Tapping Below the Lateral Line for High Maple Sap Yield
Maple producers sometimes have a difficult time locating areas on the tree that will produce unstained wood and good sap yields. This video suggests approaches maple producers using vacuum can take to counter this problem.

Great video. Because of your research, we started tapping below our laterals 3 years ago and it has made a world of difference. Better tap holes, and better yields because of it. Thank you for the work you are doing to further the maple industry.
you can use a VAWT wind turbine attached to compressor and extract a lower quantity of sap, just decoupling the pump system with a sap level arduino alarm to your phone, so you can extract from lots of trees with no cost and little damage to the trees
Tapping into new wood is a good plan but even with vacuum I would never tap below the lateral. It just sounds like trouble to me, you want the sap to go downhill even when your vacuum pump loses power or breaks down
very informative

Glad it was helpful!
What software are you using for your video editing/titling? - the production quality here is excellent.

The "Keys to High Sap Yield" series were done by the UVM Across the Fence Media Team. I agree...they do EXCELLENT work.
I have ,in the past, put in a dowel plug. Is this a good thing ,bad, or totally unnecessary?
Watching from australia! I was wondering if a maple tree can survive here? Cause your videos are very informative and inspire me to add a maple tree to my garden. Cheers

It would depend on the site, but not likely to be optimal conditions. You'd be unable to make maple syrup without good freeze/thaw conditions.
Does this technique work with 5/16 drops as well or only 3/16 to 3/16?

Tapping below the lateral will work with either 5/16" or 3/16" tubing on vacuum (natural, pumped, or hybrid)
What is the definition of good vacuum?

The relationship between sap yield and vacuum is linear. The more vacuum you pull the more sap you get. Turns out to be about a 5-7% increase in sap yield for each 1" Hg vacuum you pull, so the higher the better. It depends upon what your pump is capable of, but typically we consider high vacuum to be better than 25" Hg.

Hello Chris. This series of brief videos in this playlist is aimed at teaching maple producers high yield sap collection techniques, and thus assumes the viewer has some basic familiarity with maple equipment and techniques. It is impossible to introduce all of the equipment, techniques and terminology and to still keep the videos brief and focused on just a couple of points. If you wish to learn more about maple sap collection tubing systems, I would direct your attention to this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/lWqg0q-go8msXcY.html Thank you for your interest.
