Watch this fun red carpet interview with Ruta Lee (Witness for the Prosecution) describing Billy Wilder’s directing style in her stunning red dress (by Erin Pennacchio) at the 2018 TCM Classic Film Festival Opening Night. Ruta does an impression of Billy Wilder, and cheers his classic film “Some Like It Hot” starring Marily Monroe. The event celebrated the 50th Anniversary of “The Producers” (1968) at the TCL Chinese Theatre. I met Billy Wilder once when interviewing Walter Matthau. He stopped by our table at Universal where we were having lunch and said a few words. He then turned to Matthau and said `She has Marilyn`s smile`.Wilder was a 19th c Austrian Jew although he was of course born in the 20th c but his mentality was pure 19th c. When he met me, there was something about the look he gave me. Jews used to call it being greeted by a Landsman. And this is what it was. Like recognizes Like. Does not happen anymore even amongst Jews. Maybe occasionally but not alot. But with Billy I experienced it!

Billy did not like you to imitate his accent. Streisand did it at a dinner party and was told off by Wilder.
