We always remember Suzuki-San facing peak Federer at the AO his first trip there amazing courage! was a crowd favorite in our Club we all watched it. The problem for the future of Japanese players is there is no clay like in Europe. We tried very hard to get the same priced same company Omni Classic Clay instead of Omni Carpet but no council would budge when redoing courts in 3 clubs we tried (too many soft tennis players like carpet+sand). It is a shame as Japanese players are all about quick points no tolerance and no endurance for longer battles which is do or die tennis not suitable for their body types (japanese have better bodies for long distance). America, Japan and Australia all have the same problem atm and yet the top 3 now Nole, Meds and Zverev (even Tsitispas no4 better than Meds on clay) all super defenders that will stay all day on court to win. Previous era tennis like Suzuki Takao is beautiful I miss it but today all surfaces, racquets, balls and atp homogenous conditioning of tennis has led to baseline only tennis. Even Nishioka coming back from knee injury was convinced to play hard court events instead of the South American swing which Tiafoe endured and improved immensely doing so. It is a shame Japan Tennis does not look at Spain at least on how to help Japanese players starting with getting rid of sand and use Classic Clay with same durability and same costs and cheaper than hard courts. Not only will it help develop better players thanks to longer rallies but also be softer on the bodies of Japanese players as hard courts produce more injuries. Hardcourts do not make great consistent players in todays game and never will.

This is very interesting but to me it seems that hard courts are the most universal. Most tournaments are on hard. If you are only good on grass or clay, you are doomed. If you are only good on hard, you can be a top player (Medvedev).

Indoor carpet is a whole different game. I started playing tennis on clay in summer then when winter came everyone played indoors. In the late 1970’s indoor carpet was common. I learned to serve and volley on carpet and it became my preferred style of play. I miss that old form of tennis.

Amazing match! Takao really played at very high level. I love the unusual “step in” serve. Lots of forward momentum. The approach volley is deep and the net volley is deadly inside the service line or away from the opponent. It won’t be easy for any pros to break Takao’s service game on this super fast carpet surface. I noticed the taller player’s top spin server usually are not effective since their serves are more like a combination of flat serve and top spin serve. I think the taller player should use slice serve more often if they are not comfortable with their top spin serve as the second serve. The exception could be the serving toward corner/sideline at the Ad side while the server could step further away from the T to have more margin for error. Great game! Amazing skills from both player. The taller player could generate tons of topspin on both his forehand and backhand. I could see he is a top pro on the Clay court. Very nice game!

That was a beautiful display of tennis!

It was 2018 I think before Novak had elbow surgery

When I was 44, I still felt pretty good, not too much different from when I was 20's or 30's. But now at 57, huge difference. Compared to the guys at my level but younger, In their 40's, I feel like I am playing in slow motion if playing single. I can still handle the double but even that, I can't last as long. Anybody who says age is just a number is a liar. Yes, a 57 year old former pro will easily dispatch a 30 year old 5.0 player but he'd be like an amateur compared to his younger peers.

Well played Takao!!. But felt the pressure at some part though against top 100 Taro. Yeah that´s what tennis is about too!!!!

I am quite sure It was the first time on that court for Taro, It is pretty hard to deal with the ball bouncing so low playing against someone trained to play on such fast court. If it'd been on hard court I think Taro would win. It was fun watching the game and hearing Taro in spanish when things were difficult. All the crédit to the máster, congrats on such high level. The surface may have play apart as well as the atp tour is quite slow pace.

mesmerizing watch !! Master Takao's serve fluidity and beauty is right up there with Grand-master Roger !! :-) It resonates so much with me, I'll use it as a model for my own serve in 2022

He won because : 1. He plays an all around game, his game is the way tennis was played 20 years ago and before, he knows how to s/v, 2. He has a natural 1HBH, 3. He knows how to play the net and 4. He has a great serve. The other player was less natural especially the BH and the serve.

There both really really good. Fun match to watch.

He was born in the USA and grew up in Japan and Spain. He is trilingual

Judging by the string savers, the string is probably natural gut - it's what he would have used back when he played on the tour.

Suzuki still schooling all these younger players lmao. I still think Takao could be competitive on the ATP tour, especially on the faster, lower bouncing surfaces. Lopez won Queens at the age of 37. Suzuki has a similar game. Honestly, most of the younger next gen players cannot handle a fast-paced serve-and-volley style, which is why they all lose early in Wimbledon!

Taro has pretty ordinary serve technique for a top 100. Awkward stance, not a proper platform stance and very little coiling (rotation) of upper body.

All these unforced errors... So basically whoever keeps the ball inside wins.

It's because they are on carpet and it picks up way too much spin or skids through. There's a reason it's not used on the pro-tour.

@@NamesAreRandom I think some lower level professional tournaments still use it and to be fair, it was used on the ATP tour for a very long time, but you're right, it results in very low average rally length at the highest level which is probably why it was dropped.
