Tanto Vs Drop Point! Which do you choose? Demko FreeReign Fixed Blade Review.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Demko FreeReign gives us a choice of Tanto Vs. Droppoint. The the thought is the droppoint lends itself to more normal knife stuff like food prep because that pattern lends itself to a nice long edge with a belly. The American Tanto pattern gives us the thicker tip if you spend more time breaching or prying. Whatever you choose we are all part of the omnipotent stump which commands it's collective roots and beings to always be bushcrafting. Basically this is a video review and demonstration of the AUS10A version of the Demko Freereign, which was designed by former Cold Steel guy and custom knife maker Andrew Demko.

I’m a half Japanese man, that was raised by a Japanese woman. You pronounced the cutting edge and the forward edge perfectly- if you really want to sound like a pro, you can also pronounce “tanto,” as “tahn-tō.” You also described why the “tanto” is an elusive term and kind of subjective (it’s a term that formed and without rules or reason). We could argue over the shape, the history, etc for ages … at least you didn’t call a wharnecliffe (cough bemnchmade) a reverse tanto lol. Again, kidding, they can call it what they like but reversed would be backwards, not upside down, so that one makes less sense to me, but I get it. Sorry to rant about trivial items here. I love your reviews, and have for years. Your sarcasm and dry humor are better than coffee.

I need to make sure I fuck up the pronunciation on some things, otherwise I'll be held to too high a standard. When I say it like dumb in Spanish, all I think is dumb in Spanish. However yes, there is a lot of confusing, and contradictory diagrams and definitions on Japanese swords. One thing is for certain what we now refer to as a tanto didn't seem to have much connection to the actual tanto. It's like calling an apple fruit an apple leaf.

It is reversed. The angle from spine to tip is how it's classified as it's angled the opposite way to a Tanto. The tip isn't "backwards", because that's impossible.

The worst thing is that the designation tanto is wrong, because it means a short sword, and these were worn by samurai behind their waists and did not have such an edge on the blade at all. They had a smoothly rounded blade at the end.

I've been a Tanto Bro since the first minute i saw one. As a mechanic who was frequently in the junkyard and was interested in carrying as few tools into the desert wasteland as possible, it just made sense. I've almost always had a CRKT M16-10KS. Ive probably bought 15 of them over the last 15+ years. I never broke one, but I've lost a bunch and donated them to the freeway.

I've used a Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto for yrs. now for carpentry & other work tasks. Just upgraded to the S35VN version. I've found the chisel-like tip more useful for a range of tasks a drop point simply couldn't handle. I prefer Cold Steels tanto over the Benchmade, as they got the angle just right for my work. That said, I love a drop point. But for hard use at work, Cold Steels Tanto is for me! Outstanding humor & commentary! Keep it up!

also The Flknniven S1 is laminated stainless. It comes with a very steep convex that pissed me off a bit so I shallowed it out a bit. But I own both a SRK and an S1, they are super similar but I think the S1's steel is a winner. If you want a knife for cheap where you don't have to worry about price or beating it up too much (even thought the S1 is probably tougher) I think SRK is the choice. I love them both. Great knives. Falkniven needs to rethink their prices perhaps tho.

I have the Kabar Corsair spaceforce folder, which is tanto style because aliens probably have a bony exoskeleton you'd need to penetrate if you had to do whatever space cadets would do if aliens were engaged & needed to be dispatched.

Tanto style tips Don't penetrate as easily as a drop point will though. Tip strength is mainly what you gain from tanto, not increased penetration (stabby-stab ability). They're better at prying, and they won't break as easily as a pointed tip will. Also, you gain a sort of chisel to push with and the secondary V point has its uses. But, you loose the belly curve and thin pointed tip in-line with the handle, which are two of the most important attributes of a lot of tasks.

The Fallkniven and older Cold Steel fixed blades look similar because they're both made by Hattori in Japan.

Going to have to re edit this. Hattori has produced knives for cold steel and makes Fallkniven , this is true. But that’s a partial truth according to what I know. This thread confirms the original cold steel SRKs were made in US from Carbon V- which really has nothing to do with either company contracting with Hattori later down the road. There’s some very early SRKs with pictures in that thread, one from 1990 stamped Made in USA. Again unless you have an alternate history somewhere, this is the best info I have about the SRK. Does that mean Hattori was inspired by Cold Steel? I dunno. www.bladeforums.com/threads/mini-history-of-cold-steel-srk-and-recon-tanto.1567867/

Also a thread on the trailmaster: www.bladeforums.com/threads/history-of-cold-steel-trail-masters-and-recon-scout.1567738/ Which was made in USA before the Hattori versions later.

Camillus made the Carbon V models, before they went under. I have a Trailmaster and Kukri from the 90’s, Made in USA.

I am a tanto-head! Find the edge at the tip, whatever it is called, to be very convenient. Then again I am a "sharpened tool" kind a guy. :) Something something right tool for the job. Offcourse, every tool has its place and rarely a drop point or a serrated edge is the way to go. They look nice but how is the grip? Rubbery or plasticy? Slippery when wet?

I see you broke 90k subscribers, congrats! But life is not fair. What else can explain Wranglerstar's success. That SOB. All your current subscribers should just refer you to one friend (if they have any). I'm not good at math but that might get you over 100k. Press on with pride and never forget the 6 p's. Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. From what I see you already know this. Cheers, Dave (born/raised in Missouri but left a long time ago) P.S., how about a cheap-ass beer review for old times sake?

Drop point, I might like a sharp tanto like on the nimravus. But dont see a point of tanto blade, it disrupts cutting when following the blade.

I'm sure tantos are great for opening boxes, Amazon packages and other mall ninja tactical stuff, but it's virtually useless in an outdoors application like hunting or fishing. I'll stick with the drop, or clip point knives, thanks.
