    I’ve been recording on a DAW for a long time and got a Model 12 to simplify and reel it back to my old days. Creatively shot through the roof. I love that thing. Tbh I built a room in my basement to have a nice place to record because of it.

    Go for it! I'm going to be recommending the 12 to people from now on over the 4-tracks. The prices are insane for the 424s these days. The only con with the 12 is that it doesn't record to cassette. Other than that, as far as I['m concerned, it's a 424 mkiv

    @@424Recording Hey, thx for remembering me, lol. Only now saw this. Maybe the wrong post, but I had a generalized comment, lol. Since cassettes have made a comeback, I wonder why Tascam or someone don't start making 4-tracks again. I have the feeling that will nvr happen. I had the very 1st Teac 144 (sic?) which I flipped millions of burgers and sold 3 kidneys for. I paid $850, USED, in 1981. Gear used to be butt-ass expensive then. Since 4-track cassette is well on it's way to being dead (regretfully), at least it's not like there's a huge paucity of multitracking means. In my...excuse my blasphemy... *ahem*... *hem* *haw*...uhh... DAWs... please don't kick me in the scrote... there are a lot of free and cheap VSTs; "Vintager Toy" is a cool free one. It actually has a dial where you can dial in the year you want to sound like... I choose "1966" a lot. And there's a VST of a consumer reel tape recorder which was sold in Japan during the 60s, called "Reels", by Audio...something lol, which does lo fi/tape REALLY well. And many full-range studio-grade tape sims out there will lend good color to things. And VST tube compressors, such as the free Klanghelm "MJUC jr", which made my throw-together drumkit based around a kid's Stagg drumkit, with "real" cymbals and hi hat, extra "real" floor tom added, sound crazy great. I think I'm pretty damn punk rock for using stuff like that, hahaha. And honestly it doesn't sound bad at all, Stagg know how to make them. Next time yr in a music store that's got a mini "toy" drumkit on display, check it out, mine is a blast, lol. Idk, I'm just expressing all is not necessarily lost bc of the demise of 4TC, although that sucks. That sharp device you're demoing here is a pretty major "band aid" for quelling the no 4-track "ouchie" to a degree! Great song!

The cool thing about a cassette mtr is it’s limitations, which is similar to painting with watercolor….you leave much to chance and that is the essence of the medium. The Model 12 sounds like going straight into a DAW. I really dig your analog productions. I’m old so just my 2 cents. Always love your vids!

    Dude, that Silvertone guitar sounds so much like Beck. I got to a play a friend's Silvertone recently and thought, gee this sounds familiar. It's also the Be Cool Cowboy guitar. Thanks for this vid Mike. I'm still kinda torn between the Model 12 and Model 24. I mean, 24 tracks sounds really awesome for recording a full band with a few overdubs. But the Model 12 is the only one that's a DAW controller, and it would be really rad to have that interactivity where moving knobs and faders for mixing and EQ in post, but then I could save those settings in the DAW. But I guess these work just as well as standalone units, like a digital 424 with may more tracks and no need to bounce. I hardly use the 424 anymore, just for acoustic demos or playing backwards tape or messing with the tape speed. Hope all is well Mike!

  • @antoniocapo996
    @antoniocapo9964 ай бұрын

    I believe if you press the "INST" button right next to the "LOW CUT" the signal gains a significant boost. According to the manual, the instrument button is there to lower the gain on pre-amplified signals. To me it looks like you had it unswitched from the video which is perhaps why the signal on the 5th channel sounded so low.

  • @TaoRen15
    @TaoRen153 жыл бұрын

    Actually there is a way to bus that might work on model 12. You can do it by using your inserts. Normally an Insert sends the signal through a Y cable to an external hardware's input and then from the exterrnal hardware's output the signal returns through the channel's insert. Try to put the connector to the insert on model 12 halfway through, meaning you just want to connect the part of the connector that just sends the signal, not the part that is used for the return. So now the signal will not loop, it will go out from the channel without the need to return to it, you now have to insert the other end of the cable to the channel line input you want to bus it. Try it, and let me know!

    Great song Mike! I have been burning my projects straight to disc (have a tascam cd burner). I have been lazy to learn how "master" a mix with the top right section of this unit, there is another EQ and tone shaping section up there. I do have 2 XLR to RCA jacks that go out the main output into my cd burner, BUT i was lazy and just ran 2 quarter inch to RCA adapters out the headphone jacks straight into my cd burner. anyways, a future video about using the top right section would be great. thanks.

  • @424Recording

    @424Recording

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks, bun! A quick look at that section and it looks like it's the same set of EQ controls on the tracks. I'll have to look deeper into this. If you're happy with your mix, you might not even need to use them! I think that's a good way to do it, out one of the headphone jacks. I'm 90% sure it's the same signal. Saves you from having to unplug an replug haha. Hey whatever works! I will, dude! Got a lot of ideas with this, there will be many more Model 12 videos to come!

    @@424Recording Hi Mike. yeah since last spoke with you, been on vacation and been laying down lots of new material. It flows just like a Tascam 424 MKIII. Hooked up the XLR cables directly into the CD burner and been making magic,.. the maxed out setting you suggested (48/ 24 record speed) has blown my mind!! SOO!! crystal clear is the sound (compared to tape). While I do love the old sound of the way tape sounds,... this new clarity is amazing,.. it's like having fresh ears. For all the old schoolers out there,.. get a Model 12 and you'll be amazed by the clarity.. It really is like a sooped up 424. My gosh!!, I'm in heaven now with all this extra space to layer upon and such clear sound.

    @@424Recording I dont think so, mine needs quite a bit of gain as well ( right now its sitting at just under 3 o clock)and the compression from my model 12 takes away way too much of my low end out of my voice for me to crank it. I usually use the beta58a with an effects processor when recording vocals. right now I am using a zoom g1 four unit which serves as a poor mans modular vocal effects rack. I have various lead/backing presets ( usually some distortion, delay for doubling, compression at the end, etc ) Im sure im just not aware of something simple here, but effects seems to cure it somewhat. I dont seem to have the same problem with a 57.

    @@jamessicilia9125 This is good to hear. I bought mine used, always dug the sound, but it does seem to need a lot of gain, definitely more than the 57/58. It might just be the mic. I never had a problem with it in a live setting, so maybe it just needs a preamp in recording situations. Idk about you but I also sing kind of at a low volume, so maybe that has something to do with it as well. I could imagine the effects would help, as they add another gain stage and potentially raise the volume. I'll have to check that out with the Model 12 comp. I didn't notice that. Maybe it can be compensated with the low EQ?

    @@424Recording I think a clean preamp/ boost, or distortion based on what you are going for, as im sure you probably have some rack pres or something suitable that might fix this if you dont want to use the gain from the tascam. Distortion, or loud vocals really can make the 58a shine, which is probably why we are crankin that gain knob to get the sound we are accustomed to hearing out of it. So in the event that you are singing low volume and cant push air to get the sound out of a 58a/58, that distortion really helps get a more pronounced sound( which is usually attributed by reverb or something similar in a live setting). I used to just use an ibanez ts9 to boost volume and maybe add some distortion/compression, but now I use a tiny bit of distortion, maybe some pre or post delay through this zoom pedal to get the job done, maybe push the track to my daw if anything needs to be taken any farther. Ill have to see test what the EQ can make up for when it come to what the compressor on the unit is taking out, I always try to be conservative with using EQ as I always butcher tracks when I use too much so I honestly haven't approached it like that.

It really helps to thicken up solos without needing to do multiple layers. Highly recommend as it sounds like we're both "less effects is more" kind of people. My guess is that there are a lot of parallels given the similar design but there are things that make them different. Great idea for a video, the file structure. I actually do this a lot for voice overs. All of the tracks that are recorded are available as a separate WAV based on the track number and how the recording is setup (mine's Post EQ) and also as a master 2-channel WAV if you've created one. Thanks, great tutorial. Not really my style but by the end the song got stuck in my head anyways. The only complaint I have is that you show the price in this video and I wanted to share it with my wife because I bought her Model 12 for Christmas and she's learning how to use it now, but I don't want her to see how much it cost ;) Also, it'd be nice to see/hear a synth track being recorded as well (I can't really find any examples of people using this recorder with synths, but I guess that's because it's relatively new still). As for the device itself, I wish Model 12 had more flexible routing and at least one more FX/insert channel, especially since it's all digital so routing should be trivial. My biggest disappointment so far is the lack of option to mix several channels down into one, but maybe it's there and I haven't found it yet. Like when you recorded several layers of vocals it'd be nice to mix them down into one stereo pair of channels, don't you think? I'd definitely love to see more videos about Model 12. Hopefully a bit more detailed, without skipping some settings.

  • @424Recording

    I'll keep that in mind, re: synth video. Yeah, I haven't seen too many videos out there either for the 12 but there are a few for using the 16/24 which would hopefully be similar. You can mix down the tracks to a stereo mix and then put those tracks onto another track by "swapping" tracks; not sure if this can all be done internally or not. I wish there was a way to use different FX vs a single global FX. I'll definitely be making more Model 12 videos this year so stay tuned! Happy recording!

    Wait! You need to show how to bounce all that down to one stereo track! This was a great tutorial. I used a Roland VS 1680 for years (20 years ago), so a lot of this is similar. But the analog knobs for all the tracks is great. I intended to get one of these soon. However, on the Roland, you could click and assign all those tracks to a stereo track and do a big mix down to clear up tracks and keep going. How do you do that here? I would mix it all down and “master’ a final mix. Can you show that ? I bet you have to take your master out (stereo) and patch it in to the far left stereo track? Nice. Old school. Like me. Would love to see it done. This was awesome. Thank you for all that work. Lucky you.
