Because on the Lover album there are multiple references and hints that she was ready to marry him way back then, so it wouldn't make sense if she hypothetically said no. Besides, it's confirmed that they wrote together this particular song during the pandemic

@@Schweighsr i’ve heard those rumors, but i feel like “you’re losing me” suggests it may have been the other way around. either way, they wrote this song together almost three years before their breakup so i’m almost certain it isn’t about her and joe. that’s not to say it can’t be about another personal experience but imo it’s fictional, like a lot of the songs on evermore and folklore
