Finding a nest
In early January Luna & Bomber return to their favourite owl box, but there are signs a barn owl has been here.
Barn owl squatters
Barn owls Gylfie and Dryer have been using the nest. A scuffle ensues but the barn owls don't stay to fight.
Tawny owls settle in
With the barn owls gone, Bomber & Luna inspect the nest and Luna scrapes a hollow for her expected eggs.
Luna lays 1st egg
By early March, the first egg is laid. Tawny owls incubate as soon as the eggs are laid and so glimpses are rare.
Barn owls return
But that night, whilst Luna is out, the barn owls return. Whilst her partner Dryer keeps watch, Gylfie taps the egg- this is fascinating behaviour.
Intruders
Then an unknown male tawny owl appears. Thankfully Bomber is nearby and quickly flies to Luna's aid. But the drama’s not over yet. Gylfie’s returns and she heads straight in. A vicious fight ensues, but Luna will do everything to keep her egg safe.
More tawny eggs
Sixty-five hours after the first, Luna reveals a second egg!
Snow blows into the nest
But the weather’s taken a turn and as Luna lays her third egg and fourth eggs snow blows in.
Incubation
Now Luna has finished laying, the tawny owls have the long task of incubation. For the next month, Bomber will provide for Luna while she keep the eggs warm… and protects them from danger.
Kestrel invader
And there is plenty to keep her busy. Watch her see off Jeff, a young male kestrel, who is also interested in her nest!
Jackdaw attack
And jackdaws. This fight to protect the tawny owl eggs is brutal.
Chick calls from inside egg
By the 6th of April, Luna has been brooding for over a month. Then the nest fills with the sound of a chick calling from inside the egg… and Luna calls back.
Hatching process
The chick uses its egg tooth… a temporary, sharp projection on its beak, to pierce the air sac inside the shell. There’s only a small reserve of air inside, so now it uses the egg tooth again to ‘pip’ open the egg, making small holes as it rotates, a bit like a can opener.
Chick emerges
Soon the crack extends all the way across, letting air inside… and reenergised, the chick slowly makes its way into the world.
First tiny wings wiggle from the shell. Next, it leverages its back onto the floor and pushes it legs up, then rolls its shoulders against the top until it can pull a leg out. Watch it then kick both legs agaist the wall of the shell to break it.
When the chick finally emerges it's exhausted.

After two years of failed clutches, it’s heartwarming to watch Luna tuck the hatchling under her feathers.

What a triumph, watching the first chick calling and breaking out of its shell! The fights with Jeff, the snow blowing in the nest, the failed clutches, this first chick seems like a Godsend indeed. Thank you Robert for sharing these happy moments!

Congrats to Luna for finally having newly hatched chicks who don't immediately explode into two week old owlets.
As far as Luna, & Bomber are concerned, they’ve had many, many children.❤ Luna, & Bomber for Parents of the Year 2024!

Yes, they truly are a power couple, and amazing to all of their chicks - both their own and their adopted ones. They are truly amazing. I hope we get to see new babies this year again 🥰❤

I like how Bomber came to Luna’s aid when that other male owl tried to make a move on her! “Hey!! That’s my woman!!” “Get yo ass out of here!” 😂
I discovered the channel just as Luna laid her eggs and it was the thrill of a lifetime to watch the first chick hatch in real time. Thank you, Robert, for providing access to wildlife for those of us who don't live a country life. Such a joy!

My heart stopped when the barn owls showed up right after the first egg was laid.
Frankly, this was much more wholesome and romantic than a love movie.
Tawnies are awfully cute. Giving Screeches a run for the cute trophy. Oh, goodness, Bomber's body language when he brings Luna's dinner on the branch! 🥰
Whenever I watch them I cry because their story is so beautiful, angelic, and emotional I’m bursting with joy and happiness for the wonderful pair and their first successful baby chick ❤️💕❣️

What a magical piece of heaven that you have, good sir! Just found your channel and I am already obsessed. Just moved into a tiny house in a few acres of woods and I heard the first wild owl EVER in my 50 years the other night. Then, I heard TWO, talking to each other. Oh - it would be magical to actually SEE an owl. I live in an insanely crowded and busy "tourist" area of New England - but in the Winter, you see and hear actual silence, and now that I'm set back a bit from the crazy roads, with a lovely creek right behind my house, I'm VERY excited... for there are OWLS around here!!! Wish me luck - I just want to see one! We have bald eagles near my cottage even further North - watching them "fish" is PURE joy! THANKS! 💖

Seeing this years story is gonna be extra special since it’s the first year I was actually regularly watching the channel and saw this clutch grow. Rocket and nova were a regular part to my day for 2 months haha and solar too when they came in.

She's so cute the way she keeps looking back at her eggs. My house of four years here near Mt. Rainier had a bunch of bird houses that were not used. Last year, tree swallows nested in one. It was the only one facing east. I finished painting them today and put them back up facing east. The grass has grown some, so I will mow my lawn before they return so I don't have to disturb them while they nest. I'll steal some down out of my pillow for them to nest with and put a small branch in my big water tub. Very exciting stuff! Thank your for the beautiful video and the very helpful commentary.
I feel likenive seen this scene before or something similar. The one with the barn owls going in and seeing th tawny egg but not damaging it.
