Tarzan and the Green Goddess (1935) [Action] [Adventure]

Фильм және анимация

Different people search for different reason for "The Green Goddess", the Guatemalan idol. A friend of Tarzan, D'Arnot, has crashed in Guatemala and is now held by a jungle tribe. Two other expeditions, one lead by Major Martling and one by Ula Vale whose fiance died in an earlier one, are looking for the valuable idol, too. Raglan, Ula's lawyer, is searching as well, but only to keep it to himself. Tarzan, Ula and Major Martling rescue D'Arnot and find the idol that is worhiped by the natives. More adventures follow through the jungle of losing and recapturing the idol.

Directed by Edward Kull and Wilbur F. McGaugh, produced by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Ashton Dearholt and George W. Stout, written by Edwin Blum, Bennett Cohen, Basil Dickey, Charles F. Royal and Edgar Rice Burroughs, starring Herman Brix, Ula Holt, Ashton Dearholt, Frank Baker and Lewis Sargent.

Absolutely. Couldn't agree more. The movies lead me to the books. It's a shame, though, that the writers and producers of these movies never read the books. Unfortunately the first silent Tarzan picture set the tone for all those that followed. Don't get me wrong. Johnny Weissmuller was still the cream of that crop. Certainly had the best yell.😊❤❤

First Tarzan book I ever read was "The Return of Tarzan," published I think in 1912. It opens in Paris, where he had learned not only French, but the culture. Smoked, drank absinthe, accidentally made out with someone's wife, and fought a duel. And that was just the opening! No movie has ever come close to portraying Jean C. Clayton.

I agree John. No movie of Tarzan has yet been made that truly captures the spirit of Burroughs's books. Looks like with the modern technology of today they could do so. I have for a long time wanted someone to make a movie of him in the Land of Paulul-don. I don't think I spelled that right. lol But it would have men with monkey tails and dinosaurs, things like that can be done like in Avatar and the Jurassic Park series. And they need a Tarzan that has black hair and looks like he could eat you alive in battle if he wanted to.

This was one of the Tarzan films where Edgar Rice Burroughs was used as a consultant. The other was the prior film to this one. Burroughs was not thrilled about how his Apeman was portrayed as a grunting ignoramus like Wiesmuller played in the MGM movies. In the books Tarzan would go head first into battle just like Bruce Bennett did in this one. Bennett lived to be 100 and was in good shape for his age. Although the film is lacking in areas, Tarzan was played by Bennett more like the books. Tarzan was highly intelligent and taught himself to read from his fathers English primers. Bennett was a better representation of ERB’s Apeman then any of the others at that time. Bennett was actually chosen to be Tarzan until he broke His shoulder thus allowing Weissmuller to take the lead. This film was actually released by Burroughs Tarzan Enterprises Inc. This would be the last actor to portray the character as close as ERB intended until Gordon Scott became Tarzan in the 1950’s. Scott’s two films Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure and Tarzan the Magnificent are considered the best adaptations of the characters. During the Bennett films there was also Buster Crabbe, Glen Morris and Johnny Weissmuller who acted as the grunting ignorant Tarzans. Each of these characters appeared thick and strong while Bennett appeared Tall and strong. All of the Tarzans in the 1930’s were olympic athletes. Weissmuller and Crabbe were Olympic Gold Medalists in swimming while Morris won a Gold in the Decathalon. Bennett was a Silver Medalist in the Shot Put. All were very good physical specimens who looked the part. Bennett was the only one who played the part. It has taken many years for the character to be shown the way he was intended. There are 25 books all are good reads. Tarzan is now coming into his own after 107 years. Those ignorant talking films although entertaining took the character in the wrong direction for years. Bennett is trying to portray Tarzan as Burroughs intended. It might been a whole different world if MGM had taken the direction Burroughs revealed in the Apeman novels he created.

There was a 60's tv series about Tarzan and they still featured animals in countries they did not belong to and by then even schoolboys knew which animal belonged to which country.

The original film was a serial in 12 chapters lasting over 4 hours. This version, from 1938 (not 1935, which was the serial), leaves out the first half of the story, where they search for the GG, and starts with the return.

Actually, Bruce Bennett’s Tarzan was more accurate than Weissmuller’s. In that it portrayed Tarzan as a educated and sophisticated person. While doing the same things Weissmullers Tarzan did, wrestling wild cats, alligators, etc.

They weren't too keen on getting this film historically accurate, were they? I mean, right from the get go, there are NO rhinoceros in Guatemala, there are no lions, wildebeest or giraffes, and, crocodiles, alligators and caymans are not the giants depicted as are the crocodiles found in Africa. Put that aside and you have a fun Tarzan jungle adventure. At 03:40 the man says, "Our only task now is to return this relic to civilization," like it hasn't been safe for thousands of years?

This movie more follows the books showing Tarzan as a English gentleman after his rescue from Africa. I wonder if this movie was impounded during WW2 because of the formula for a powerful bomb that can destroy a city similar to what the Manhattan Project was developing.

Glad someone *gets it* 😉😉😉😉 This was the stuff of wonder for kids, like my dad (born '25) before they were thrust into WW ll, scant years later. Also, apart from being pure fantasy, this was filmmaking in its infancy, long before CGI or any sort of special effects, requiring bulky & rudimentary equipment to be lugged to location. No one had seen anything like it. The bar today is exponentially higher....
