    I got me a Howell fluted .45 colt cartridge conversion cylinder for my Uberti 1858 new model army revolver and I love it! I shoot HSM .45 colt 200 grain smokeless cowboy loads from it and it’s so much nicer than doing traditional loose black powder and cap and ball shooting. I’ve been out shooting twice with it and put about 30 rounds through it and I made a video of me doing my first shots out of it and posted it on my channel

    It would be nice if the conversion cylinder wasn't about the same price of an 1858 Remington.

    Agreed. I want a conversion cylinder for my Pietta Colt 1851, but the cylinder is $215 while I only paid $150 for the revolver.

    Wonder if you could get a hammer with a firing pin and ditch the back plate to reload without removing the cartridge? Would be especially convenient on a Cold 1851 Navy.

    By the way: If you happen to buy a conversion cylinder for an 1847 Walker _and_ an 1848 Dragoon, then do something foolish like mix the backplates up between the cylinders-- the backplates are pretty much identical so it shouldn't matter, but don't worry because the Walker backplate has a 'W' marked on it while the Dragoon has a 'D' marking.

    So, I just bought a black powder cylinder from a friend of mine. There is an R stamped on the back of it. Does this indicate that it is designed for a Remington?

    Taylor’s G S fitted a 45 Colt converter to my 1970’s Armi San Paola 1858 Remmie. Turns out it’s a Ricochet machine, as it’s rifling twist is 1 in 32, for B P round balls. Standard twist for 45 Colt is 1 in 16. Otherwise, Federal 225 gr. LSWC ammo is the best choice, with a Track of the Wolf California front sight, dovetailed into the barrel, and filed down to P O A!

    The Taylor’s and company’s conversion cylinders are great the only complaint I have is I’ve had mine for about 6 months it has worked flawlessly everytime I’ve shot it but today I looked at the firing pins under a flashlight and every single one of them is cracking from the top down, all 6 of them. Luckily it’s only 24$ for 6 replacements but I feel like they should last longer than 6 months of heavy use at the 250$ price point

    Do the conversion cylinders fit all black powder revolvers? Dragoon's and 44 walkers not included

    How's a 5 shot cylinder match up to the hand / hammer linkage of the 6 shot revolver ? Seems like the revolvers timing would be jeopardized by introducing a different count cylinder 🤷

    Douglas S you cannot duplicate a C & B 1851’s geometry. 44’s are not original, so all are replicas. A steel frame 51 in 44 will accept five or six shot 45 Colt converters. When Colt 73’s arrived, they were top heavy for Vets of the Civil War. A new generation had to be trained, by the Army, to be able to hit anything on the move, from horse back. This is why Civil War pistoleros reverted back to what worked for them in that War. Their gripe was that the new Colt S A A balanced like the Brit. Webleys. My 1970’s ASP 58 Remmie copies the first Gen. Fordice Beals 1858, and has grips too small for my hands. But Jesse James loved them.

    What I don't understand I have a Remington bison large 12-in barrel revolver in black powder and I purchased a cylinder for it but I used very low grain of powder even as low as 500 FPS and I have no problem shooting it with the brass frame so what could happen if I'm shooting it lower than the actual pressure that the gun requires

    Eventually the brass will stretch and it'll become unsafe. Always best to stick with steel

    My Pietta 1858 New model Army has a Taylor's and Company cartridge conversion cylinder. Why are there no safety notches? Could these notches be milled into the cylinder without damage?

  • @mattd6128

    @mattd6128

    5 жыл бұрын

    Most likely could be milled but wouldn't leave much metal on the back plate not much clearance between firing pins. .I own one for my pieta 1858 they suggest if you are going to carry it as your side arm to only load 5 and carry with the hammer on the empty chamber.while at the range target shooting loading all six is no problem.that was in the instructions included with the conversion cylinder. Although being a single action as long as it is holstered with a hammer loop loading all six and resting the hammer on a loaded chamber should be fine but not suggested by the manufacturer. Hope this helps some.

    Ouch! It really is a five shot sidearm. This design never had a safety notch in it’s hammer. Fordyce Beals put all his marbles on the safety notches in the original percussion cylinder. The screw in fallows holding the six firing pins are wider than the nipple cutouts. Anybody can fumble a revolver in a holster. You don’t dare load all six chambers in a conversion cylinder. Plus the locking notches are shallower than in the percussions’. So the locking bolt won’t come far enough up into the cylinder to do any good, with the hammer on the narrow bosses between the farrows retaining the firing pins. FWIW, the best factory load I’ve found is Federal Champion 225 gr. SWCHP! But even these beg for a higher front sight. I ordered two “Track of the Wolf” California Sights and have been filing down the first, before installing the second one.

    Damn I’ve got a brass 1858 and wanted to convert it. Brass not strong enough to withstand the pressure of smokeless powder?

  • @richardscheirman9782

    @richardscheirman9782

    Yes but will stretch fast. The brass used today by pietta is bsdass. I shoot 30 grain pyrodex pellets ontop of about 5to10 grains of goex. Thousands of rounds no stretching yet.

    Jessie James “Last Ditch” brass framed Colt open tops, pulled too hard on their Arbors’ threads, with nitro powders. Plus, old Colts shot their wedges “tight” and the replicas shoot them loose, even with loose B P or Pyrodex P.

    A 44 caliber percussion becomes a 45 colt or 45 schofield I'm told. Get some blackhills blackpowder or smokeless cowboy loads, with a steel frame gun. A 36 caliber, becomes a 38 colt. But there is a hitch with the 36. A 38 is .357, the barrel bore of a 36 is .375 for .375 ball. The regular .38 will be so loose in a .36 bore, accuracy will suffer. But if you get some black hills .38 special 148 grain HBWC (hollow base wad cutter), they should do fine, as the hollow base will expand to fill the .375 bore. About 32.95 box of 50. I just ordered a box from ammo to go, and ordered a engraved .36 cylinder for my Uberti 1851 from Taylor's an Company. Eagerly waiting on the cylinder to arrive.

    It is done wrong. It needs a loading gate and one firing pin. The gun needs to be loaded quickly with cylinder in gun. This is a bad design

    Ha Ha! I use Clint Eastwood’s approach with an antique house door key with it’s teeth filed off, tied to my holster. It is criminal how fast I can run through 100 reloads of replica B P at the bench. Solvent on a rag using this key keeps frame and cylinder fouling fairly clean for long strings of shots. Loading gate versions still gum up, and need pulled apart for frequent cleaning, if you’re shooting bullseyes at 25+ yards.

    Less a "conversion" and more an "alternate cylinder" A gated conversion requires you to cut away part of the recoil shield, a permanent alteration of the gun.
