Taylor vs Guild vs S Yairi Acoustic Guitars Comparison - All Strung with Cleartone Strings

Музыка

Here is my 3 acoustic guitars comparison video. This comparison features Taylor 110e, Guild D4, and S Yairi YDT-18 acoustic guitars. All guitars have Dreadnought shape, Spruce Top, Mahogany Back and Sides. I restrung all with fresh Cleartone Phosphor Bronze gauge 11 strings. 3 sets of strings were supplied by Cleartone Strings.
The audio was recorded using Zoom Q8 video camera. No sound editing was made. Just direct from Q8 mic.
Gears:
Strings used in the video: Cleartone Phosphor Bronze - amzn.to/2LPSlAl

For each of the 5 samples I rated each guitar on a scale of 1 - 5. Guild came out the winner for me closely followed by Taylor and then Yairi. At present I do not own any of the three, but have been considering both the Guild and Taylor. I think you have helped me in making my decision.

Had a signed 1983 K. Yairi acoustic electric for many years before selling it to a musician in Moscow Russia. I believe all Yairi hand made guitars are great, but I would personally give the edge to K. Yairi...the quality of the woods used and the details - mother of pearl and ebony etc. were/are exceptional. Just my opinion...but I'm a fan of all guitars. JV.

I’ve owned a guild before and do own an S Yairi model 9110 since 1972. Similar to your examples but both with rosewood back and sides. I also love Taylors. In your examples I felt A and C were very similar and both my first choices. B, the Guild was very good. (Like the one I once owned.) Seems like a bigger sound with more low end, but slightly more boxy. I prefer the more articulated, delicate tone, especially from the Yairi and similar to the Taylor.

I own many acoustics. But my heart belongs to Guild. I bought my first in 1981 and my last a few weeks ago. I shut my eyes... And chose B every time. Thank goodness - I chose the Guild. I thought A had it's good moments - I have 4 Taylor's!!! I'm most relieved and I loved your review! I know everyone's hearing is different, but also playability is important. So I'm not sure what your feelings are about that, but do you have a favourite? Many thanks again!

Edwin-E I was looking for videos on the S Yairi and came across your review. I loved the Guild but I find it interesting that you like the S Yairi the most. I too prefer a shorter scale guitar. I have my Guilds and Taylor's so it's time to play an S Yairi (if I can find one). I'm in Sydney, Australia and it's hard to find good guitar shops, let alone a special guitar!!! Thanks for replying to me - I'm going to keep an open mind!!!

All 3 sound great. Taylor was easy to pick out. I did guess the other 2 correctly though. The Guild's fuller bass was throwing me off...it sounded to me like you weren't hitting the same bass note when playing the Yairi....maybe you were...I'm just stating what it sounded like. My order of preference #1 Guild, #2 Yairi #3 Taylor.

I really enjoyed the Yairi and the Guild. The Taylor is very good sounding, but since it has a laminated body without a bowl-shaped back, I would be wary how well it ages. To me the Yairi appears relatively newer and hasn't yet picked up that dry resonance the older Guild has. The Yairi will age very well. The D4 is familiar territory for me. I owned one and it is a fine folk instrument that has that aged depth to the midrange that Guilds are famous for. The only problem with the budget-conscious D4 is that most at this point are close to neck reset time and lose some crispness as the string pull angle over the saddle diminishes. Everyone has their tone preferences. Mine tend toward Guild. Although my new D20 is a featherweight monster with outstanding bass.

For strumming, ACB -> Taylor, SYairi, Guild. I'm a bit surprised that the SYairi held its own. Disappointed in the strumming sound of the Guild, which was noticeably "boxy" compared to the other two. It's more difficult to pick out the best fingerstyle guitar - the Taylor was noticeably brighter than the other two (which were pretty much tied). If that's your thing, go with the Taylor. If you prefer your fingerstyle to be a bit more mellow, then the S Yairi and Guild are the way to go.

Edwin-E - I liked the B guitar best, then C which I also liked a lot because it sounded very nice in the midrange and high notes, and my least favorite was A. I very much liked the deep bass of the Guild which also sounded fuller overall. Yairi is a brand that I’ve never heard of until this video. I was surprised that the Taylor sounded dull and flat to me. If you like short scale guitars, I highly recommend the Gibson J-45 standard, which also has a slim tapered neck. It’s the most comfortable acoustic guitar that I’ve ever played.

A was the brighest, B had the most bass. B and C were pretty close. Unfortunately we didn't really see any flat picking or picking with a straight pick. Strings and their gauge can also make a big difference. Reviewers should give the type of strings which was done here but the gauge wasn't mentioned although all 3 guitars used the same. I just thing some guitars benefit from a heavier gauge depending on the genre etc. Great job tho, thanks.

I think we also tend to prefer the sound of the guitars we own sometimes (it’s a bit like how we prefer the music we grew up with rather than new music sometimes). B guild sounded the best to me for most things followed by C the yaris. The A taylor sounded the best with the "kiss the rain" song and really stood out above the other 2 for clarity, separation, and string balance fir that song. The taylor I think would be ideal for a picker but not as much for a strummer.

The Guild D4 has a pressed, molded laminate back. It elimates back bracing and pushes the sound out the soundhole. The Guild D6 (3 year run only) had a solid back and more bling. The D4 was a basic model that gave you a ton of tone. It runs on the warm side and is very "woody" sounding.

Honestly there ain't much difference only a slight. Difference in the top end. I would say if you own any one of these you got a good guitar only real vintage would out play these. And that's gonna cost you,,,
