So many commenters here need to look up the meaning of TAS: Tool Assisted Speedrun. The most common tools used are to slow down time and use save states to 'rewind' time. The video is the final result played at normal speed. This video here though apparently uses an algorithm.

Wow, this is what we can call a modern AI abusing an old video game, lol. Everything is abused. How the plane shakes in the thin passages, how it shoots enemies that aren't in the screen yet, or are at 1 pixel distance, how it hits (I guess) all planes that are possible to hit, how deaths are abused too, to recharge fuel, usually when the bridge is destroyed and the score is about to get a new life... even the 1M score is reached by destroying a bridge at the moment it appears in the screen. Cool! Now to it the other way please. Killing just bridges and enemies which are not possible to skip, so we can know more and more maps. :D

I beat this game in 3h + 6 minutes. I was about to leave it half the way, because I didn't know if it would ever ends. I played it on an emulator, without neither save nor pause. It was even worse: it had a bug, in which, if I go to 1 side and right after to the other, the plain slid more than it should. Plus, my keyboard at the time didn't accept 3 keys at the same time, which is often required by this game. So I had to alter between 1 direction and the shootings.

This is not the end, the video was programmed to be in a endless loop, the programmer did not imagine that Tom will hit the maximum score, so the game just crashed!

No, like several Activision games at the time, it's designed to end at one million points. Laser Blast does the same thing, including turning the score to "!!!!!!". Kaboom stops at 999999 but doesn't change the score to anything special, and Dolphin stops at 300,000 points and the score changes to the word "Amazing!"

I've also heard this is not the only ending possible. As we know, Atari games were distributed by more than one company, not only Activision. If I'm not wrong, River Raid was also distributed by Mattel (as Moon Patrol was), and the ending was not dying at 1 million... ideas for a new TAS

I would like to point out for the ones that are not aware that this guy makes this game look easy. When in reality, this game's difficulty can be compared to Goldeneye N64 on 00 Agent while being armed with just the throwing knives. One of my favorite games and so damn difficult !!

I never could understand the lack of 'logic' in this game. Let me get this straight. I can fly the plane over water, but not grass or ships on the surface of the water? Yeah, that's not how airplanes work. This is the main reason I didn't bother playing this game much when I was a kid.

Funny how the algorithm considers faster to kamikaze itself when its running out of fuel....K wonder the alg considers passing slower on the fuel tanks to recharge more. Also, you should make one without shooting a single ship, or the least possible ones, to verify if maps are infinite. If you dont reach the million it should go on and on.

The algorithm does consider the speed at which to travel over fuel cells, though the plane's accel/deceleration is slow so you can't get too much more fuel without losing time. I did make a version once that would consider it a penalty if any ships were shot, which worked nicely and was funny, though I never assembled it to a full run. The levels are procedurally generated so would theoretically repeat in an infinite loop of several thousand levels, but if you let the game run in emulator with a cheat on so you can't die or score points it crashes out eventually, not sure why or exactly where.

hahaha what a great game an thanks for uploading the memories i remember we would play this for hours an hours when we were kids an get so far an when you fly over the fuel depot slowly you fill up more fuel then shoot it to get the points.. i hated those blue areroplanes that woudl come out of no where an crash into you hahahaha .. the emories the good times. how i miss this .. .. lol what happednd you were going so great hahahaah oh well the game it self was hard to finish i never made it to the end even if i play for over a hour the adapter woudl get oo hot an wed get scared if it gona blow up lol hahahah

I love that you call it 'drum solo' so accurate. The bot I used to generate this avoided shots that didn't hit anything. In retrospect, adding the rapid fire drum solos would have been fun and pretty easy to do

The game is like EXPLODED form the score 😃😃😃 May be the programmer develop the game with infinite playing loop, but the 6 digit score variable cause game crash. Fu**ing hell.

So the end is a 1 million score ? That's a rip-off. Feels more like a system limitation than an end.

That's done to maintain horizontal velocity. You can switch from moving left to moving right (and vice versa) and keep horizontal speed. But if you go straight for even 1 frame you have to accelerate all over again. There are cases where there's a tiny benefit to drop horizontal speed, but I didn't permit this for the bot-generated portion of this movie as it would have greatly increased the number of paths to check without much (if any) benefit.

Se você ler a descrição do vídeo, tem um link pra uma página onde ele explica como o vídeo foi feito. Não é uma pessoa jogando - ele criou uma aplicação que analisa o mapa do jogo e pré-calcula quais os comandos para um caminho ideal matando o máximo possível de inimigos - e um bot joga no emulador usando esses resultados.
