Targeting Summer Redfish - OBX / Pamlico Sound Kayak Fishing

Hitting Pamlico Sound in July can be difficult. The wind can be blowing hard and the water can exceed 90 degrees. But, you can still manage a good day fishing for redfish. This was one of those days.

Thanks for checking out this video. There's nothing like going to a new area, targeting a new(ish) species, and coming home with dinner. Let me know in the comments what new species you are targeting this season! Tight Lines!

I’m heading to the sound to fish off from the kayaks with some buddies Mother’s Day weekend, do you have any advise on where to launch and general area to head too? We plan on putting out at Oregon inlet and we plan on throwing popping corks and some lures to target the drum and the specks

I have launched multiple times at the Oregon Inlet fishing center at the boat ramps. From there you can reach many good spots to target reds and specks (and sheepshead). If you want to send me an email at rich@fatdadfishing.com I will send you a few good spots that I've fished.

Coming up in the next few weeks I will be sharing OBX specked trout videos. Would be happy to show you exact locations I found that should produce gators in late August.

I'm central nc. Where would you recommend putting in in the sound? I want to get into saltwater. Went out on my buddies boat from oriental and caught quite a bit. But I'm wanting kayak tips

I wish I could help you with the western side of the sound, but all of my experience has been from Oregon Inlet and south. If you want some drop-in spots and information about that area of the sound I'm happy to let you know what I've got. Just shoot me an email to rich@fatdadfishing.com and remind me about this comment.

This was awesome man! We're heading back down to OBX end of August and I wanted to kayak fish the sound side. Also, congrats on 1k subs, well deserved

That's awesome...and thank you for the congrats on the subs. By the end of August you should be right in the middle of the arrival of gator trout. I actually have a couple of speckled trout videos I made while down there that I'll be putting out soon. If you are going to be fishing the sound anywhere from Oregon Inlet down to Buxton let me know. I can show you exactly where I found some nice structure.

@@FatDadFishing thanks, will do! We'll be in Hatteras Village, which is just south of Buxton

In that case I have a decent spot that I think will produce those gator trout for you (conditions permitting). Short drive north for you...and if you are wade fishing, it'll be a fun spot for you.

I fish the surf in the OBX multiple times a year but have never fished the sound. We typically stay around the Nags Head/kitty hawk area and I’ll be taking a kayak this year. Where do you put in at around there and suggest throwing a line in?

I typically fish south of Nags head. Oregon inlet fishing center has a ramp. Further south after the bridge over the inlet (about 1 or 2 miles) is a lot on the right that allows an easy launch. I also fish the Day area south of Avon. All great launches with great fishing close by.

I’m heading down in the morning to fish for 4 days. Thanks for the tips. Where exactly did you launch? I’m gonna try pea island launch, and see what I can do.
