She wrote it with Joe, her ex. He did the piano part. It was during Covid so Taylor wasn’t meeting with anyone except her family and team like Jack and Aaron. She wanted a strong male vocal so she asked Justin Vernon, the lead singer of Bob Iver, however everyone was avoiding everyone because of Covid. She sent the lyrics and Justin said no man would say these things so he and Taylor worked together to make it more realistic from the man’s perspective. They recorded in separate studios and that’s what is on the album, Folklore. I am curious what the lyrics were before Justin said no.

So I'm new to this channel but I love your reactions.. My Tears Ricochet is the best song to listen to if you want to hear about how she feels about her masters being stolen.. Renegade is also amazing.. check it out!

She does another incredible song with Justin Vernon from Bon Iver from Evermore called Evermore 😊 it's so good. Their voices mesh so well together

My other favorite Bon Iver/Taylor duet is Renegade by Big Red Machine. BRM is a special project that BonIver (Justin) and her producer Aaron do together. ❤️🫶 The band Bon Ivers album For Emma, Forever is a favorite of mine too ❤️ And you said Bon Iver correctly! 🫶

LETS GOOOO! I was so worried about messing it up.

Taylor has a great imagination, it is rumored that Taylor wrote a novel called "A Girl Named Girl" supposedly about a woman who had a baby girl but wanted a boy, so she called her girl.

Taylor might have committed murder "No Body No Crime" is from her "evermore" album, which is the sister album of "folklore" (it came out 5 months after "folklore".

We like first-time reactions. It's so much better if you don't know the songs. It's much more genuine. Just something to consider.

This was a first time reaction to the long pond studio version. The song I had heard 1 time before on the studio album version.

You pronounced Bon Iver correctly. Aren't they fabulous together? I hope they sing together again sometime.

Listen to My Tears Ricochet, that is autobiographical!

In retrospect now, I do think a lot of the songs from Folklore and Evermore are intertwined with whatever she was feeling about Joe at the time.

They have to be. There is no way she can make someone feel the way she does if there is not some sort of personal feelings in the lyrics.

There are some songs on Folklore and Evermore that are autobiographical but most songs are fiction!!

No matter what Taylor writes about, she pulls from personal experience that she's had to write whatever she's writing! It may not be HER specific experience but she always draws on things she's experienced to make things as emotional, personal & relatable as she does.

Agreed. Even with Folklore and Evermore being non autobiographical it is hard to write something this deep without personal knowledge

@@HugieReacts That's actually a common misconception, especially about the Folklevermore Era! They are intensely personal! Even though you have the Teenage Love Triangle of Cardigan, August and Betty, you can still pick up things specific to Taylor within those, especially in retrospect of the fact that her and Joe eventually broke up. There's also things like the Last Great American Dynasty, which is about Rebecca Harkness but all of the things that she had to deal with during her lifetime of being judged by everybody and being considered outrageous in her behavior are also things Taylor has to go through (and I'm pretty sure that even had something to do with why Taylor bought that house)! I think that with the Folklevermore era and Midnights especially, she gave us this "conceptual idea" of the albums as a way to write really personal stuff without it seeming like she was riding really personal stuff! Anywho, thanks for going down the rabbit hole-is like crack for us Swifties!

Her ex Joe co-wrote it and just by hearing it. That was their way of explaining why they broke up. 6 years of a relationship that didn’t end up in marriage. It’s one of my favorite songs from her. He also co wroted champagne problems. He proposed and she said no.

I’m thinking this song is about a divorce/breakup. The understudy is a affair partner, (a person audition for your role) I’ve seen this film before… we’ve been through this before affairs/marital problems. The same with we walked a very thin line.. Her parents are divorced and I’m guessing she has friends and family who’s been through breakups and divorce. It also seems that around this time she and Joe Alwyn hade some difficulties in their relationship

An “understudy” is an actor who prepares for a role in case the main actor can’t do it for whatever reason. It is about a breakup where he thinks it came out of nowhere but she has been telling him all along that she wasn’t happy.

@@HugieReacts I don’t think she and Joe were having any issues during Folklore writing. Doesn’t seem like their breakup was really drawn out or messy, they just grew apart like so many couples.

@@HugieReacts yes most of the songs on Folklore are fictional where she is just creating relatable situations and writing songs about them. Joe wrote the first verse and the piano sequence idea. Justin wrote the bridge part “step right out…” and Taylor wrote the rest.
