Right. People who think Michelle was robbed are clueless. I wanted Michelle to win, but can easily admit she was crushed technically by Tara, who was also talented artistically for her young age and deserved to win.

To all the people complaining because of her screaming when she realized she won, come on! She was a 15 year old girl who worked for over a decade to reach her dream. If I worked that hard at something for so long and finally achieved it, I would hang from the rafters with excitement. A lot of ppl are still mad cause Michelle didn't get the gold. Michelle is a great skater and had a great program but if you land something in olympic competition for the first time making history like Tara did with her triple loop triple loop combo you better get high marks! The judges were fair in their decision. I wish we had skaters like these now.

@@TT-ee4qp They are all just kids, the average age of Olympic female figure skaters is only 20 years old! There has been 11 Olympic female figure skater medalists under the age of 17, Tara Lipinski is not even the youngest to medal (youngest American female to medal). As a matter of fact youngest figure skater to medal was American Scott Allen at age 14. Tara Lipinsk's performance was flawless and well executed, and the difficulty level of her routine was by far harder than any other in the competition. She earned that gold with a wonderful performance with grace, elegance, and poise at just under the age of 16! Tara did such a difficult performance, I have to give credit to the judges for giving her such high scores, even if the USA judge still ranked her second overall behind Michelle. Tara made history there as she became the youngest Olympic Champion in the history of the Winter Olympic Games, and I was witness to it myself when I watched the Games when I was only 12. Since Nagano, I don't think any female Winter Olympian has, or will, be able to overwrite the history Tara made right there when she came home to the USA a gold medalist Olympic Champion. What a lot of people don't know is, Tara use to be a figure roller skater! Those figure roller skates are super heavy!!! When she transitioned to ice skating, the ice skates were ultra light to her. This made jumping very easy for her plus she lost 8 pounds of figure roller skates. I know because I transitioned as well from roller to ice. The triples came easy. Anyways.... Great performance, style, and technical performance. Sort of for the same reason, Nathan Chen, the favorite for gold in 2018, lost the Olympics. It was his Chinese "tiger mother" who was so controlling and overly involved in his career. It was she and a couple of other family members who insisted that Nathan do two different jumps in his Olympic SP other than what he'd practiced. His coach advised against it, but the family influence was too strong, and the rest is history; he had a disaster in the SP, ended up wining the LP, but just missed the podium. Right before the 2022 Olympics, his mother and family started to interfere again. His coach, Raf, said they were insisting Nathan add a sixth quad to his LP, but Raf put his foot down that time, saying Nathan didn't need it to win...and he didn't, finally winning the gold. His mother reminded me of Tiffany Chin's "tiger mother" back in the 80's who ruined her daughter's career, and she didn't get a second chance.

I have to fault CBS for cutting to Danny Kwan at the end of Tara's performance. Especially when Tara was about to upset his daughter here. it's was Lipinksi's parents or family that they should have cut to. They did the same thing in 2002, or was it NBC, to show Karen Kwan and Michelle's brother when Michelle lost to Sarah, instead of cutting to Sarah's family. Certainly better protocols in these situations need to be adhered to.

Kwan likely didn't allow anyone to film her during, and after, Tara skated. CBS wanted to show the other potential winner right before the gold medalist was announced. All they had was Danny Kwan and Frank Carroll. CBS showed Todd Eldredge, Tara's training partner, right after Tara skated. In 2002, Kwan was behind the closed doors of the women's locker room. Kwan didn't allow cameras to film her. Hughes was in the men's locker room, and allowed a cameraman to film her reaction. NBC showed Kwan's siblings after they found out that she had lost... they should have left that scene out. Maybe they didn't show Hughes' family because they didn't know where they were.

Michelle was more mature but skated very slowly almost a bit cautiously compared to the identical program at the nationals. Tara was a spitfire and yes her jumps are a bit unconventional at times, particularly the double axel and her lutz but her triple triple loop was amazing. Technically she was superior and overall a much tougher program with great speed and more passion on her performance. Michelle never mastered a triple triple and it would have won her gold had she done one. As for her post program behavior Tara was a little girl who just won the gold medal and upset Michelle Kwan. Yes it was over exuberant but Michelle also was a bit over-wrought with the tears and sobbing too.

All the news about Tara Lipinski's wedding brings me back to this video yet again, and I'm still in awe. What a performance under such pressure. The difficulty of this program was so far ahead of its time. A most deserving gold medal performance.

Tara Lipinski had no pressure because no one supports Tara would be the winner. (∩▽∩)Michelle's artistry and technique were better than Tara, without a kid's body and weight that Tara had no technique. (∩▽∩)

Say what you want, as much as I admire and respect Michelle, Tara deserved to win that night! Michelle skated with caution and her FS was slow. And Tara skated with such freedom with nothing to lose. And that made the difference. Much like Sarah 4 years later in SLC.

I feel like Tara went out and skated to win, like the gold was hers if she would just take it. I kind of felt like Michelle felt if she just skated well she would automatically win the gold. Michelle skated cautiously and Tara went out with reckless abandon and took it.

yes indeed a well deserved gold medal. tara skates to win while michelle skates not to lose. tara did 3 combination jumps and 2 of them were triple/triple, while michelle only did 1 triple/double combination jump.

This performance means so much to me..this was the first time in my entire life I watched an Olympic gold medal skate that had no errors. All the other gold medal skates I had seen up to that point (Katarina Witt, Yamaguchi, Oksana Baiul) had major mistakes and/or were too slow and conserative. To me this skate is one of the very best in history!

Kristi Yamaguchi is by far the most elegant and beautiful skater. She had star quality in spades. Michelle Kwan had no spark or star quality whatsoever, no matter how technically perfect she skated. Tara Lipinski by contrast was simply a delight and absolutely deserved her medal.
