I think he was 16. And then around 2008 when he was about 49 he wrote Sugar and Spice, about his breakup with the same woman all those years later....

Just didn't realise how much Mike Barson is doing in all of the Madness songs, he really is the backbone to most of their success. What an incredible pianist, and might I add, very good bit of footage watching him explain the complexity of the song, especially the middle solo part, its bordering on classical piano. A genius, and such a humble one too. 👍😎 🎹

Who else could hear the sax building up uncontrollably in their head....

I was going to comment that I thought Madness was just a bunch of young lads making it up as they went along. At least this proves one of them was properly trained.

Bloody brilliant to see Mike doing his stuff. Just after this video came out I commented here about the mistakes on the graphics & I made a tutorial video showing the correct notes Mike plays on this video. The only reason i started playing keyboards is Mike Barson and i'm sure many many others to. great songwriter and not a bad singer either.

Mike Barson = genius. This song = genius. Whoever put the key diagram graphics at the bottom full of totally wrong chords = not. Play what Mike plays, not what the pictures show :)

You could do a full album of the hits just like that Mike

Music is so bad now, Madness would blow them all away today if they started as a young band in this era as their music is timeless and still relevant.. They had 17 top 10 singles as they put out hit after hit after hit.. They truly were like a conveyor belt for hits and they had the most amazing melodies which is the most important thing to have in a song.. And Mike Barson shows us all that with a little bit of hard work and the right attitude a band can go a long way.. The man is a truly gifted piano player and it was his drive and song writing ability which saw the band get so much success.

I wonder what classical music composer inspired him for that Pont.

I don't need any crappy INACCURATE coloured key guides like the shit shown at the bottom here, I mean, I can't even fkng read music or tell you what note is what letter. That is how musically illiterate I am, BUT...... I simply learnt to play this by ear some years ago!! Like I do with so many other piano riffs. And it looks like I got the chords right too! (Vindicated!)

You see... Even to be a band of yobboes like Madness, you still need musical geniuses.

I don't ever want to learn it. I just want to hear him play it. I'm, 13 again.
