[TAS] GC Ikaruga "2 players, maximum score" by keylie in

This is a tool-assisted speedrun. For more information, see tasvideos.org/2836M

Ikaruga (2001) is a vertical shoot 'em up published and developed by Treasure as a spiritual successor to its earlier title, Radiant Silvergun (1998). It was first released on arcade machines, then eventually ported to Dreamcast, GameCube, XBLA, Android, and even Steam, thanks to the loyal following among the Western shoot 'em up fans. GameCube version was chosen for creation of this TAS as it provided both the most arcade-accurate port, and the most accurately emulated platform of those available at the time.
Ikaruga features a polarity mechanic wherein enemies can be black or white, shooting black or white bullets, respectively. Additionally, player ships themselves can switch between black and white: when white, ship absorbs white bullets and deals extra damage to black enemies, and vice versa. When enough bullets are absorbed, a powerful enemy-seeking attack can be unleashed. As such, typical gameplay consists of frequent polarity switching, chain-killing enemies, and absorbing bullets instead of dodging them; to capitalize on this, the author chooses to control both player ships in order to absorb as many bullets as possible, do more damage, and pick off escaping enemies without breaking a kill chain.
The goal of this TAS is to maximize the score. Ikaruga's scoring system mainly consists of color-based enemy chaining: killing three enemies of the same color in a row increases chain value, messing up the color sequence resets it. Absorbing bullets and lasers, speedkilling bosses, and having spare lives at the end are also significant score boosts-all of these are used in the TAS to the fullest extent. The final score is a massive 50,230,200, only attainable with two players.
--------
Ikaruga has been extensively competed in both Western and Asian gaming communities, leading to release of an official superplay DVD ( web.archive.org/web/201912290... ), as well as blessing us with many other amazing feats of unassisted gameplay. If you've enjoyed this TAS and would like to see what some of the best human players have to offer, make sure to watch VTF-INO's unassisted doubleplay ( • 斑鳩 Ikaruga double play... ), in which the player attempts to achieve maximum score by controlling both ships in realtime; also check out MAZ's KZread channel ( www.youtube.com/@mazstg8844/v... ) for optimal individual level chain and boss fight videos, and riken's full-game playthrough ( • ARCADE NORMAL 36,279,0... ) on Normal difficulty, executing some inhumanly precise chains on the PS4 version of the game.

This was pretty much the most major inspiration for the shmup sections in NieR:Automata, as well as the general syncing musical mood to gameplay that is super prevalent in that game too. I swore I felt like I was watching NieR:Automata on steroids pretty much the entire time lol, and yep, Ikaruga is one of Yoko Taro's bigger inspirations!

They should've done a special ending /True ending for 2-players, like wouldn't it make sense for 2 planes to do alot of damage than 1 that goes all out dying in the process? Since you can essentially control both ships on one controller (Ps4 version as far as I know) it would've been a nice reward

My best is 1 coin clearing the game on normal and A ranking all the levels. I got all the achievements on the 360 port of the game but I just don't have the dedication or time to practice to get the S++ ranking achievements that are on the Steam version of this game. It's a really great shmup though and I played the hell out of this when it was on the Gamecube during my high school years. I haven't touched this game in a long time though so I"d have to practice if I wanted to "get good" again.

I think it WAS one of the last games to come out for the Dreamcast before the console's end of production, though not necessarily the last EVER. Under Defeat, another shoot 'em up game for the Dreamcast, came out in 2006 after being released in arcades the year before, and touted itself as being "the last Dreamcast game" at the time, though apparently two more games for the console came out the year after. You could argue that, with the small groups of Dreamcast homebrew game developers spread throughout the world, as well as fanmade ports of games originally released on the Sega Atomiswave arcade system like Dolphin Blue and Metal Slug 6, it's still technically getting games!

Additionally, the hitbox for absorbing your color is MUCH larger than the hitbox for actually being hit by the other color, thus who the two players were able to graze streams of bullets and have their partner absorb them afterwards from behind Absorbing bullets fills the meter which gives the homing lasers Killing three enemies in a row of the same color gives a Chain Bonus for points And you do significantly higher damage shooting targets with the opposite polarity
