I had an eye-opening experiencing of shopping for makeup with my best friend who has a dark complexion. I kept saying, "Omg, try this brand" or "try this" and she'd shake her head, "They don't have a color that's dark enough for me." I felt terrible and couldn't even begin to imagine how my bff felt. Makeup companies know better. There is more than one, or two or ten complexions in the world. They need to do better.

It wasn't for publicity. It was just that their market researchers are idiots and they didn't know how diverse their demographic was before this. They added only two darks shades because they don't care about black people, plain and simple.

I’m so happy to see the amount of people standing together and letting companies know that this won’t be tolerated. I have only been buying products with a full range since finding nymas channel just because she inspired me to do so. I will always stand up for everybody getting a foundation shade for as long as it takes.

I agree and have changed my purchase habits since last year. If the line doesn’t cater to a wide range of complexion I don’t buy it. We shouldn’t just aim to be cruelty free we should be aware of how our purchases perpetuate terrible habits in the beauty industry.

I was so exited to buy it and try it and then I saw the color range. If they had time to make 2 types of foundation they had time to make at least 5 darker shades. I dont feel is right to support a brand that simply decides to ignore people as if they where afterthoughts.

  • @Emilygregoire9

Jossie Lyn Glz. Yess. I’m pretty sure it was a PR stunt just to try to get people talking about the foundation. And they thought that ten more shades, but really only 5 because it will be 5 matte and 5 hydrating shades around the same color, would make us happy? It truly does piss me off because they know how much this foundation has been being anticipated. I would have rather waited another year if that’s what it took for them to perfect all of the shades because now it just doesn’t matter, I will never purchase that foundation.

In journalism/entertainment/pr - there's a saying "there's no such thing as bad publicity or press." Tarte was definitely intentional with their execution. They're very much aware of the climate that we're in so for them to alienate a whole slew of shades - it was on purpose. You mean to tell me not 1 person in the creative process was like "nah.. where are the other shades?" :side eye:

R Ree it’s because their apology wasn’t an apology hun. They said they should have known better when they did. Trust me, tarte has been in the makeup industry for 18 years. They knew what they were doing. And given the success of the shape tape concealer they acknowledge that WOC were consumers of their products. What’s even worse was that their initial response was to say that the darker shades would be released in the warmer months because it’s “tanning season” which neglects WOC even more because they are basing all their products towards fair-skinned woman. Tarte isn’t sorry. They did this on purpose. I hope you learn that

Tarte has honestly never had a good shade range in a lot of their products, so this didn’t surprise me at all. So many companies are still doing it and it’s not okay. Whether it’s 2018 or 2008. It’s not the 50’s or the 60’s, companies are and have been aware that people of ALL tones wear makeup. People get annoyed when we constantly mention Fenty, but she did it right the first time. She made a point to include sooo many tones so at least we get to try it even if we don’t like it. Smaller brands, drugstore brands, indie brands, and high end brands have had at least decent ranges for years and they keep expanding. So why are there so many large and popular brands willfully ignoring people?

My shade was included in the launch, and being very pale Caucasian, I can’t usually get shades pale enough, but that angers me more! If they can try so hard to match every Caucasian in the world, it’s disgusting that they haven’t even tried to match any people of colour. Edited to add: but I agree with you, some people don’t see the issue behind this at all 😕

this release was so disrespectful to deeper skin tones. they spend so much money on those influencer trips and couldn't put extra effort to have a shade for everyone? this whole launch rubbed me the wrong way.

Lottie Person Amen. Have hundreds of thousands of excess money to give to influencers, but can't put that money into having a decent shade range? So shady. I've only bought one thing from them ever, but I'm never buying any of their products again.

I’m so proud of you, Nyma. I’m not a woman of colour, but I cannot believe that a make up company would still fail to be inclusive in 2018. This is awful, and I will no longer be supporting tarte as a brand. EVERYONE should be able to find their shade in a foundation. There is NO excuse. Darker skin tones are not seasonal, I felt embarrassed for them just reading that.

Your passion and emotions in this video really get to me, being someone your shade, I feel you so much and really look up to you. Even though other brands like Mac and Lancôme have been catering for darker skinned people for years, Fenty and Rihs success with the brand should have set an example for any other brands wanting to come out with a foundation range, I think it’s fair to say we’re all sick of being an afterthought 😒

At first I didn't think this was a PR stunt, just horrible ignorance, but hearing what you said on top of seeing them advertise that their launch has been delayed to possible make more hype definitely makes me think you're not wrong about this. Like you said, this topic has been the hottest topic in makeup for a while now and they should have known that, it's REALLY hard to believe they didn't.

You truly carry yourself with so much class and you are someone that is so very respectable. I am so glad you posted this video. You are right in the sense that there are only so many influencers that can speak up against things like this so It's been so reassuring to see everyone come together to speak out on this launch. Even though it is 2018 and things like this shouldn't be happening anymore, the sad reality is that things like this DO continue to happen and its really time for total change. Groups of people shouldn't be seen as an after thought... As people that can be put off. That's disrespectful and absolutely insane. I'm so happy you used your platform to share your thoughts because when there are millions of voices saying the same thing, we can not be ignored. Tarte needs to be held accountable and realize that what they did is completely unnacceptable so that they can put out a real, honest and genuine apology. I can't wait for the day when there is total inclusion, equality, and respect and I pray that it is close. There's a lot of work that needs to be done so I hope this year is the year that as a country, we pull together to stop all this hate and craziness. I love you nyma and what you stand for. Thanks for sharing your thoughts even thought it was probably a hard video to make.

Tarte knew exactly what they were doing. They tried to say they rushed to put it out but no one knew about it until they posted about it. They could’ve waited until the “other” shades were ready. These companies need to be held accountable and stop putting out bullshit apologies. They knew what their intentions were. They’re trying to profit and gain publicity off of people of color!!! It has warmed my heart to see so many influencers speak out about this BS. Tarte knows better and I can only hope that customers like myself will teach them (and other companies who think of doing this) a hard-earned lesson about what behavior is ok and what's not in 2018.

What even made me more mad about this is, the apology wasn’t public, they apologized on their insta story. They also disabled the comments for the picture with the foundations. And now they’re telling people to comment palm trees (🌴) on their pictures so they can avoid comments about the foundation and people can forget about it. This just shows that they don’t care.

Wow, it didn’t even dawn on me that they would use racial insensitivity to actually garner more attention, whether it be good or bad. That’s just sick. I haven’t heard this point of view but it sadly makes so much sense. I always wanted to try their concealer because it’s hard to find a concealer shade light enough for me(I’m on the opposite side of the spectrum), but I will do no such thing now.
