    Matt, good to know. I used to record weddings also but many, many years ago. Hefting a 70# reel to reel, all of the mics, cables, tripods, you get the idea. I remember one time during a mid summer July at a church with no A/C, windows open. OK the bride and groom are kneeling saying their I do's very softly,I might add. The gain is wide open and I'm straining to hear them on the phones. A worst fear happens, a fire engine drives by and guess what, yea, it happened the siren sounds off. Phones come off right away, VU's are maxed out. Now afterward, I'm home trying to fix this. Days later, I got it. I found another wedding and spliced in the correct passage and no one ever found out. They never knew.

    Good initial review Matt, this year the Zoom F2's replaced my Tuscan DR-10L's as main lava and I am using a Zoom F6 for single camera live streaming at present. 32b FP definitely helps loads for the screamers and super quiet brides. I think I might pickup this to replace my Zoom H5 now as I can use it with the built in mics for some recordings or plugin mics as needed.

    If you set 24bit recorders to a proper low recording level, there is no difference from a 32bit recording and no quality loss compared to a higher recording level. Real world recordings only require about 60dB dynamic range maximum. Pencil mics and lavaliers have high self noise and that is the only limitation in the recording chain. Studio microphones and special applications need more care. If you think you need 32bit, reduce the recording level by 15dBs and try again.

  • @NickBuntonStudios

    @NickBuntonStudios

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@aristotle_4532 Point taken on board thanks, however with the majority of my recordings being at funerals or weddings, I don't have the luxury of rehearsals or testing with those who's voice I will be recording, this is where the FP recordings is beneficial. If live streaming, then it's fine with 24bit as I can control the received audio from the mixer to control an output around the -12db.

    I have never been a fan of zoom and I find it funny people are now trying Tascam. Long before 32-bit float Tascam on there 60Dmk1 and mkii, 70D and 701D field recorders all have dual recording which means you can record a back up track at a -db at your desire. My Tascam 701D is a beast and when I get the spare cash I might upgrade to this unit, but my hopes are they integrate the 701D with this new X8 technology. Great Review and look forward to more of your videos!

    I film concerts, live theatre and dance shows. It is not uncommon for a someone to be at one level during the audio check and then get much louder during the performance. This is what partially drew me to the Sound Devices Mix Pre 3. It has outstanding analogue limiters that almost function as a compressor. Mine is the first generation of the Mix Pre 3 so it doesn't have the 32 bit float, but it has never been a problem for me.

    Looks like the F3 doesn't have that combo xlr/quarter port though, that's a no go for me. I rarely use it but sometimes I've had to use the quarter port. Maybe my xlr cord was tied up somewhere else or the DJ had some weird non-xlr output that I had to adapt to. I currently use the Dr-60mkii which works good, but it's friggin huge in my bag. Especially with the battery pack attached to it as it only records 4 hours max off of internal battery power, which is risky for weddings. So the 8-9 hours the X8 promises without the use of a battery pack is quite promising! Great review Matt, and the point about the microphone reaching it's max before the recorder is a very interesting point that I've never heard before but makes sense! And shouts out to DJ Durrell from Signature Events!

    Good review Matt. I’ve been using the Zoom F6 for just over a year now, and I preordered the X8 a while back. I typically like to record to my talents (groom, officiant, sometimes bride, ceremony reader) to the recorder and send select mics to the camera to embed the audio into the video. My question….Does the Tascam X8 have faders like the F6 that allow you to send select lines to the camera but still record full volume to the X8? To illustrate: I have groom, officiant, and ceremony reader mic’d going to the recorder, then a line from the recorder to the camera to embed audio into video. I have the officiant’s fader turned up but groom and reader turned down, so it’s sending only the officiant audio to the camera. But if I forget to turn up the groom or reader’s mic fader on the recorder, it obviously won’t send the audio to the camera but the F6 will still record groom and reader’s mic. Does the Tascam X8 do the same?

    Happy with my Zoom H6, when I see how many things can be setup by pressing buttons or using wheels. Imho its much better than using a display and I'm not talking about using the touch display at all. It may be convenient somewhere, but not in the professional sphere.

    Couldn't agree more, I think the worst piece of gear I ever bought was the Zoom H4n. It wasted so much time at weddings right at the busiest time. The H6 was a huge upgrade and it was mainly just for the knobs and built-in attenuators. Bummer that neither of these new recorders has knobs.

    Hi Matt, great review as always! One (for me) main feature the F6 & SDMixPre II have, but the Tasacam X8 and Zoom F3 lack is Timecode! Especially when you use Tentacle Sync E and Track E devices the X8 and F3 fall short in jaming timecode. The only work around is to buy an additional Sync E and feed it to a channel for the whole time of recording and this would add up the cost.

    Have a Deity TC-1 time code generator. (3) Can the Tascam X8 work with the time code jammer? Was going to use time code with the X8 with 32 bit float. Then also feed into the x8 the DJI Lav on the groom and officiant. Each camera will have its own timecode jammer on them. TC-1's. Will this work? Should I forget timecode. I still have the tc-1 in the Amazon box LOL... want to be sure that I can make this work?

    So I realize there are lots of benefits to recording in 32 bit float. However, one thing that confuses me about recording a feed off an event's sound board: if someone start screaming into the mic and clips the audio, wouldn't that clip within the board as well? If the signal clips upstream from the recorder then it doesn't matter how it's recorded.

  • @whoismatt

    @whoismatt

    You're absolutely correct, which is why I always recommend plugging into the microphone receiver box as well as the sound board. There's usually a quarter inch output on the receiver box that you can use and that bypasses the sound board completely. :)

    You can bring up the level of a too-quiet signal made on _any_ digital recorder with the same results. 32-bit Float is not special in this regard. Where you _might_ find it useful is in preserving loud sounds that would otherwise have clipped in a Linear PCM recording. However, realize two things: 1) 24-bit LPCM already provides something like 144dB of dynamic range, which is broad enough to cleanly capture everything from a gnat's fart to a jackhammer. 2) You are always constrained by the circuit in your signal path with the lowest dynamic range. The preamps on most recorders (with ~90dB dyhamic range best case) will crap out (i.e. distort) well before the converters clip, and no amout of floating bits will recover that. In most situations (presuming a 24-bit recorder with decent, quiet preamps) if you set your inputs to peak at around -30 dBFS you'll be able to capture clean dialog and still have enough of a cushion for erratic DJ levels or for when that overenthusiastic, wasted bridesmaid grabs the mic and shrieks at the top of her lungs (been there).

    Nice vid… This was a cool commercial for Tascam Matt… at 500 bucks… this is not the budget friendly option for an early wedding filmmaker… all you need is 2x Zoom F2 recorders… one for the DJ’s sound desk and one for the bride(maybe another for groom or officiant) Total will be half the price and free lac mics and 3x recordings for backup… all being 32bit… The Tascam is so pretty that you would need tracker tags with motion sensors on it, in case it goes walkies… the F8 is also better if you also do other job types requiring a sound bag.

    Great video Matt. I have used the Zoom H6 in most of my weddings and some of my commercial videos. It has a padded option to record a seperate audio track for each of the inputs at a lower level. It is supposed to give redundant audio recording. I have not tested it and have had one wedding peak so I will test that out to get a feel for it. Have you ever tried it?

  • @FFHavoK

    That's not quite the same as 32 bit float. What the H6 records is a safety track that is simply a lower gain level. I use the Zoom F6 and it actually processes the loud and soft separately and in 32 bit float, which gives a huge flexibility and dynamic range for your audio adjustment both in the quiet and the loud ranges.

  • @landwaterandthewild

    @@FFHavoK yes, I understand mate. I know they are different but just wondering if the 32 bit floating is 100% necessary for me. The way I see it is that padded could make lose the lower levels and normal could lose the higher levels. I imagine the range would be much better with 32 bit floating because I wouldn't have to mix padded with normal to recover the extremes

  • @budrowilson

    @@landwaterandthewild Think of it this way. The safety track is only protecting you if the audio you're recording becomes unexpectedly louder. On the other hand, 32-bit float recording allows you to bring down the loud audio as well as bring up sounds that were much quieter than anticipated without significantly increasing the noise floor (you'll still increase other quiet sounds).
