What's going on everybody?! SeanPierceJohnson here with this week's episode of Stompbox Saturday! On the stompin' block this week is the Dark Matter Distortion from TC Electronic.
A pedal that didn't seem to get a whole lot of buzz when it was first released, I discovered this pedal while attending GuitCon. I was impressed by it's intense gain range AND how versatile it was.
I was surprised how many of you liked this pedal as much as I did AND had come up with some cool uses for it. In addition to a few of my favorite settings we'll try the Dark Matter out as a Boost in front of a Crunch tone and as a preamp and running into the power amp of my Orange Rockerverb 100.
Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Blues, and even Djent. This is a great pedal!

Great review. I own and use this pedal . I dig this pedal better than other similar pedals because this has a certain shade to the tone t h at I dig. I noticed this special grooving only after using it a lot. This has a nice mellowness achievable with a dark doom tone. I find this characteristic to be very useful. I think it is a great pedal. Very very inexpensive and very very cool sound.

I remember in my early tone quest looking for a gain pedal and a kid working at GC directed me to the OCD. He also recommended to pair it with a boost pedal. I like incorporating other gain/od/eq pedals/scenarios. This a good thorough gain pedal review. One thing I have been obsessed with is general background noise/hiss from distortion pedals. Some super gainy cheap danelectro pedals are super quiet when engaged like the Cool Cat Fuzz (one of my favorite pedals) and some popular pedals are just noise monsters when engaged and not playing. It sounds like lazy design without knowing too much about electronics.

JoaoGomesYYZ hey man! Sounds like it might be the pedal but I don’t think it’s necessarily a problem with your pedal. SeanPierceJohnson I’m going to be using it with an orange terror stamp. I’m trying to decide between this or an overdrive, like a mojo, since it’s also a great value. The downer about the stamp is that it doesn’t have a separate clean channel, but it sounds great with a tube screamer as a boost and an EQ pedal for some variation. I’m just looking for something that’ll help me switch from clean dirtyish to heavyish. This will probably give me the most gain variation as a switch.

I usually give this guy a hard time in my head, but I've watched a few demos on this pedal, and he's the only one to actually show how versatile it is. For fifty bucks, I really don't think there is a more versatile distortion pedal. Sludge, Rockabilly, Hair Rock, Classic Rock, and even some straight up Metal, this pedal can pull them all off.
