Ok. So after some Googling I have learned that adding the bread helps keep the cabbage green and healthy looking while also helping reduce whatever stink cooking cabbage causes. Wow.. pretty awesome.

You're so lucky to have this kind of huge cabbage, we have small ones but very sweet. Looks delicious. Here we put the entire head without stem in boiling water, or even in the microwave, because the leaves are round.
I’m from Nashville, TN USA. My grandmother used to cook something very similar to this except hers were larger “pockets” of meat and cabbage. It was always one of my favorite meals. I make it today but my family likes it more as a chunky soup - meat balls, cabbage, onions and tomato base sauce. It’s comfort food for me as it reminds me of being a little girl at grandma’s house. Thanks for posting such tasty recipes.

Do you know two years ago I planned on turning 60 and my Mum was going to turn 80.... Australia is a big place so I made my way gradually in my truck all those thousands of miles. It was going to be a Birthday of sorts... Mum the 6th of October and me the 13th... I made it there but Mum had pegged out ...some excuse about blood cancer or go get out some bitches will do anything to swerve the washing up.... No matter how appalling any black humour reverence to my Mum I know if she were in the room she would top it with a far more appaling joke. .... Leslie Bolton ..we were lucky to have AT ALL as my Mum but even after that for another 60 years .... you did what it said on the tin marked "Mother" and you only carked it a cuppla months before you hit 80. Not gonna call Customer Service and bitch... But where was I going with this ? Mum couldn't cook for shit. Her Cuisine only became edible once we kids grew up and moved out... OH HOW INSUFFEREABLE SHAME ...a young man teaches his mother how to cook ... Feel my pain Big Planet !!??
