few Roland sets through the years that I really liked a lot. Then, about a year ago I bought the TD50k. I came to the same conclusion that the added value for the higher price just wasn't really there between the k and the kv. I'm very happy with my set. I may do some upgrades in the future but I'm happy with it the way it is. I am using a double bass pedal setup and it works great. Very happy with the TD50k.

Love your videos!!!!! New to the channel but definitely a long time fan now but I had a question....Wats the best edrum set right now? I know it's different "interest" and "preferences" that one can go by but in your professional opinon, which is best? I like the Roland td30kv because of it looks like a acustic drum set (which is where I'm coming from) but don't really know if it's better then the td50(k/kv) just because it's newer, also what's the difference between the td 30/50k and the 30/50kv?

I'm a recent convert to the TD-50K. I added an extra CY5 for a splash cymbal and an extra tom from the TD-50KV range. Gotta say...it's an awesome kit. The Hats...I'm getting used to the 50K version Hats but...they're still not there compared to acoustic Hats, unlike the snare drum which is the most beautiful feel of any electronic snare. I have three beautiful acoustic snares, a Tama Bellbrass, Pearl Brass Free Floater and a 1924 Leedy but...I love this baby!

TD50K just came in. So glad this video came out, but unfortunately I watched it after I ordered. This confirms for me, though, that the 50K is probably right for me and the 50KV would've been overkill. Haven't had enough time with it to leave a full review, but tried out a bunch of electronic kits from my local music store, and the TD-50 definitely felt the most natural to me. I prefer it's hi-hat, snare and ride response to the TD-30 and Alesis Strike Pro.

That was my problem with the alesis strike kick drum WAY too light. That's why the day I got my kit I went to Walmart and got those 20lb ankle weights that you use for intense workouts. Laced them together and draped it over the top of the drum. It is like hitting the bank vault now.

Honestly Ive played the TD50. It was the standard without the gigantor bass drum. I really wasn't all that impressed. Not bad but not game changing for me. I think it takes a very very nuanced drummer to appreciate the subtleties of what the 50 has to offer. I have played the 30 many times and I really really enjoy that set. In fact if I had the 30 I really wouldn't feel like I missed out at all.

I own the TV 50. There is an almost endless number of tweaks that can be applied to the various pads. These tiny adjustments can make major differences in the sound you get out of this module. I would almost say infinity is the number that you can put on the adjustments. There's nothing else like it.

Got the TD-50KV. Had to download expressions to not shoot someone. Love them now but I can’t believe the snares can’t be turned off on any of the snares that come in the TD50. You also can’t program a foot switch to control the snare strainers (Roland never has). The lack of ability to use the metronome efficiently is also ridiculous at this price point. A drummer with a influential voice needs to hang out at Roland for the TD-100 in 2020

  • @RaymondToms

Foot switch for the strainer? Never Has - wrong. Both the TD20 and TD30 could do this. Don't know why they stopped that option on later kits VS some of the options you can use.

legitMASKA well people are buying 7500 dollar kits so why wouldn't Roland keep making them? You have to understand supply and demand. Sure, if nobody was buying the expensive kits, Roland would decrease their price in order to make profit. Problem is, people still buy then because they're so good and you can't get better kits. So Roland keeps making them and they have a good reason why. These kits are not really for home practice use and more for professional use. If you can't afford their top end kit, your complaints don't matter. Nobody goes to the Lamborghini dealership to complain about their prices.
