This is EXACTLY the reason I love Tchaikovsky. This is more than music. It’s the power and majesty of unspoiled, unadulterated beauty in all its ways and its elements. Yes, that’s what this is! And Petrenko handles it so carefully and respectfully, as it should.

Ron Johnson, you are correct on all counts. This is definitely more than music. It is pure beauty! And you are correct; Petrenko was superb.

Petrenko is a conductor who knows where to lead his accomplished musicians. And us too. Magnificent performance. Bravo!!

Petrenko takes us on an amazing journey. That Russian sound is just beautiful

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 has often been referred to as the "work-horse of the symphonics." And for good reason. No better tribute could be paid to the genius of Tchaikovsky and this incredible work!

'They' call the music 'boring'... -Say hello to my norwegian axe. I must admit the seats are not the greates, most comfortablet but if I could, I'd be there. Damn Russia is hardcore.

The more I see of this conductor the more I like him.

The second movement is spot on. Nailed the 2nd movement, nailed the whole piece.

After 5 years I found this video and must write how much I like the way Mr. Petrenko leads the ensemble. It is marvelous, great, beautiful! Thank you, Maestro.

25:13 - 26:31 is just so sad and beautiful to me. You can feel the angst and the longing and the frustration in your soul; it’s like unrequited love in music form.

This symphony gives me chills every time I listen to it. The most perfect symphony ever composed. Love it.

Agreed. Outstanding. The tension and the long lines are evident from the first bars and continue throughout.

Tchaikovsky the great, inmortal with all the música created for him always alive.

I remember my parents used to listen to the Herbert von Karajan recording of this beautiful symphony when I was a child. I absolutely love it.

I can't remember how many times I have listened to Tchaikovsky's 5th in the last 40 years but it always gives me the goosebumps as if I am listening to it for the first time, just as in most other works of Tchaikovsky. Starting at 7:37 the lead-up to climax at 9:04 is so mesmerizing and powerful that no other music from any composer could even come close to it. Consider Tchaikovsky's 4th the man's struggle against fate where the man still has hopes and dreams. The 5th continues along man's struggles against fate while his hopes begin to dim and forces of fate grow more overwhelming with man questioning his fate. The 6th is when man recognizes that his fate is sealed so he just gives up and accepts it.

Your words are very good. Thank you . (I have found it interesting lately to reverse the 3rd and 4th movements in the 6th Symphony. I like the power of it to be in the finish.) ( -Just relistened to a 2013 FRSO 4th movement here on KZread. It is such a Finale movement. And that perfect punctuation at the end that speaks complete confidence.-)

Yes, but there's something about the end of the fifth, the part after the gloomy brass chords, that suggests there is still hope...

The only two adagios I know that so readily bring my tears are those of Tchaikovsky’s symphony No. 5 and Mahler’s No. 6. They touch the innermost recesses of the soul

It's one of my favorite symphonies and I heard it many many times, but never before has the recording been so clear and remarkable. You can really hear every single instrument, truly amazing. I hear things I never heard before, like hearing it for the first time again. So wonderful.

The cinematography is as breathtaking as the performance!

This and his No. 1 are two of the greatest symphonies of all time, followed by No. 4 and No. 6 !!!!!

I used to listen to this during the rainy season out here on the Wet Coast. The recording was of a Czechoslovakia Orchestra. I like this version quite well. I'd like to think this version is closer to the way it was played when written.

Tchaikovsky in my opinion stands up there with the greatest composers. This symphony is a one of a kind pure magic.

Myself and my eldest grandson, Luke, saw Vas in Montreal 3 years ago and just had to go last night to Leeds Town Hall. As we drove away, Vas came down the steps opposite the Victoria pub, clutching his bouquet and I shouted to him "отлично" and trully he had been, once again. Just love this student of the Scouse language!

Another wonderful rendition of the 5th by the native country of the composer. It is good yet unsurprising that the Russian spirit rises to the occasion!!

Fantastic sound. Oh my God. Great, faithful, reading. Just about every player digs in. WHat you get with other orchestras is half-hearted playing, the further you get from the conductor.

Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky. What can one say? I listened to an analysis of Mozart's Jupiter 4th movement and it was fascinating the work that Mozart did, but Tchaikovsky. What is this thing he has done. From this mood to that. To this sound to that. He builds this cathedral of sound of music and song. I enjoy listening to Petrenko bring out each phrase, each mood, building, speaking, pushing, pulling, almost like a tone poem. What is Tchaikovsky saying? Petrenko knows and he tells us. And the orchestra. wow. the strings, the winds, the brass, the percussion. Sing to us. Tell us the story. Move our hearts. Ode to Russia. The place. The people. The spirit. What are your lyrics? Only triumph. Only the human spirit. From melancholy to joy and a race between. Thanks!!

A great performance .

I'm going to dissent here and watch the questioning of my parenthood mount up! I adore Tchaikovsky. I write a blog about his life and work. I've loved him for more than 50 years. And I love this piece. It's just that this isn't the way to conduct it. Just to give one example: The Finale is held back for fear of bombasm. But it IS bombastic. It's the weakest movement in all of the last three symphonies, but you don't conquer that problem by flying through it as quickly as possible. You make it big and allow it to stand or fall in its own merits. Just one of my quibbles with this performance - I have no quibbles about the music!

@Michael Paul Smith Sorry, I must disagree. This work has been a lifelong favourite of mine. I agree, how to handle the conclusion is contentious, but the young Petrenko, for whom I have an admiration that grows with every performance I hear, gets it exactly right ─ take it more slowly and it can fall apart (this is the thing that I'm uncomfortable with in the great Svetlanov's otherwise magnificent approach to this work, particularly those final four chords). I have quibbles, for example the the horn solo early in the second movement which seems limited in expression, and perhaps the early part of the last movement is a fraction too fast, but that may just be me. In total, this is among the best performances of this superb (of not quite perfect) work I have heard. I guess one of the exciting things about music is that there is never just one right way to interpret a piece, which is why our views differ on a work we both know well and love dearly.

Debatable (in the good sense of the word...debates sometimes make us see things in a different way and make us open our minds)...I personally very much like the version by the Sinfónica de Galicia...I think they bring out this aspect better...

The Russians do it right. In-between movements or pieces they don't clap. I don't mind it myself as it's a natural thing to do. But it's great that those in the audience perhaps understood not to until the conductor faced them, acknowledging that he had finished painting the picture.

One of my favs. No idea why Cleveland, Ohio has one of the best Orchestras in the world but,,, happy we do. performed this last year, amazing.

It begins with a solemn Russian theme, used by Glinka in A Life for the Tsar.

i have grown used to seeing gergiev conduct, and do so masterfully, but petrenko deserved that russian rhytmic applause, which is there equivalent of a standing O. i love to see how especially younger russian musicians/conductors, bow in the same manner. one more thing about petrenko. i, too, have listened to this symphony for years (cleveland, szell), and i am very picky if a conductor departs from what i consider the norm, especially when they speed things up. hell, levine would have been out of there 5 minutes before the end of this performance. bravo to all

Every conductor has his [or her] take on the first movement tempi and how to make the changes. They are not marked in the score, so everyone must make a choice as to how they want to do it. This recording is certainly close to what I would like to hear.

Me thinks the violinist at 42.18 is in love with the conductor!

Johann Sebastian Bach once said that there were only two purposes of music: the glory of God or the refreshment of man's soul. This majestic symphony from Holy Russia serves both ends. A work of pure genius from a troubled and anguished man. So much magnificent music was born in Imperial Russia which hs never been and will never be equalled. By contrast, not much of any value emanated from the USSR because the bolsheviks had no souls.

Procurei por cerca de 20 gravações (!) na busca por uma interpretação da Sinfonia em Mi menor que fosse perfeita. Somente achei semelhante interpretação no grande Mariss Jansons... VASILY PETRENKO e a State Symphony Orchestra of the Russian Federation são PERFEITOS...
