My experience is that you need to create a space for yourself to be still and clear your mind. Ask your higher power for clarity and understanding prior to the reading to be able to get the most from it. That's my method when I get a reading. And I try to create that when I do readings as well. If you go into it cloudy and in a fog that's what you will get out of it... A cloudy fog
