Tarpon Fishing Puerto Rico DIY
The Silhouette crew has gone south to Puerto Rico to catch the mighty tarpon DIY. None of them have ever tarpon fished or been to Puerto Rico. So, it's going to be a huge challenge to get their hands on the Silver King of the lagoon!
Here is a detailed listing of tackle prices, Amazon hyper links for most of the gear used, airlines, and hotel accommodations we used as well as a good place to purchase the tackle in San Juan.
West Marine by far had the most extensive tackle, minnow nets, buckets, bait and gear that we found in San Juan. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about what to use for each fish species. There is how ever a 12% sales tax in PR.
address: 135 Ave Arterial B
San Juan, PR 00918
call: 787-998-1891
- The four of us booked our round trip flights and 6
nights stay for only 613.00$ each. We did book 6
months in advance with United airlines.
- Hotel accommodations were at the Tres Palmas
Resort in San Juan. The hotel is located right
across the street from the ocean. It included a
good continental breakfast and the staff were
very nice and helpful.
Tres Palmas Resort phone number: 787-727-4617
- We each brought our medium heavy salmon rods and
consolidated them all into one hard case that
cost a total of an extra 60.00$ total in luggage.
- Each person brought their own reels that we
carried in our luggage. Two of us used the
Shimano Corvalus 400 Levelwind Reel: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
Fenwick HMX 2 piece heavy action casting rod: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01...
- 20 lb Trilene Clear Big Game Monofilament Line: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
- 30 lb Yo-Zuri flourocarbon for leader 30 yards: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
- 5/0 Owner's circle hooks (5) pack: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
- 5 gallon bucket used for bait bucket - 7.00$ at West
Marine and Walmart in PR.
- 6 ft minnow net - 47.00$ at West Marine
- Super Float Slip Bobbers: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
* A large net is recommended as the terrain is
broken and we did lose one fish right at the
bank.
* We also highly recommend a rental car. It was
approx. 100$ a day and the rental is at the airport.
There are Taxis and Uber drivers. But if you are not
bi-lingual. Some drivers English is poor. Our Uber
app did work as well on the island.
- Grand Total: 757.00$ plus food and transportation
Total based on that you have your own rods and reels
with a hard case to transport.
* There is a tackle shop very close to Tres Palmas that
did have limited tackle, hooks and sinkers. They also
offered very affordable charters for tarpon and other
saltwater fishing.

You are at Cangrejos Yacht Club where I keep my boat and there are a bunch of flat boats to rent.We like to fish tarpon with no higher than 12 pound mono with 30 pounds lead.Since we don't eat them and are just for fun, they keep growing more and more all the time. The most common size is anywhere from 15 pounds to around 40.But when you hook on 12 pounds line between 40 to 60 pounds, you will have the fight of your lifetime. Off-course that cannot be done on shore only on boat.I still enjoyed this video, good job.Puerto Rico and specially that area has become one of the most famous places to fish for tarpon.Just in that yacht club there are anywhere between 10 to 20 charters boats. Thanks for helping us get exposure about it.Last I want to let know that a friend of mine caught a 106 pounds on 6 pounds line witch at the time made the record of biggest one on 6 pounds,I don't know if it stills hold.Sadly enough they had to kill it so they could take to the weight station .Thank you and enjoy.Rafael

We originally went out with a guide from that yacht club, but had no luck what so ever. I think it was just too late in the day by the time the guide got us on the water and fishing. But they are awesome fish! It had been top of my bucket list since I was a kid. I hooked one big one that I knew I'd never land. Really wish we could have gotten him on video when he launched for the 3rd time and spit the hook! You are really lucky to have such a cool fishery right in your back yard. 106 on 6lb is amazing!! Hope to do it again! And I think we will definitely look into renting a boat next time. Really happy you enjoyed the video and thanks for the info my friend!

Hey rafipf!! What kind of money does it take to rent a flats boat. I don’t need anything fancy. Im just a simple man. I suppose I could just find you so you can take me out. I’ll cover gas and lunch! What’s the name of your boat and exactly where is it located? JK!! I’m just messing about but I will check out the marina where you keep your boat. Oh yeh.. is it worth dragging a cast net with me. You have a great day and I hope I’m not digging too deeply to get proprietary info.

I know the way this guy feels I always wanted to catch a tarpon soon as I seen them on a TV show and it took me almost 6 years and I landed my first one in Puerto Rico to seeing this guy catch just type in for the first time is just epic Brong a big smile to my face way to go , but for people that really want to catch them you really don’t need a barber you could use a free line and every time he takes the line pretty much she’s going to jump so when he jumps you have to point the rod tip towards him and that will give you a better chance to land him Nice job brother

Thank you! They are tough to learn how to catch and even more tough to keep on the line. We hooked 5 before we landed one and it was so awesome when we finally did! Congrats to you in not giving up and catching them as well! Bow to the King..

That spot was under the bridge by the Cangrejos yacht club. The sardines were tough to catch except for when the tarpon started feeding. The tarpon would push the sardines close to the bank and then they were really easy to net! I pulled out 150 in one throw one morning. Just don't get the net stuck on the bottom like i did and have to swim out in the lagoon in the dark... Not fun!

Thanks so much!! It was a blast! Just to see that feeding frenzy was really cool! It's different for sure, they jump like crazy! And a really inexpensive trip. Round trip tix and 6 nights stay was only 624.00$ each...

I’m going to PR for 10 days on Thursday and I have more gear that clothes. Seeing as this video is five years old would it be inappropriate to tell me where you were fishing? It looks like a well used spot so I don’t think it would qualify as a “Spot burn”… I’m really just trying to do a little research b4 I go. I hope to get enough info beforehand that I don’t have to spend to much time getting acclimated. Am I right that there are a lot of lagoons and inlets so finding a potentially decent spot won’t be to much of a chore. I don’t know if they are available but I’m hoping to find kayak rentals. I was also thinking about going out on a party/head end boat cuz a six pack charter is out of my budget. I hope I’m not trying to spot burn! Is bait a problem or should I try to take a cast net. It sounds like you guys just went to local B&T. I think February is a good time to target tarpon and maybe a snook. In any event as with any fisherman I just want a couple fish to release. A tarpon of the size you landed would make me a happy man. Well rock on bud and I’ll see you on the water!

A kayak would had been awesome to have. And there were not many places to fish. Find that bridge just south of San Jose. There is a marina in the lagoon right by it, so it should be fairly easy to find. And they best bite by far was the first hour of light and 100% get a throw net! We bought one there. Live bait is by far the way to go. And there are giant tarpon in there. They are spawning in those lagoons. I hooked a big one we didn’t get in the video, but it was for sure 100 pounds.. Hope that helps and let me know how you do?! Good luck!!

@@SilhouetteOutdoors Thanks! A 30pd fish would suit me just fine. It look like you might have been sandwiched between N and S Route one. With a to your right and an access road to get to the water. If not I’ll just find a bridge further down the road. I’ll grab a cast when I got there. You know what’s going to happen, I’m going to lug all this tackle down there and all I really need is hooks, leader, slip floats, and a cast net for sardines. Live bait just about always wins. I might slim it down in the morning. Haha.. I have four rods and reels and twenty pounds of lead jigs and other artificial lures. I found a couple of places that rent yaks so maybe I’ll grab one after I get the lay of the land. Thanks again for the heads up and I won’t burn your spot. Did you give Snook a try while you were there? This is supposed to be a good time of the year for those two species. It looks like I won’t be the only one fishing. It looks like the place is well traveled. See yuh!

@@sentient8146 ya, we threw all kinds of lures at those tarpon and never got a single strike. The live bait was the way to go. We did catch a snook as well on the trip. And on the ocean side of the bridge. We just dead stick fished with un-cooked shrimp and caught some small snappers. Some 5/0 hooks, slip floats and 20 lb mono was the ticket. I had one 15 pounder to the bank, if we had a net, I would have landed 2. There are some huge one’s in there though. That super early bite was key!

Hey Alan, sorry been fishing... I almost always share links to all the gear I use in my videos down in the video description below with amazon links to the exact set ups I use and I try to find the best deals as well. This set-up worked great for me and you may see me using this same rod and reel combo in many of my videos. You definitely want a quality rod and reel for tarpon! I highly recommend a rod no less than 9 feet in length, you'll need the backbone and leverage to fight a big one.

We actually bought one at the marina store in San Juan. But it was small enough that we travel with it now. We just took it to Mexico as well. It really was the only way to catch live bait and that was key to catching the tarpon!

It was really fun just going down to the Super Market and buying un-cooked shrimp and using that for bait and fishing the inlets and bays. You can catch all kinds of crazy fish down there as almost everything will eat shrimp. We caught some snapper and yellow jacks that way. So much fun! Good luck!!
