The way you described it it’s pretty accurate. The pain level goes exactly the way you said. For me it’s like about 6 hours until the pain level goes up drastically.

This is the best video on KZread to describe tattoo pain. I got my sleeve done and the inner forearm and wrist area is painful, but the elbow was not as bad. Generally, the pain fluctuates every 5 mins until I hit the 5-6hr mark and the adrenaline wore off and it was very sensitive so quite painful. Ideally avoid sessions longer than 6/7 hours unless you really have to.

I have a unique perspective as a person with Fibromyalgia who doesn't take nerve medication for the condition. I have quite a few tattoos and in some painful areas (top of foot, chest, wrist, inner-upper forearms) and this video very accurately describes the discomfort in those places. Due to having Fibromyalgia, I'm unable to sit for long periods without experiencing symptoms of shock. 4 hours is now my cutoff point. I was just over 5 hours into my chest piece when my lips changed color and my body was trembling. I didn't notice it, but my tattoo artist did and so we stopped - this was many years ago and hasn't happened since. I think your channel is fantastic and I love that you're educating people. Thank you! 💖

I agree exactly with how you describe the pain. This is accurate, and you’re also right that you don’t know your limit until you have experience with tattoos. The main thing I would add is that the only time I’ve ever had to ask the artist to stop and schedule to finish the tattoo later, it wasn’t because of the tattoo pain. It was because my back and neck muscles started aching and then spasming from laying face down for hours at a time while getting my calf tattooed. It’s hard to know how your body is going to react to sitting/laying in a position you aren’t normally in for an extended amount of time, because you aren’t normally testing that out to see how it goes. So if I had it all to do over, instead of saying “sure, let’s do two 6 - 7 hour sessions where my body is in a position that I don’t ever put it in,” I might say “actually how about we do three 4 - 5 hour sessions instead.”

I've got a lot of tattoos now and a good part of my upper body and arms to fingers covered now, and here is my experience: This video is pretty accurate overall. My feeling is quite like a scratch that is hot at the same time, and that goes on for the duration. The pain graph is very accurate for me. Even at my 10th tattoo, the first 15-20 minutes are not pleasant, but I quickly hit a plateau after that, and it will really become very manageable for the next hours. Since the pain has plateaued, it's no longer the only thing at the front of my mind and thoughts. Because it's streamlined, I was able to basically shut it out with other things, and for every (except those on the hands) tattoo i've got, once I was a this stage, I fell asleep (not a talker, like Ben said), waking up here and there and when the pain start to rise again. At this stage, either you're almost at the end and you kinda have to take it, or if there is still a lot to do it's time to ask for either a break (it's also good for the artist) or stop for this session. My most painful one was the palm of the hand, which had basically no plateau, it was the high pain of the beginning all along, probably because the hand has so much nerves' ends. This really wasn't a fun 2 hours but like Ben said, after than I was proud and happy with what I got for the rest of my life.

I'd also like to say that the pain is an important part of the experience, for a lot of people including me, it has a cathartic purpose, and allows for introspection and, paradoxically, an empty and calmed mind. And each tattoo, separately from any meaning it can have to you, is a reminder of this special moment.

I'm quite new to tattoos and also into my 50's (to scared when younger) but now have several, inner forearm from wrist to elbow took 5 hours, for the most part no problem. The only part which was a bit sore was the white highlights at the end, but for 4 hours and 55 minutes it all felt fine. Back this week for 2 consecutive days for a half sleeve so it can't be that bad as I'm a wimp when it comes to pain !

I’m many years late, but seeing as this popped up on my suggested feed, it must still be commonly watched and relevant for tattoo newbies. I am a female with a relatively high pain tolerance and threshold when it comes to being tattooed. I say that specifically for tattoos because for me personally, it’s more of an endurance test than anything else. How long I’m in a certain position adds to my discomfort. For example, I am roughly 1/3 or 1/2 of the way done with a full back piece that has to be divided into multiple sessions (roughly 5.5 8-10 hour sessions).. it requires me to lie down on my stomach for all those hours and I have a pelvic tilt that makes it difficult for me to find comfort in that position for more than 15 minutes and overall spinal pain. The tattoo becomes almost secondary to the pain, but sometimes depending on what needle is being used- I want nothing more than to sucker punch my very kind and sweet tattoo artist. To me, the larger the tattoo, the more painful it is since the area doesn’t have time to get used to being tattooed. I am not one to feel the pain diminishing after 15 or so minutes since I know what I’m getting myself into and am pretty relaxed to begin with, but he’s essentially spot on about how there’s a period of time whether it be 1 hour or 8 hours that your pain level kind of evens out and then gets to a point where it continually increases as you’ve exhausted/expended your energy for the time being. Your body is your body and its limit is unique to you. My limit looks a lot like restlessness and a deep, longing desire to hear my tattoo artist say “Alright, that’s it for today!” And I’d have tears of joy because of how much I want to just get outta there. It’s usually around the 10th hour for me. Which is rare unless it’s a large tattoo such as the current one being done as I’ve stated, and just plain RARE in general so take my personal threshold with a grain of salt, sometimes it’s also just not my day and it can lower to 5 hours and I’m done. It truly depends. The spine and lower spine feel obnoxious and uncomfortable, and just hurt. When you’re being pushed to a certain point in one area, it feels raw and yes, painful no matter the chemicals being released to minimize the pain. The nerves in my left shoulder hurt really bad for some reason so I only held up for an hour and a half one day before telling my artist to stop and move to another area for the remainder of that day. Everywhere else was easy breezy for 9 hours, but that spot-NOPE. My inner upper arm was super uncomfortable, but focusing on other things and letting my artist do his work and talking to him per usual helped and I was fine the entire 8 hours. It’s not fun but you’ll never know until you try, and I’d recommend something small to start obviously, no matter where. I wouldn’t say avoid an area just because it’s known to be sensitive. I’ve only had one person walk out on me during a foot tattoo (yes, I also am an artist) and they ended up coming back to finish it within 20 minutes. I’ve had people tensed throughout having the area around or on their ribcage tattooed and people who were looking around smiling and humming. You never truly know! Practice meditation. Bring layers! It gets cold. Don’t wear clothes you like(ESPECIALLY WHITE), tattoo ink is a hard thing to get out of your clothes. Dress comfortably and even bring backup clothes just in case. The cozier the better. Last thing I or any artist wants to do is cut your clothes. Legit bring a backpack with snacks water meds, etc.. we care about your comfort and usually will pull a chair up next to you so you don’t have to keep reaching for things in it. Breaks are important too and fresh air, ask your artist if you need one cause odds are if it’s been a couple hours, they need one as well!

This is spot on! The first few minutes are spicy, then it levels out until you hit your wall. The worst for me was my wrist, really close to my hand, but it was bearable, my elbow rattled down to my fingertips, and wasn't exactly pleasant, but I love the way it turned out, and I always feel a bit of pride for the endurance factor!

Ben is spot on. He didn't cover the pain of a second and third tattoo. I had a lot of work done in 3hr sessions over almost a year. The second and third sessions were the worst, then it was a lot more pleasant and the initial 15min became shorter and much less painful. For me the outliner is the worst followed by a big magnum, I have fallen asleep with a shader.

Not sure how many will find this useful, but my first tattoo covered my entire left forearm (wrist and inner elbow). My artist was a guest artist who had travelled here to the UK for only a month. Being a tattoo newbie and considering this limiting factor I asked the artist to have it done on the same day; we're talking about outline, shading and colour. Long story short folk, it took me the better of 11 hours (with a few cigarette breaks in between) to get it done... just like ben's graph in this video, my pain threshold started to escalate out of control around the 7th hour mark. I DO NOT recommend. Because after that specific threshold, it is like an eternal torture!

That's because of the the ulnar nerve ! it goes from the shoulder, then around the elbow, and all the way to the fingertips and connect everything on the way. That's the same nerve that hurts so much when you bump the back of your elbow (because in this precise place, it's on "the exterior" and not protected), often sending a "static" feeling in all of your arm.

I got my first one recently - abstract, ink spatter all over my right arm. It was a seven hour session. The first half was my lower arm and that was fine but by the end when he was doing the point of my shoulder it literally felt like he was drilling into the bone with a power drill and it was agony. The inside of my bicep was really bad too. But, like Ben says, it's not for long and it's worth going through.

I see that Balenciaga shirt bro 👁👁 Lol just joking. Man, I love your videos, I love how in depth and specific you always are. I’ve had shin bone, chest, collar bone and others but the one that was the most difficult was the arm pit. My artist had to remind me to breathe while he kind of powered through it. That one was really worth it. What I’ve noticed with myself, every time I get tattooed, those first five or ten mins are the tougher ones. You’re kind of working into it. After your body kind of manages the shock of the stress, the old endorphins kick in and things get really easy and I’ll get really talkative, almost euphoric but in a very spiritual sense. Im usually good till the end with a few spikes here and there. If the artist smokes, and has to break every 45 mins, then it’s rougher each time we start back up. To summarize though, Ben described the sensation better than anyone else, and it’s not as bad as you think it’s gonna be!

I don't get the people who goes for a tattoo, but never get it finished because "it hurts" Well yes, but if they'd sit still for a wee bit longer, it'll be done and over and they can be happy about it and not whine how it never got finished. Also, a good thing to remember, as soon as the machine is done touching, the pain stops. And sure some areas are more irritating to get tattooed than others, but it's not killing you.. Just suck it up buttercup :D Brilliant explanation on this topic Ben.

Only got two, but by my experience this advice is spot on 👍. The only area I found painful was on my sternum when the area was being reworked for the third time - which was a bit spicy, but manageable even then. Can't wait to get more tbh.

When i was 18, i had both my shoulder blades tattooed. She ended up going to deep. So to compare it to a hot sting is relatable. I’ve got tattoos on my calves, thighs, chest, neck, all over my arms, bottom lip, fingers, knuckles, etc. . but the most painful was the shoulder blades done by her. And also went too deep so the ink is botched

I got a leg sleeve for my first tatt. Day 1, 11hrs and day 2, 8.5hrs. Honestly, it hurt but not soo much that i couldnt take it until the 2nd day when he started shading over the outline he had done the day before. I waived the white flag about 8.5hrs in on day 2 because I knew I would have atleast 6 more days of tattooing and I really couldnt stay still anymore. I started to focus on the pain and it was all downhill from there. Going back in 3 weeks to cintinue shading!

I’m heavily tattooed. I used to find them bearable but the more I get the more they hurt, regardless of body spot. After completing my first body part (full back piece) my tolerance started dropping. My first sleeve was far more painful than myback. I’m half way through my 2nd sleeve so have lots of comparison experience to the other arm and this hurts far more than the first arm. Total BS lol. My body seems to instantly recognize tattoo pain every time I get in the chair and refuses to release any endorphins. But buddy is right, temporary pain for art that lasts a lifetime.

I just got my first tattoo on my inner forearm and it felt like a mildly hot razor making swallow cuts on my arm with what felt like a burn afterwards driving home, lastly an hour or two. Very tolerable pain, I'm bringing something with me next time to focus on. All I had was the art on the wall to focus my attention on.

Just now realizing that my first three tattoos were in the "most painful spots" top of foot (15- early age, I know) wrist (16) forearm (18) and definitely think my thigh piece was the worst- think it was because the tattoo artist had heavy hands. The pain is definitely manageable

For me first ten mins, ouch, ouch, then ok but after 4 hours, then very uncomfortable, BUT did have one lady who done my stomach, four hours and could of sat for another four hours. Depends on how your artist wipes, some scrub, and some are gentle .... Also lines ok, but colour in as more surface area... Could just be me 😃🤗
