    I played with a 512ce 12 fret at the Babcock store last week. If I had not already set my eye on the 327ce, I would have walked out with the 512ce. I was amazed at the sound coming out of the the 12 fret. Big sound, het small enough to be “fun” to bang around with.

    Excellent presentation and coverage of the line. You do this better than anyone on the web. I’d like to comment on V bracing. I think putting it across the line is a mistake. On some guitars it’s fine, but not all the models. In some models, V class causes sound compression that takes away the low and mid range punch of X bracing. The compression also takes out some the sparkle in the overall tone. Offering V class as an option or on just the models were it works would be better. V class joins the other Taylor nothing burgers like that ridiculous sound port that does nothing, and the T5z which has never sounded like an acoustic no matter what they say.

    Very nice video, but I'm not really understanding the explanation of the slotted headstock. Asthetics? Sure. But the other two reasons? Weight relief makes less sense with the shorter neck. Due to the 12 fret approach, the guitar is already less likely to be neck heavy. If anything, 14 fret guitars could benefit more from weight relief. I'm not really clear how the break ankle adds to any sort of "slinky" feel. The shorter scale length (24-7/8 vs 25-1/2) certainly does. Distance from nut to tuner might matter for bending notes if the the strings slid back and forth in the nut. But break angle? Not sure. But so what anyway. This video is highly informative. The presenter does a great job of showing the various model both verbally and through some very nice playing. Bravo!

    Let your heart not be troubled! Be grateful you have an x-braced model rather than the new "lates t and greatest" V-class bracing. Let your ears be your guide. Search the YT video Taylor 812ce 12-fret X-braced vs X-class. PMT does a direct side-by-side comparison. The difference is stark. X- braced is much fuller with greater depth and articulation and sustain. V-class is relatively "sterile" by comparison. BTW, the claim that intonation is better with V-class is not so much. I have played (and have ordered) one of the remaining few X-braced Deluxe models, and I had absolutely no trouble with intonation all the way up the neck. I think once folks don't have a choice between the "old" X-braced models of Taylors and the new V-class models, perhaps they won't realize that there is a BIG difference, so they won't know what they are missing in the V-class. Just my opinion, mind you! I am VERY critical of tone in musical instruments, so bear that in mind. Many folks can't discern timbre differences, in which case they might not be affected by those differences. I am a Martin Dreadnaught (D-41 Re-imagined and D-45 Custom Shop Italian spruce/Madagascar rosewood) fan, so that big full sound is where my ears are coming from. That said, I absolutely fell in love with the X-braced Taylor 812ce 12-fret Deluxe. I also love the X-braced 612e 12-fret. I was blown away by how great that maple bodied axe sounded! Very even response across the strings with plenty of the depth my ears crave.

    @@edfulginiti8798 You're welcome! I'm one who researches virtually everything I'm considering for purchase. That's particularly true when it comes to expensive products, and especially musical instruments. Tone, intonation, playability, quality of craftsmanship, and reliability record/aftersale support are priorities. In musical instruments TONE is number 1. If an instrument doesn't sound good to my ears, and if its intonation/scale is not good, I don't go beyond that in my evaluation of it.

    I think he said the scale length is the same between 12 and 14 frets in this series. The difference is that when you move the neck down two frets you also move the bridge down by the same distance, putting it into the center of the lower bout - a much better location for the bridge.

    I whole heartedly agree! See my posts above. I think Taylor is making a big mistake by abandoning the X-bracing in favor of the new V-class. As a Martin gal I never could warm up to what I considered the "trebly" Taylor sound -- until they modified the bracing called "Enhanced Performance" bracing. That made a huge difference. It gave their guitars more depth and warmth. So to my ears, the new V-class bracing takes those wonderful tonal characteristics away again. It is a step backwards.

    812ce 12 fret Deluxe X-braced is far richer/fuller in sound than the new V-class. If you don't believe it, check out the YT video by PMT which compares them side-by-side. I have played both, and I had no problem with intonation nor with sustain on the X-braced model. The V-braced instrument, when compared directly with the X-braced sounds sterile. If you only play the V-class guitar without comparing with X-braced, you might not realize what a huge difference there is. You just might think "something is missing" with the V-class. No meaning to rain on the V-class parade, just expressing my opinion as well as that of so many of my acoustic guitarist friends. Full disclosure: I am a dyed-in-the-wool Martin gal, so it is difficult for me to like many other guitars. That said, I REALLY like the X-braced 812ce 12 fret AND believe it or not, the x-braced 612e 12-fret! Beautiful guitars, in appearance, features and especially tonal response. I have to say I'm sorry to see Taylor abandon the X-braced construction. There is a reason that bracing pattern has historically been used in the world's greatest guitars.

    @@matteo-nf1kv A matter of opinion. Important to listen to that PMT and other reviews with high resolution headphones or buds. My ears - after 63 years as a professional musician - prefer the x-braced 812ce 12-fret by far. It has more depth and warmth. The comparison that Chris recorded between the 814ce 14-fret X- and V-class instruments surprised me. In that comparison I found the V-braced instrument quite nice, though not necessarily better than the x-braced guitar. Perhaps the larger body produced the full sound I like. That said, I still much prefer - and own - the x-braced 812ce 12-fret. If I want big sound I have two Martin Dreadnoughts - a D-45 Custom shop with madi back and sides and Italian spruce top, and a D-41 Reimagined. Have no need or desire for anything else. The guitar I play most? Taylor X-braced 812ce 12-fret. Love it for its rich, full balanced tone with great intonation and ease of playing. Does that answer your question to me?

    I have a Taylor 312. Not V braced. I think the V braced guitars sound good. OK, here is what I don't get. Why do Martin fans, some of them anyway, find it necessary to bad mouth the Taylor guitars? It isn't just Martin fans but they appear most obvious. Yes, Taylor guitars sound different, brighter. But I see that like differences in human voices. I like Bob Seeger a lot. I like the late Dan Fogelberg a lot. I like the late John Denver a lot. Wouldn't it be a shame if these singers sounded alike? They all made names for themselves but are so different. Live and let live.

    I still call bs on the “better intonation” claim. All harmonics are “in tune” as they are a result of a mathematical series. There are no accidental overtones or “out of tune” overtones. These harmonics are a huge part of instrument timbre. Taylor calling it “better intonation” is marketing semantic acrobatics. “Better intonation” is the title they give to the unique overtone series created by their bracing pattern and guitar.

  • @andrewhartnett2140

    @andrewhartnett2140

    Жыл бұрын

    Also, since when do we discuss intonation beyond the fundamental pitch. We don’t adjust the intonation of any harmonics when we make physical adjustments to our guitars. We are changing the fundamental. Harmonics certainly affect the sound, no doubt about that. Discussions of things like even and odd harmonics are common in the guitar amplification and effects worlds. Certain combinations of harmonics sound bad or unpleasant. We have all heard distortion sounds that we found irritating, likely due in part to the harmonic make up of that distortion. However, it wasn’t out of tune. Harmonics can’t be out of tune bc they are dependent on the fundamental being sounded at the time. Theoretically, bc guitar is polyphonic and multi stringed, you could have one string properly intonated, and thus “in tune”, while other strings are not. This has nothing to due with bracing thought. It would be the result of an non square guitar or misplaced saddle etc. I appreciate your content and work. I’m not looking to be particularly contentious but I was never one to just believe what someone tells me. Unless you have a physics based explanation of how this bracing can change intonation, I can’t buy it without some proof.
