You should check out a channel called "papa hiker" if you are into tarp camping. He has the most and best videos on pitching various tarp shelters. It's a gem of a channel. Personally I don't like or find it necessary to incorporate a floor into the tarp shelter. I prefer just a separate ground sheet since making one with tyvek or polycro adds no weight to your pack. Mainly because I don't want to put Xtra wear on my tarp by laying on it and also because rain can pool on top of the tarp floor given it goes all the way to the edge like in the video

Dude be smart and take an enclosed tent. This is a good set up and I've added it to my knowledge but I'd never take a tarp if there was a tent available. Spiders aren't going to unzip a tent to let themselves in

Your video shows another benefit of having a square tarp. I agree with you on having doubts about using a tarp as a ground sheet but if needs must you don't have any choice in the matter; I'd rather run the risk of getting a hole in a groundsheet costing less than half the price of my tarp. I bought a roll of black and white poly sheeting ages back for a project and ended up with a nice offcut that is maybe 2.5 by 3, usual use is peg it out white side up, scop a load of leafage on it and let that dry off a bit, and the tent goes up over the top so insulated/mattressed and it packs down to my favourite dimension of approximately fkall. :-)

I was shown this method in the late 70s. It's a very good design . Only thing different is to roll a small diameter stick into the edge( or place it under) the ground sheet part so water doesn't run in as easily if it rains. Other than that, its a brilliant way to use a tarp.

Fantastic! I’ve been looking for a tarp setup with a floor. I don’t understand the concept of camping when it’s not cold. Sweating under a tarp is not my idea of a good time. So for me, a design that minimizes cold wi d blowing under the edge of the tarp into my shelter is the ticket. From the U.S. I say thank you sir.

I use this setup with my pack and dog when not too windy. I put the pack all the way in and it leaves me with a roomy space to be and sleep. My pup is content to be in there too. Mind you, only when there is no possibility to hang, because that's my favourite way of sleeping out. Hammock, with the same tarp over it. And yes, the dog goes into the hammock too.

If you stake the side under the floor on the edge and stake the two together at each point, there won’t be such an opening. Putting it together that way creates a less-penetrable shelter and reduces any chance of rain entering the shelter.

This is similar to a cornet, which is doorless and pegs the centre ridgeline into the ground instead of being offset, id called it a modified or enclosed cornet. Seems like an incredibly useful config for bad weather with only one tree available. I've never used this before but I think im gonna try this in a slightly different order to avoid the pitching guesswork by tieing it to the tree first then putting the ground tieouts in.

Simple and quick. Get those two thing's right and the rest is so much easier. No heavy tent poles. The one super quick Basha trick I remember was the Cleopatra roll up. Just lay it out and roll your self up inside it. If time weather and any other enemy is encroaching fast it will get you covered. Just make sure you don't roll yourself up to tight by keeping your arms out.

I just stumbled onto this video. That actually looks pretty cool 😎 for a fair weather set up. Lots of room, that's for sure. A skeeter net to keep out blood sucking critters would also be cool. For wet weather, I suggest that you lower and pull out/stake the exposed bottom side along with a rain run off ditch and at the entrance. As for a name ? Well, let's give it a try. Ahem...A closed plow blade, a closed diamond half, a closed pyramid half, a closed carpenter's square, an easy peezy, That Frkn Cool Tarp Thing, The long quicky in the woods tent OR..The Wedge 😃 . I don't know, I gave it a shot. It IS a Rock-and-Roll Cool 🎸😎 setup. I like it a lot. Thanx. GOD Bless the U.S.A. AIRBORNE !

Brilliant idea! I’m putting my Bug Out Bag together and will be using a 10’ x 10’ tarp and was REALLY. Glad to see the floor, because I live in South Florida where we have beautiful weather and scenes but ALL KINDS of preditators: snakes, cats, alligators, crocodiles, just to name a few and you don’t want to sleep on the bare ground, do this setup will work great! Thanks so much for your video….just a note for future: I could barely hear your instructions unless you were up close to the front, All the best!

This may well be exactly what I've been looking for Allan. Will give it a go and see if it works with my DD UL 3 X 2.9 tarp. Will definitely use a footprint. The DD Magic Carpet folded in half may be big enough. Will probably have to use a tree, my trekking poles only extend to 135cm.

Its quite easy when you do it. Just have to remember to have the 1st 2 pegs offset from the tree about a foot or two. Can also be done with a walking pole and a guy line in the open. Regards Allan.

I was coming up with enclosed+floor tarp designs from making models from a square piece of paper, the best one I could think of was as a matter of fact exactly what you have done here! I haven't tried to do it with a tarp yet. It was good to know the slumped bit is where the centre loop is since my tarp only has a centre loop (in addition to the side loops). I was going to name the design after myself, but since you beat me to it perhaps it should be called the jim-bob tarp

Could always run an extra line off to a tree from where you were pulling in the middle of that vertical line over head. Pull that whole thing out just a bit more instead of redoing the entire structure...? I'm sure you know that, I just figured I'd throw it out there. Nice little set up though. I haven't used this one in a while. Thanks for sharing.

if you make a floor with the tarp, the tarp should be bigger and bulkier. It means it is better to carry a tent instead of big and bulky tarp. Just make a top cover with smaller tarp and make a floor with your poncho. One tarp and a poncho combination is fantastic.

Tarp is the DD Hammock: DD Tarp MC It comes in 3x3, 3.5x3.5, 4x4, and 5x5 (meters), which is about 10, 11.5, 13, and 15 in feet. I think the one I’m the video is the 3x3 meter / 10x10 foot tarp.
