Thank you for this video. Im having a hard time finding the cable connector removal tool that you are using. Where would one find something like that?

This is a IC chip puller from 1983. I did a quick search, and they have IC chip pullers on Amazon. Search for IC chip puller, or IC chip removal tool.

Hey, dude, thanks a LOT for these. This was invaluable for getting me safely inside. I just had one shipped from Japan which eats cassettes. The take-up reel won't turn on play/rec, but does turn to fwd the tape. The pinch roller engages and works to send the tape forward, though... eventually slack takes over and it eats it. It has a little gear that engages when play is pressed. When it is apart and upside down, I see that happen, and the take-up reel turns (by hand). Once back together with power, it will not happen. Or,... these things go through so many hands, these days. I've changed all the belts. The one to the counter was thin/loose, but the others seemed fine. Those two new-looking belts have me wary. Who knows how small they went, and then I reduce by 5-10%, myself. Seems like there are large disagreements online about sizing them. I am going to try a larger size just to see, after I get some zzzz's. Anyway, just wanted to reach out and let you know that your sharing of info has helped someone tremendously! I happened to think, did you have a cassette in the unit when you are testing the functions? If there is no tape in it, I don’t think the record function will engage. There is a piece that must be pushed in at the back of the housing by a blank tape. If the protection tab is missing, the record function won’t work. If you don’t have a tape in the unit, it’s the same as the missing protection tab. I hope that makes sense.

I've got a Tascam 464 and I used one of those all in one cassette cleaner/ demag tapes 3 times in a row possibly with too much liquid solution in the cassette and now my 464 has warbly track 1 and 4. Track 2 and 3 play back and record fine. But track 1 and 4 have this kind of variable volume/ frequency thing going on. Any idea what I might start by troubleshooting? Thanks if you're still around.

“Warble” is usually a mechanical issue such as tape drag, belt, gears, motor, etc. anything that would cause inconsistent tape movement. It’s odd that it’s only on two tracks.

@@RyansCustomShopandGearOutlet Yeah I know what you mean. Warble is loosely used to describe it. It is like the volume comes and goes...or a frequency range comes and goes. I thought maybe somehow the liquid solution stuff got in around track 1 and 4. Mechanically, if track 2 and 3 playback fine...then mechanically all good, I guess. Anyway, thanks for replying. It might be that it has come good and just the excess liquid cleaning solution somehow mangled tk1 and 4 at the time I did the recording. I'll have to test more. Thanks

Hey, not sure if you can help me out but I recently bought a portastudio 424 mkii and the stereo monitoring is screwed up on it. The right side gets way more volume than the Left, if barely gets any volume. This means that the panning is also skewed. This happens just with live monitoring too not just with playback. Any ideas on how I could solve this problem?

It's hard to diagnose problems without the unit in my hands. I'll take a look at the schematic and trace the signal path to see what it could be. I know these units have internal trim pots for adjusting signals, but I can't remember off the top of my head which trim pots control what signals. You might be able to visually trace it to a trim pot from the headphone jack and monitor outputs. Just make a mark (or take a photo), so if it's not correct, you can put it back to the same setting.

@@RyansCustomShopandGearOutlet Thank you I appreciate it! If it helps this volume issue is also reflected in the little screen on the system. It visually shows on there also that the left side is getting less volume than the right

I was having the same problem with my Portastudio 414 where I hear volume on my right monitor but not the left when I pan to the left I get no volume but to the right I get volume 🤔

I have an interesting question... Are there any digital parts of any kind in this machine? (I'm thinking of digital chips) and if so - do they play any part in the processing of sound before it reaches the tape? Many thanks

There are IC chips on the board, but there are no digital processors or effects onboard. You can view all the chips on the board in the video.
