Tres beau.

Wow. The act had less than two minutes to go, before the beautifully satisfying conclusion of Tannhauser's exclamation, "To Rome!" and exit.

I was at this matinee performance! What a cast! Botha managed to make Tannhauser sound easy. Westbroek was a radiant Elisabeth, although her high notes were shaky. DeYoung was a sultry Venus, she too with some wobbly high notes. Groissbeck, a sonorous king. And then there’s Mattei, the baritone with gold in his throat. Note: the harp that you hear during the song contest is played by Emannnuel Ceysson Here is this same cast, sans Botha, discussing the production kzread.info/dash/bejne/i3qkzaaffNvXhdI.html

It’s worthwhile if you have a great tenor. The performance from Bayreuth, with Gwyneth Jones as both Venus and Elisabeth, is my absolute favorite. It has Walther’s aria.

If only opera still had these sort of traditional productions......... it's all gone long before 2024, but I'm sure that we will return to opera as it was intended by the composrers, even if it takes more than a few years. What we get today, in most cases, is a pitiful representation of what grand opera should be! Just look at the splendour of this Schenck/Schneider Siemssen production!
