i love how he didn't even flinch though - showing the slightest sign of surprise like "oh, really?" would be quite a slip-up : ) he doesn't skip a beat, immediately offers *more* purchase on the top of it. that's a pro if i've ever seen one

I love how all the mystique and finesse Easy Andy had throughout the whole gun selling process is completely lost the second he starts offering drugs for sale, in Travis' eyes he was the holy iron monger providing him with the weapons he needed to embark in his crusade, but after getting the guns from him he transforms into just another scumbag dealing poison.

The gun dealer in this scene was a real life drug dealer. An incident from his life was covered in a short documentary made by Scorsese when he was a student. Tarantino then adapted that incident into the scene in Pulp Fiction where they have to stab Uma Thurman with adrenaline because of a heroin overdose.

Such a great scene on so many levels. Scorsese at his very finest. The movie, and Travis, are escalating here and the viewer really sits up and takes notice. A few things: 1) The workaday way that Andy handles the gun sale is super fascinating to watch. Even though he is selling firearms he treats it like any widget. He knows his products and is detail oriented. 2) His youthful appearance and haircut belie the criminal nature and severity of what he is doing 3) The banal sounds coming trough the window serve as a counterpoint of the seriousness of the gun transaction. The shot of the gun pointing at the two women under the umbrellas is really chilling and amplifies this effect. 4) The way he has the holster ready (to sell, not to give, to Travis) shows how much he orchestrated everything on his end 5) When he has the gun sale closed, the effortless manner in which he switches to drug dealer gives the scene an entirely deeper sense of menace. Andy will sell anything to anyone, no matter how dangerous or harmful.

  • @agentanaranjado

Beautifully stated. It also must be noted how Travis’ approach to the transaction turns truly transactional as soon as Andy begins offering other illicit goods. A common degree of indecency led them to that room, but their psyches diverged when he brought up drugs and illegal cars. Travis maintains some sort of sick code in the face of luxury commodities.

Believe it or not my favorite scene in the movie , loved this actor Steven Prince who did a masterpiece of selling here. Lots of psychology in his selling. Great tough descriptive language while you salivate over those classic guns. I saw Mr Prince on a 2009 video story telling, I could listen to him all day. Glad to know he's still here 👍

"You could go out and hammer nails with it all day, come back, and it'll cut dead center on target every time." I kind of feel the same way about this movie. The gritty unapologetic dialog compliments Scorsese's dark visuals. It one of those movies you either love or hate. I've never meant anybody who, after watching this film, kind of shrugs and says, "eh! It was OK." Most are either fascinated or repulsed.

Yeah old Andy was showing his racism there. Back then, a lot of black people (hence his racist remark) didn't know a whole hell of a lot about guns or their worth. So he could get away with selling a .44 Magnum to them for $500.00 instead of a reasonable price like he did for Travis. And being that this movie was released in 1976, racist remarks like "Jungle Bunny" were casually thrown in just about every movie you saw. Good thing times have changed huh 😉

You might like Andy/ Steven Prince tell stories from around them in Scorsese’s documentary about him: American Boy. Some stories he’s loud but some he’s slow and relaxed, with an even more throaty voice. Calm about childhood before the storm of him killing a guy defending himself, but even in that story it’s told in an eerily calm and soothing way. Great story teller
